I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. learn about the definition and verb form of the present perfect continuous tense;
2. summarize the general rules of present perfect continuous tense;
3. apply the rules in new situations appropriately.
II. Key competence focus
Develop the thinking ability by analyzing and summarizing the general rules of present perfect continuous tense.
III. Predicted area of difficulty
1. Use present perfect continuous tense freely and properly in their writing and speaking.
2. Explore the rules of present perfect continuous tense.
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Warming up
T asks Ss to read part A on page 34 and answer the following questions.
(1) How did the girl feel at the beginning when she was equipped with an artificial hand
Suggested answer: She felt it did not feel like part of her.
(2) What has the girl been doing since she got her new hand
Suggested answer: She has been cooking for her family again.
(3) What does the girl feel about the robotic hand in the end
Suggested answer: She is so grateful for all the new possibilities her robotic hand has opened up.
【设计意图: 老师首先通过分享一位佩戴机械手的残疾女孩的自述,设置回答问题的练习,让学生在具体的情境中提前感知本节课的语法知识,很自然地引入本堂课的语法内容,同时引入了话题,也为本堂课的终极任务做好了铺垫。】
Step 2 Exploring and working out the rules
T asks Ss to finish the table in part A.
Scientists have been making great progress in robotic technology in recent years, ...
Over the past three months I have been testing out the limits of what I can do with my new hand, ...
..., I have been cooking for my family again since I got my new hand.
T asks Ss to finish “Working out the rules” of part A on page 34.
We use the present perfect continuous tense to talk about an action that started in the past and is
still continuing now, or an action that has just finished but is still connected with (1) __________ (the past/the present/the future) in some way.
The verb form of the present perfect continuous tense is “(2) ______________”.
3. T asks Ss to go through “Grammar notes” on page 99. Give explanations if necessary.

Step 3 Applying the rules
T asks Ss to finish part B1.
B1 Complete the sentences with the correct forms of the verbs in the brackets.

T asks the Ss to finish part B2.
B2 Below is an article about robotic limbs. Circle the correct expressions to complete it.

After finishing B2, T asks Ss to answer the following questions:
(1) What were some of the earliest artificial limbs like
Suggested answer: They were made of wood and leather, and served only basic functions.
(2) With the advancement in robotic technology, what can artificial limbs do
Suggested answer: Artificial limbs can now perform much more complex tasks and come closer to real human life.
(3) Why did David Jones say they would not take out a patent on the technology of robotic limbs
Suggested answer: Because they hoped more and more people in need of robotic limbs would be equipped with the limbs and enjoy a higher quality of life.

Step 4 Role-play interviewing
T asks the Ss to make interview according the article about robotic limbs.
B3 A student is interviewing David Jones about the research his team has been doing. In pairs, role-play the interview using the present perfect continuous tense. The beginning has been given.
Student: What have you been doing, Dr Jones
David Jones: We have been developing ...
