教材分析
What:本文的主题语境为人与自我中的生活与学习。语篇的主题为“写一封建议信”(Write a letter of advice)。本文为青少年咨询师 Susan Luo 写的一封建议信,主要内容是给一位担心朋友沉迷网络的学生的回信,在信中给出了一些该如何帮助朋友戒掉网瘾的有效建议。
Why:在高中阶段,学生正处于思想活跃,渴望独立的时期。因此,这个年龄段的学生会面临很多成长的烦恼,但是很多学生没有找到合适的纾解情绪和解决问题的方式,亟需家长和老师的引导。本板块的活动旨在让学生体会到沟通的重要性,帮助他们解决生活中出现的一些实际问题。
How:本文是一封比较正式的信件,包括日期、称呼、正文、结尾和签名。正文分为两部分,第一段为第一部分,对来信人的问题共情,拉近彼此距离;第二部分为第二段,着重阐述具体的建议和建议的理由。文章的语言特点鲜明,主要是希望学生掌握提建议的表达方式,包括“I recommend that...”、“I think you should...”“Why not...”等。
学情分析
教学对象为高一新生。大多数学生正处于适应高中新的学习生活时期,对于学校生活正处于适应阶段,难免出现各种问题。因此,老师和家长及时的指导是非常有必要的。通过建议信与学生进行沟通,是一种有效的交流思想的手段,学生也普遍易于接受这一方式。多数学生已具备基本的写作能力,部分学生能用英语自信地表达观点。但多数学生对建议信的格式,具体写法以及建议信的具体表达尚不熟悉,需要进行专门的学习和训练。
教学目标
By the end of the class,
1.Students will be able to read a letter of advice and gather information.
2.Students will be able to analyze the letter’s organization and language feature.
3.Students will be able to use what they have learned to write a letter of advice.
重点难点
教学重点:
1.掌握建议信的格式、写作手法和语言特点。
2.熟练运用提建议的表达方式。
教学难点:
运用所学知识写一封格式正确,内容合理的建议信。

Step2 While-reading Activity 1:Observe the format of this letter Activity2:Read for main idea read the passage quickly and answer the following two questions. ①What is worried friend’s problem ②What are Susan Luo’s suggestions ③Besides suggestions, what else does Susan Luo say in her letter Activity3:Read for structure ①Find and mark the parts of the letter that match the following points. Para 1 A. I know what the problem is. Para 2 B. I understand how you feel. Para 3 C. This is my advice and reason(s). Para 4 D. I think my advice will help ②How many parts can be divided in a letter of advice and what are they Activity4:Read for language features ①Why does Susan repeat the problem at the beginning of the letter What’s the function of the circled words “understand quite well” ②What expressions does Susan Luo use to make suggestions Do you know any other useful expressions to make suggestions Activity5:Conclude and Summarize Make a mind map of how to write a letter of advice. 引导学生观察建议信的格式和写作要点,熟悉写建议信的基本要求通过归纳总结,深入分析建议信的内容和文章结构,进一步为学生学习建议信写作打下基础。从内容层面过渡到具体写作层面,指导学生关注语言本身,并教导学生运用一定的修辞手法进行写作。 引导学生通过思维导图更加清晰直观地了解建议信的写作结 构以及语言表达。
Step3: Post-reading- Group discussion Activity: Choose one of the teenagers and discussion his/her problem. List possible suggestions and reasons. 通过小组合作,总结写建议信的步骤,并将学习内容运用于实践中,为实际写作打好基础。
Step4: Write and show Activity1: ①Based on the above discussion and write a letter of advice. ②Invite some students to display their compositions. Activity2: Use the checklist to give feedback on your partner’s draft. Activity3: Appreciate a composition written by the teacher. 1.通过讨论结果学以致用,开始进行实际写作;进一步夯实建议信写作。 2.写作后指导学生根据一定标准评价自己的作文,从不同角度提升学生的写作能力。
Step5 Assignment Revise your letter and polish your passage with the skills we have learned this class. 根据评分细则进一步润色建议信。
Writing: The checklist Dear Xu Ting, You are worried that you feel very terrible about being lonely. I understand how you feel and it is quite common for teenagers to feel lonely when they live away from their parents. To be honest, I think it would be a good idea if you could join some after-school activities, such as a volunteer club, which will give you a chance to be around other people, and help you realize that other people have problems, too. Moreover, connecting with your parents online is also a great idea. Being far away doesn’t mean that you can’t talk to them. Last but not least, it couldn’t be better if you could try new hobbies. Not only can it make your spare time fulfilling but also you can improve yourself. Hopefully, you’ll find my suggestions helpful and I’m sure that in this way you will feel relaxed and much better.
