As a child, Mateo DeLa Rocha dreamed of working as a garbage man. In his home city, trash piles were everywhere. The local sanitation worker was the only person cleaning up the pollution.
DeLa Rocha’s family later moved to the United States. Now as a high school senior, he has found a unique way to tackle pollution: Along with two friends, he raised $11, 000 to plug an abandoned oil well in Ohio that was leaking gas close to a barn on a horse farm.
As many as 3. 9 million abandoned and aging oil and gas wells are spread across the U. S. , according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and at least 126, 000 of these wells are "orphans". This means there is no owner or company to be held responsible for them.
The EPA estimates that abandoned wells collectively released 303. 000 tonnes of methane in 2022. That’s roughly equivalent. to the annual carbon dioxide emissions of 23 gas-burning power plants.
After completing his AP Environmental Science class, DeLa Rocha realized the issue of abandoned wells was something for which individuals could potentially make a difference. He then invited two classmates, Sebastian Ng and Lila Gisondi, to join him.
"When Mateo approached me about this, I looked into these methane wells and what we could do about them," Ng said. "It kind of flipped a switch." Previously, he had felt helpless about climate change but would simply joke about the world ending.
For Gisondi, talking with her friends about these methane-emitting wells brought climate change from the back of her mind to the forefront. "It was something that I felt I could actually help with," she said.
After more research, the trio connected with The Well Done Foundation (WDF), a nonprofit organization specializing in plugging orphaned wells. The organization was founded by Curtis Shuck, a veteran of the oil and gas industry. Since 2019, his organization has surveyed more than 1, 700 abandoned wells nationwide and plugged 44 of what they identified as the most problematic ones.
On May 23, contractors poured the cement to plug the orphaned well in Ohio. With the initial success, DeLa Rocha, Ng and Gisondi are now more confident about the future of their cause.
4. What inspired DeLa Rocha’s interest in environmental issues initially

Scientists have solved a puzzle about modern humans, after research showed that a famous skull of a human ancestor found in South Africa is a million years older than experts thought. This discovery has changed what we know of human history.
The skull, which scientists have named "Mrs Ples", is from an ape-like human relative from a species called Australopithecus africanus It was found near Johannesburg in 1947 and, based on evidence from its surroundings, was thought to be between 2. 1 and 2. 6 million years old. This puzzled scientists, because although Mrs Ples looks like a possible early ancestor of early humans, the first true humans had already evolved by the time she apparently lived. For this reason, scientists had decided that Australopithecus afarensis, a similar species from East Africa that lived about 3.5 million years ago, was our most likely ancestor instead.
To get a more accurate age for Mrs Ples, a team led by Professor Darryl Granger of Purdue University in Indiana, US, used a new method to date the sandy rocks where the skull lay. They measured the amount of certain chemicals in rocks, which form at a steady rate when they are exposed to cosmic rays (宇宙射线) on Earth’s surface. Once rocks are buried, these chemicals stop forming and slowly disappear;the surviving amount reveals how much time has passed since the rock (or bones) were on the surface.
The new study shows that Mrs Ples and other australopithecine bones nearby are between 3.4 and 3.7 million years old. This means they lived at the same time as their East African relatives, so that either group could have given rise to modern humans. However, team member Dr Laurent Bruxelles pointed out that over millions of years, at only 2,500 miles away, these groups had plenty of time to travel and to breed with each other. In other words, the groups could quite easily have met, had children together and both been part of the history of modern humans.
8. What can we learn about Mrs Ples from the first two paragraphs
A.It is a skull found in East Africa.
B.It is the most possible ancestor of humans.
C.It is a million years older than scientists expected.
D.It is proved to live between 2.1 and 2.6 million years ago.
9. How did scientists get the accurate age of "Mrs Ples"
A.By studying the effect of cosmic rays.
B.By calculating the forming rate of chemicals.
C.By locating the sandy rocks where the skull lay.
D.By measuring the surviving amount of chemicals.
10. What can we infer from the new study
A.Modern humans came into being in East Africa.
B.Mrs Ples travelled and had children with East African relatives.
C.The history of modern humans might begin 3.5 million years ago.
D.Ape-like species from Africa could have interacted with each other.
11. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A.Historical Puzzle Unsolved
B.Ancestor Mystery Solved
C.Mrs Ples: The Earliest Human Being
D.Mrs Ples: A Famous Skull
In an empty parking lot, a car "thinks" it is on a real road. Researchers at the Ohio State University have developed new software to aid in the development, evaluation and demonstration of safer driverless vehicles. Called the Vehicle-in-Virtual-Environment (VVE) method, it allows the testing of driverless cars in a perfectly safe environment, said Bilin Aksun-Guvene, co-author of the study and a professor of Ohio State.
Although autonomous driving technologies have become a much more common sight on the road in the last few years, due to the increasing number of accidents these systems have caused. the way these technologies are tested deserves closer observation.
Current approaches for demonstrating autonomous vehicle functions involve testing software and technology first in simulations (模拟) and then on public roads. Yet this method essentially turns other road users into involuntary participants in these driving experiments. Such risks can make the entire development process costly, inefficient, and potentially unsafe for both drivers and pedestrians (行人) alike.
To overcome the limitations of these faulty assessments, researchers in this study equipped a real vehicle with simulated data to connect its controls to a highly realistic 3D environment. much like giving the machine a VR headset or virtual reality glasses. After feeding the data to the driving system’s computers and syncing (同步) the car’s real motions with the simulations’, researchers were able to show that it behaves as if the virtual environment were its true surroundings in real time.
But what makes their software especially powerful, said Aksun-Guvenc, is the strength of how flexible their virtual environment can be. “When actual senses are replaced by virtual senses, the model can be easily changed to fit any kind of scenario,” said Guvenc.
"We could see this technology becoming an important product in the industry in the next 5 or 10 years. That’s why we’re focusing on building more applications for it." Guvene added.
12. What can we say about autonomous driving
A.It is free of dangers.
B.It definitely has a long way to go.
C.Its safety testing matters.
D.Its technology is mature.
13. What are the features of VVE method
A.Safe and real.
B.Easy and cheap.
C.Costly and inefficient.
D.Tough and complicated.
14. What does the underlined word "scenario" in Paragraph 5 mean
A.Strategy.
B.Experiment.
C.Revision.
D.Situation.
15. What is the best title for the text
A.Overcoming the Limitations of Autonomous Driving
B.Testing Real Driverless Cars in a Virtual Environment
C.Making Autonomous Driving More Common on the Road
D.Focusing on Building More Applications for Driverless Cars

