3. B3P33 Discourse markers
T: Please read “Learn this” and tell us how you understand it.
Discourse markers are words or phrases which help express ideas logically. They show how different ideas are connected: on the whole and in general are used to generalize ideas, moreover and furthermore to add more information, and for example and for instance to give examples.
T: A discourse marker is a particle (such as oh, like, and you know) that is used to direct or redirect the flow of conversation.
T: For example: Well, Rick is the kind of man that… well, if I were a woman, I should be in love with Rick.
T: Another example: Oh yeah I wasn’t born yesterday, you know.
T: The magazine article uses some discourse markers to express ideas logically. Find them in the article and revise the following sentences using discourse markers.
Answer: (Sentences using discourse markers from the text)
1. Indeed, it could be argued ...
2. However, earning a living is ...
3. Yang Liwei, for example, driven by his passion for flying ...
4. ... and, consequently, can give us a sense of achievement ...
5. ... our skills, thus providing room...
6. However, it is certain...
7. Moreover, there are people...
8. For example, teachers in remote rural areas...
T: How do you like the following text
You show great interest in designing furniture. You do not meet the requirements for the post. We are unable to offer you a job.
T: Right. The text seems loose in language. To make it coherent, some discourse markers must be added in like this:
On the whole, you show great interest in designing furniture. Your CV has some very interesting furniture design styles. However, you do not meet the requirements for the post. We prefer someone with much more experience in this field. Therefore, we are unable to offer you a job at this time.

4. What’s more, some people choose to give up comfort and are devoted to the cause for others.
