Community causes in the UK work hard to provide help to people who need it most. Thanks to Co-op members, more help is now available to local causes supporting their communities.
West Yorkshire-based Food for Families is one of many local causes in the UK working to feed people in need. Families can pick up ready-made food packs at the same time as picking up the kids from school. Now Food for Families has been given its own helping hand, thanks to 5,000 from Co-op’s Winners Share It All prize draw activity. Food for Families was chosen by a Co-op member, who also received their own 500 prize.
Winning causes
Food for Families is just one of around 2,500 Local Community Fund causes that Co-op members support throughout the year, with 90 causes receiving 5,000 each from Co-op members.
How you can get involved
Simply choose your Local Community Fund cause through the Co-op website or app. Then spend 5, either in-store or online through shop.coop.co.uk.
Scan your membership card and you will be entered every month for a chance to win big for you and your community. Members get additional entries for every 5 spent.
There will be 10 winners every month at present, so there are plenty of chances to win. Non-members can also become a Co-op member and take part for just 1 through the Co-op app.
The Winners Share It All prize draw is designed to help boost Co-op’s existing support for thousands of grassroots causes. The Local Community Fund has supported nearly 40,000 projects since 2016, and in total, 108 million has been raised by Co-op members.

Have you ever read a book and found that one of the characters is exactly your carbon copy And you relate to the character so well that you can’t help but wonder if the author had somehow observed your own life Well, that is Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables for me.
There are many instances in the book where I particularly felt connected to little Anne, like the one where she does a performance at a school concert. Although she has gone up on stage several times before, this is the time she gets a taste of stage fright. The same thing happened to me during a poetry competition in high school. Never did I find the stage as intimidating as I did on that day. There’s another situation where her friends don’t miss home as much, while Anne is terribly homesick. I could imagine how Anne feels. I’ve always wondered how people can move out of a place where they’ve spent their entire childhood and not feel even a pinch of sorrow.
Whether it is the world of imagination that she loves to weave, or the experience of growing up as a lonely child, or the beautiful moments of daydreaming, or her fondness for nature, Anne is me, through and through. As I read through the chapters learning about her chattering nature as a kid that grew quieter during adolescence and the respect for her teachers, I saw myself in her.
I grew so close to Anne and her friendships, her school and her dear little Green Gables and its inhabitants, that I couldn’t control my tears when I finished reading the last chapter. That’s what books do. They give you the freedom to live inside their fictional world even when you’re aware that you’re only a reader who exists outside. And although your existence inside that fictional world is imaginary and temporary, you end up cherishing that experience for a lifetime.

A.Competitive but self-centered.
B.Proud and dream-pursuing.
C.Creative but lonely-minded.

A.She hated to part with her beloved characters.
B.She was moved by Anne’s tough experience.
C.She failed to understand the story in the book.
D.She was unhappy with the ending of the book.
There’s a lot that go into an Olympic athlete’s winning gold medals — years of training and an athlete’s age. A team of University of Waterloo students used data to figure out when an Olympic track-and-field athletes’ peak performance will be.
Track-and-field includes running, jumping, throwing, and other events. Most athletes’ career performance progressions can typically be described as a bell curve (钟形曲线), in which they train over several years to reach their best performance, at a certain age and then gradually decrease.
The researchers studied the year-by-year career performance data from every track and field athlete who has competed in an individual event at an Olympics since the 1996 Games in Atlanta. They analyzed the data that considered five factors: man or woman, nationality, event type, how long the athlete had been training at a high level, and whether or not it was an Olympic year.
They found that the average age of participation of Olympic track-and-field athletes has remained remarkably similar for both men and women over the past three decades: just under 27 years old. "Interestingly enough, our study also showed that on average the peak age for these athletes was 27," said David Awosoga, the lead author on the research.
After the age of 27, there is only a 44% probability that an athlete’s peak is still ahead of them, and this number drops every year. "Age, however, isn’t the only factor in an athlete’s peak," said Matthew Chow, co-author of the research.
While the researchers emphasize that their analysis is mainly in theory, they hope the findings can be helpful for both athletes and fans. "Our main takeaway is that we have established a list of variables (变量) that help predict when your peak will be," Awosoga said. "You can’t change the year of the Olympics, your genetics, or your nationality, but you might change your training to better go with these biological and external factors."
8.What data about the athletes was considered in the study

C.The average peak age for track-and-field champions is 27.
D.It’s easy to predict an athlete’s performance using the findings,
10.What does David Awosoga intend to convey in the last paragraph
A.Their study is helpful.
B.Their analysis is practical.
C.Variables might play a key role.
D.External factors are unavoidable.

