Some time ago, I gave a talk on astronomy to a group of third graders. I explained how lots of stars end their lives by exploding (爆炸) in what are called supernovae (超新星). I also talked about the Big Bang, the massive explosion that marked the beginning of the universe. The class atmosphere was lively, the kids relished the talk and they asked many interesting and wild questions.
After the talk, while I was getting ready to leave, a little girl approached me with a worried expression. “What’s wrong ” I asked. She looked up, “Am I going to blow up, too ” I guaranteed that she wouldn’t, but her concern made me reflect.
We often connect nature with peace and harmony. However, the universe also has a more violent side, which can be seen from volcanoes, exploding stars, and the Big Bang itself. It seems the universe loves to blow things up. But why
The answer lies in the concept of balance. In physics, balance means a state of equilibrium (均衡) between forces. For example, as you sit reading this, gravity (重力) is pulling you down, while your chair provides an upward force that keeps you stable. However, this balance is not lasting forever.
The universe develops in imbalance, which is vital to its functioning. Take supernovae for instance. In a Type Ia supernova, two stars orbit each other - one is a white dwarf, and the other is younger. Material from the younger star falls onto the white dwarf, and under the right conditions, nuclear reactions occur. If too much material is added, these reactions become uncontrollable, leading to the star’s explosion - a supernova. Similarly, volcanoes erupt due to the buildup of pressure from molten rock beneath the Earth’s surface. This pressure imbalance leads to a massive explosion.
These violent events are essential for the universe’s evolution. Supernovae produce elements necessary for life, and volcanoes maintain the cycling of gases like CO2, making Earth suitable for people to live on. Without these explosions, life wouldn’t exist as we know it. So, the next time someone speaks of nature’s balance, just remember - sometimes, the universe says BOOM!
4. What does the underlined word “relished” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Enjoyed. B. Questioned. C. Evaluated. D. Recorded.
5. What was the girl anxious about
A. When the universe would disappear. B. Whether her question was much too stupid.
C. Whether she would end up like exploding stars. D. How she could get good grades on astronomy.
6. Why does the author mention supernovae and volcanoes in paragraph 5
A. To list natural events. B. To make a comparison.
C. To raise safety concerns. D. To explain a concept.
7. What does the author say about the imbalance of nature
A. It results from human activities. B. It brings a great threat to animals.
C. It provides support for life on Earth. D. It is in great need of improvement.
C
As more smart cars appear on American roads, changes may come to traffic signals. Researchers at North Carolina State University are considering adding a fourth color, possibly white, to traffic lights. This color could inform drivers in traditional cars when there is a large collection of self-driving vehicles in a particular area. When many self-driving vehicles are present, the additional light would signal the drivers to follow the lead of those vehicles, improving safety and traffic flows.
The North Carolina State team thought that such changes are likely years away because this kind of system would require between 40 to 50 percent of all vehicles on the road to be self-driving.
Waymo, a self-driving vehicle company, already offers ride-sharing services using full self-driving vehicles. Those services do not use a fourth traffic light. They think it is good that researchers are thinking creatively about ways to change traffic light signals to improve safety and traffic flows. However, officials and companies should think very carefully before deciding on, and moving forward with major infrastructure (基础设施) changes.
Researchers at the University of Michigan are also testing different methods. They have carried out a test program in an area outside the city of Detroit. Their research collects information on the speed and location of General Motors (GM) vehicles in the area. The information has been used to change the timing of city traffic lights in an effort to improve traffic flows. Even with as few as 6 percent of vehicles connected to the GM system, there is still enough information to change the timing of the traffic lights enough to smooth traffic flows.
The area near Detroit where the testing is taking place has 34 traffic signals. It was picked because lights in the area are set to change at the same times each day. This is the case for more than half of traffic signals nationwide. These signals are not connected to cameras to watch traffic flows in real time.
8. What is the function of the fourth traffic signal color
A. To direct self-driving vehicles on the road. B. To instruct drivers in traditional cars.
C. To remind drivers of the traffic rules. D. To reduce the traffic speed and flow.
9. What does the research of the University of Michigan focus on
A. The timing of the city traffic lights.
B. The advantage of using cameras.
C. The number of self-driving cars on the road.
D. The reason for building transportation infrastructure.
10 Why is the area of Detroit chosen for the study
A. It has 34 traffic signals. B. It has newer infrastructure than other places.
C. Its traffic is the heaviest. D. Its traffic lights are representative in some way.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. Government should control self-driving vehicles.
B. The development of city infrastructure is necessary.
C. Self-driving cars may bring changes in traffic light signals.
D. Ways to ensure traffic safety and flows are in urgent need.