FOMO stands for “fear of missing out”. It refers to that the nervous or anxious feeling a person gets when they realize they are not attending a social event either because they weren’t invited or they just didn’t feel like going. ① This belief, in turn, can create anxiety and a sense of inferiority. FOMO bothers most teens, especially if they9re often online.
One effective way for teens to deal with FOMO is to practice what is known as re-framing(重塑) thinking. ② Here are some tips on how teens can start to reframe their thinking.
Track negative thoughts and replace them with reasonable ones. One thing teens can do to deal with FOMO is to track their negative thoughts and feelings in a journal. ③ Then, they can change their thoughts and replace the negative thoughts with something positive.
④ Encourage teens to recognize that they have limited time and cannot possibly be everywhere and do everything. So, naturally, there will be social events that they cannot attend. But this does not mean that they’re necessarily missing out on something.
Turning off the technology. This seems like a natural cure for FOMO. But just switching the phone off does not erase the feelings that FOMO causes. ⑤ The key is to do something else entirely like reading a book or baking cookies-anything that allows them to focus on something other than social media.
A. Be realistic about availability.
B. There are some negative consequences of FOMO.
C. Realize that no one lives a perfect life as described on social media.
D. It’s a mental exercise designed to help them look at situations differently.
E. In general, FOMO causes people to assume that they have a low social rank.
F. Teens may still worry about missing out even if they9re not on social media at all.
G. This allows them to observe how often they5re feeling negative about themselves.

Traveling to China as a foreigner isn’t the simplest affair. Visa applications can be complicated, and navigating (穿梭) this highly automated society with① (it) own digital ecosystem can be frightening.
But things may be changing. China has been making efforts to attract international travelers by introducing more② (welcome) policies. The country now offers visa exemptions (免签) for dozens of nationalities, as well as③ 144-hour visa-free transit (运输) policy at a growing number of ports of entry.
Meanwhile, mobile wallet giants like Alipay and WeChat have made their apps and online④ (pay) more foreigner-friendly by simplifying their lengthy set-up processes⑤ accepting international credit cards.
Hotels and attractions are also being asked to accept international credit cards,⑥ are not popular
among traders in China. Some cities like Beijing have launched all-in-one⑦ (pass) that allow travelers to pay for things like attraction admissions and public transit⑧ (electronic).
These measures seem to be working. China welcomed about 14 million foreign visitors in the first half of 2024, a 152.7% increase from 2023. The number is still a long way off from 2019 figures, but some in the industry feel⑨ (encourage).