A.To remind.
B.To inspire.
C.To compare.

Body language is an essential part of communication and can be just as important as our verbal (口头的) exchanges. Body language can be conscious or unconscious actions, so it is important to make sure your body is sending the same messages as your words to ensure good communication. These nonverbal cues can strengthen the verbal messages you’re sending or lead to mistrust or confusion-signs of poor communication and misunderstanding.
Body language can make interacting with others and expressing yourself much easier, but it can also introduce new challenges. Some nonverbal signs unintentionally communicate parts of ourselves that we don’t want others to know. For example, bad posture or fidgeting (坐立不安) may communicate lack of confidence, something we may not intend for others to know about us. But body language can strengthen our verbal messages and solidify what we are telling others. Facing someone with eye contact or taking notes while someone is speaking can communicate genuine interest. Without these signs, teachers may not be able to assess a student’s understanding.
When you’re speaking sincerely, it’s natural for your body language to respond to your words through gestures or facial expressions. We also use gestures in conversations to tell stories or describe objects, often using hand signals to show how big or small something is. These are largely unconscious, naturally occurring forms of body language.
It can be difficult to communicate confidence in your actions when you may not feel it internally. When you display confident body language, such as good posture or eye contact, even if you’re making a conscious effort, studies have shown that it can lead to feeling more confident. When speaking to others, practice controlling impulses to fidget and planting your feet confidently to increase self-esteem.
12. What will your body language tell if it doesn’t go with your speech
A.Wrong information.
B.True meaning behind words.
C.A broken relationship.
D.A dull speech.
13. Why does the author give some examples in paragraph 2
A.To prove body language is necessary.
B.To state how to assess a student’s understanding.
C.To tell body language can show the true side of us.
D.To explain how challenging it is to read body language.
14. What does the author intend to tell in the last two paragraphs
A.Proper body language can help us in gaining confidence.
B.Hand signals are essential ways to make ourselves understood.
C.Naturally occurring forms of body language make us confident.
D.When speaking to others, try your best to hide your body language.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Keeping proper body language
B.Using your body to communicate
C.Understanding others by body language
D.Being smart in showing your body language

Noah, a journalist, was on his way to a remote region in California for an assignment. The sun was high in the June sky as he navigated the roads that snaked through the hills. The air conditioning in his car seemed to struggle against the relentless heat.
As the clock struck noon, Noah’s car suddenly came to a stop. The engine refused to turn over, leaving him stranded (使滞留) in the middle of nowhere. Sweat trickled down his back as he tried to restart the car, but in vain. His water supply was limited, and the heat was becoming unbearable. With no other option, he decided to seek help on foot, hoping to find someone who could assist him.
After walking for a long distance, Noah spotted a farm. As he approached, he was amazed by the sight that greeted him: An expanse of lush greenery that seemed to stretch on forever. Upon closer inspection, he found it was a vast grove of lychee (荔枝) trees, their branches filled with ripe, red fruits. The sight was so breathtaking that he couldn’t help but take several photographs, capturing the vibrant scene.
Just then, a man in his fifties, wearing a large-brimmed hat that protected his face from the sun, approached Noah with a curious expression. It was the owner of the farm, Lucas. After hearing about Noah’s situation, Lucas
wasted no time in calling for help to repair Noah’s car. In the meantime, he invited Noah into his cabin to have a rest and escape the scorching sun.
Inside the cabin, as they sat and talked, Lucas fetched some of the lychees from his grove and shared them with Noah, who was amazed by their flavor. He had never tasted so sweet, juicy lychees. Lucas talked proudly about his journey of cultivating lychees, from the initial challenges of working with the deserted land to the success of producing a bountiful harvest.