Lighthouse parenting is a modern approach that is becoming increasingly popular among parents. This style, raised by Dr. Ken Ginsburg, stresses a balance between guiding children and allowing them to make their own decisions. The name comes from the idea that parents should be like a lighthouse — available to offer support and guidance when needed, but not constantly intervening in their children’s life.
Unlike helicopter parenting which focuses on controlling and protecting the child from every possible mistake, lighthouse parenting not only provides love, guidance, and boundaries (边界), but also allows children to learn through their own experiences and mistakes. This approach helps children develop resilience (适应力) and problem-solving skills, making them better prepared for adulthood.
One of the key principles of lighthouse parenting is maintaining open communication with children. Parents are encouraged to engage in conversations with their children, listen to their concerns, and provide advice when necessary. This creates a favorable environment, where children feel confident and loved, knowing their parents are always there for them, but not controlling their every move.
The popularity of lighthouse parenting is growing because many parents are seeking a balanced approach to raising their children. There is an overwhelming amount of information available to parents today, and it can be difficult to know what to follow. Lighthouse parenting offers a practical solution, promoting a healthy, low-pressure environment for both parents and children.
Children raised in this style can become healthy, functional adults, as they were given the tools to be independent, to understand the world, and to be well-adjusted. They aren’t scared of making mistakes and also take responsibility for them. Their parents are also less burnt out, as they are able to take a step back and be there for their children more in the background.
With ongoing communication and love and support always there when needed, this parenting method seems to tick all the boxes when it comes to promoting a harmonious and enjoyable parent- child relationship. It is an environment where both children and parents can well develop and enjoy their relationship for years to come.
12. What do parents do in lighthouse parenting
A. They focus more on experiences than study.
B. They intervene in their children’s life when necessary.
C. They protect their children from every possible mistake.
D. They set strict boundaries of amusements.
13. What makes lighthouse parenting increasingly popular
A. Parents’ desire for a balance in raising children. B. The limited access to parenting information.
C. The stress faced with children. D. Parents’ expectation of raising a perfect child.
14. What can we know about children raised in lighthouse parenting
A. They will fit in easily. B. They will perform well academically.
C. They show great curiosity about the outer world. D. They tend to be especially popular.
15. What would be a suitable title for the text
A. The Importance of Balanced Parenting B. The Disadvantages of Helicopter Parenting
C. How to Raise Independent and Resilient Children D. The Benefits of Lighthouse Parenting

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ever get the feeling that you’ re your own worst enemy That’s how I felt when I saw a WeChat acquaintance (熟人) inviting people to join her newly organized book club. Normally, I’d close the app — I’m not the sort of person who talks with strangers, even over a shared love of reading. However, in a burst of optimism, I sent her a message and agreed to show up.
Fast-forward to the night of the book club, which found me parked outside a complete stranger’s house with a copy of Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun also Rises in hand. I didn’t want to get out of the car. My positive attitude had disappeared. Why had I agreed to hang out with people I had never met before
Blame it on science: I learned from experts that connecting with strangers and finding a community would make me happier. At least, I was sure it would once I got out of the car.
The world is full of successful extroverts (性格外向者): presidents, queens, sports heroes and talk-show hosts like Oprah. Me I’m an introvert who has tried to become the life of the party since my teenage years. Or, at least, pretend to be.
Since my children are nearly grown and that I’m approaching the second half of my life with fewer friends than I wanted, I knew I had to make a change. Rather than giving in to my hermit (隐士) ways, I decided to set a goal: learn what it takes to become more extroverted. In other words, I had to do the thing I feared the most — I had to talk with strangers. Having a conversation with someone you don’t know doesn’t seem like it would improve your life, but those first awkward steps can result in relationships that feed your soul in surprising ways.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then I took a deep breath and stepped out of the car.

As the evening went on, I found myself engaged in lively discussions.

【答案】Dear Clay,
I’m Li Hua, from Guangming Senior High School. Over the past month, I’ve been struggling with time management and stress problems due to an overwhelming amount of schoolwork. The pressure has been affecting me deeply, so I’m reaching out to seek your help.
Although I try to make schedules, I find it challenging to stick to them, which makes me fall behind, feel anxious, and lose confidence. This negative cycle has impacted both my studies and my personal life, leaving me disappointed and unsure of how to regain control.
I’d greatly appreciate any advice you could offer on improving time management and staying motivated. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】 Then I took a deep breath and stepped out of the car. My heart raced with each step forward. As I approached the front door, I could hear laughter coming from inside. I hesitated for a moment, considering going back. But I reminded myself of my goal. With a mix of anxiety and excitement, I rang the doorbell. The moment I was welcomed in, the warmth of the room and the smiles of the other attendees made my fears fade away. I held my book tightly, but when introductions began, I slowly relaxed.
As the evening went on, I found myself engaged in lively discussions. We exchanged thoughts on Hemingway’ s themes, laughed over shared experiences, and discovered common interests. I was surprised at how easily the conversations flowed. Each connection I made was like a small victory, helping me overcome my fear of interacting with new people. At the end of the night, I left not only with new friendships but also with new-found confidence. I realized that stepping out of my comfort zone was not just about overcoming fear; it was also about embracing the joy of connection that I had longed for.