Now Food for Families has been given its own helping hand, thanks to 5,000 from Co-op’s Winners Share It All prize draw activity."可知,Food for Families得到了来自Co-op的"Winners Share It All"抽奖活动提供的5000英镑的帮助,也就是Co-op为它提供了一笔资金,所以选择C选项。
90 causes receiving 5,000 each from Co-op members",即有90个项目每个能从Co-op成员那里获得5000英镑,那么每个月Co-op提供给社区项目的资金总额为90×5000 = 450000英镑,所以选择B选项。
How you can get involved"部分内容"Simply choose your Local Community Fund cause through the Co-op website or app. Then spend 5, either in-store or online through shop.coop.co.uk. Scan your membership card and you will be entered every month for a chance to win big for you and your community. Members get additional entries for every 5 spent."
7.答案: A
They analyzed the data that considered five factors: man or woman, nationality, event type, how long the athlete had been training at a high level, and whether of not it was an Olympic year.
Interestingly enough, our study also showed that on average the peak age for these athletes was 27(有趣的是,我们的研究还表明,这些运动员的平均巅峰年龄是27岁)可知,田径冠军的平均巅峰年龄是27岁。故选C项。
10.答案: A
Our main takeaway is that we have established a list of variables(变量) that help predict when your peak will be (我们的主要结论是,我们已经建立了一个变量列表,可以帮助预测你的巅峰出现的时间)和You can’t change the year of the Olympics, your genetics, or your nationality, but you might change your training to better go with these biological and external factors.(你不能改变奥运会的年份,你的基因,或者你的国籍,但你可以改变你的训练,以更好地适应这些生理和外部因素)可知,Awosoga指出他们的研究可以帮助预测田径运动员巅峰出现的时间,从而通过调整训练来适应不可变的生理和外部因素。 故选A项。
12.答案: A
Body language can be conscious or unconscious actions, so it is important to make sure your body is sending the same messages as your words to ensure good communication. These nonverbal cues can strengthen the verbal messages you’re sending or lead to mistrust or confusion - signs of poor communication and misunderstanding."
13.答案: C
解析: 第二段先是提到身体语言会带来新挑战,有些非言语信号会无意地传达出我们不想让别人知道的自身情况,接着举例"bad posture or fidgeting (坐立不安) may communicate lack of confidence, something we may not intend for others to know about us."等,就是为了说明身体语言能够展现出我们真实的一面(show the true side of us),所以选择C选项。
14.答案: A
(Proper body language can help us in gaining confidence),所以选择A选项。
Body language is an essential part of communication and can be just as important as our verbal (Using your body to communicate)这一主题,所以选择B选项。
17.答案: D

18.答案: B
解析: "It struck me that..."
I hadn’t noticed he was becoming forgetful"可知,作者之前没注意到父亲变得健忘,也就是错过了很多能体现父亲状态变化的迹象(signs),所以选择D选项。
20.答案: A

22.答案: C

I hugged him saying it wasn’t his ____31____."
28.答案: A
解析: 根据后文"by the end of 2022 he was in a wheelchair"可知,父亲的阿尔茨海默病相对(relatively)发展得很快,所以短时间内就坐上了轮椅,所以选择A选项。
Mum was determined to keep Dad at home with us for as long as possible."
30.答案: C
解析: 根据后文"because I always saw in his eyes how much he loved me"可知,作者觉得自己有机会陪伴(accompany)父亲是幸运的,能从父亲眼中看到对自己的爱,所以选择C选项。
31.答案: D
解析: 根据后文"but when you love someone, you do whatever you can to make life OK for them"可知,虽然照顾病人似乎是个挑战(challenge),但因为爱着对方,就会尽力让对方生活好一些,所以选择D选项。
32.答案: its; brighten; trying; initially; attractive; a; questions; with; has shared; where

34.答案:
However, Lucas’ smile faded, and he sighed deeply. He explained that despite the abundance of his lychees, he struggled to find buyers who would appreciate their unique flavor and freshness. Many of the local markets were already saturated with lychees from other farms, making it difficult for him to stand out. Noah listened intently, realizing that Lucas’ tale of success was intertwined with challenges that threatened to undermine his hard work. He felt a sense of responsibility to help Lucas overcome these obstacles.
Once back in the city, Noah decided to use his profession to do something for Lucas and his abundant lychees. He crafted an engaging article, highlighting the story of Lucas’ farm, the sweetness of his lychees, and the challenges he faced in bringing his produce to market. The article quickly garnered attention, drawing in readers who were eager to support small, local farmers. Noah even organized a lychee tasting event, inviting food bloggers and influencers to sample Lucas’ lychees and share their positive experiences with their followers. It was successful with Lucas’ farm receiving a surge of orders.