Knock-knock-knock. "Hello " I called timidly through my cousin Anita’ s bedroom door. No answer. There’s no way she forgot I was moving in today, right I thought. "Anita It’s me, Norah! " I called again.
I had only met my cousin once a couple of years ago when Anita and Aunt Sonam had flown to California to visit. Mom had hoped Anita and I would be friends. But all Anita wanted to talk about was soccer, which was practically a foreign language to me. Secretly, I had felt relieved when the visit was over.
Now, I was standing in my aunt’s tiny apartment in New York City, and there was still no answer from Anita. I knocked again, a little louder this time. Finally, Anita opened the door. She apologized, saying she had been listening to music. But instead of inviting me in, Anita frowned at my massive suitcase.
Behind her, I could see a blue beanbag chair crowded next to a bunk bed(上下铺). In my old room in California, I’d had a double bed all to myself, and my original artwork had covered all the walls. Anita’s walls, on the other hand, were covered with posters of the U. S. women’s soccer team. I didn’t see any free space to hang anything else.
"C-can I come in " I asked, blushing. Anita nodded, but she barely moved. I had no choice but to squeeze by her into the room. I put my stuff against the wall and Anita started bouncing the soccer ball from her foot to her knee and back again. Suddenly, her foot kicked the ball at an odd angle, and it accidentally flew toward me. "Whoops! " Anita called. "Think fast! "
But I was still taking in the surroundings, so the ball caught me off guard and bounced off my shoulder. Forcing a smile, I pretended it didn’t bother me. Unsure of what to do, I took out my sketchbook(素描本) and colored pencils and sat down. Just holding my sketchbook made me feel more at ease. I started sketching aimlessly while Anita went back to bounce her ball.
Suddenly, it dawned on me that I could draw Anita in action.

Scientists have solved a puzzle about modern humans, after research showed that a famous skull of a human ancestor found in South Africa is a million years older than experts thought."
They measured the amount of certain chemicals in rocks, which form at a steady rate when they are exposed to cosmic rays (宇宙射线) on Earth’s surface. Once rocks are buried, these chemicals stop forming and slowly disappear;the surviving amount reveals how much time has passed since the rock (or bones) were on the surface."
However, team member Dr Laurent Bruxelles pointed out that over millions of years, at only 2,500 miles away, these groups had plenty of time to travel and to breed with each other. In other words, the groups could quite easily have met, had children together and both been part of the history of modern humans."
Although autonomous driving technologies have become a much more common sight on the road in the last few years, due to the increasing number of accidents these systems have caused, the way these technologies are tested deserves closer observation."
13.答案: A
Called the Vehicle-in-Virtual-Environment (VVE) method, it allows the testing of driverless cars in a perfectly safe environment"以及后文对其具体操作及优势的描述可知,VVE方法的特点是安全(Safe)且能营造出较为真实的环境让无人驾驶汽车进行测试,也就是具有真实感(real),所以选择A选项。
When actual senses are replaced by virtual senses, the model can be easily changed to fit any kind of scenario",当实际感官被虚拟感官替代时,模型能轻易改变以适应任何一种情景(situation),这里"scenario"表达的就是类似"情况、情景"的意思,所以选择D选项。
Testing Real Driverless Cars in a Virtual Environment"(在虚拟环境中测试真实无人驾驶汽车)作为标题最合适,选择B选项。

Embrace English, Show Ourselves
Last week witnessed huge success of our school’s English Week themed "Embrace English, Show Ourselves".
Among the many events, the one that has left a lasting impression on me is the "English Drama Night". Students from different classes grouped together to perform English plays, ranging from classic Shakespearean tragedies to contemporary pieces. I was not only impressed by my fellow students’ excellent command of the English language, but also deeply moved by their vivid portrayal of the characters.
The week serves as a reminder that learning English is not just about mastering grammar and vocabulary. It is also about self-expression. Now, I’m more motivated than ever to continue improving my English to bring out the best in myself.

34.答案:
Suddenly, it dawned on me that I could draw Anita in action. Quickly turning to a blank page, I broadly outlined the shape of my cousin bouncing the soccer ball. My spirits rose with each new line I drew. It was true that I didn’t enjoy playing sports, but I was really enjoying the challenge of trying to sketch my cousin in action! Although it was my first attempt at something like this, I was pleased with the way I’d captured the energy of Anita’s movements. As I was examining my drawing, I didn’t notice the soccer ball was no longer bouncing. I glanced up to see Anita curiously eyeing my drawing. Nervously, I handed the sketchbook to her.
Anita studied the drawing carefully. I resisted the urge to grab the sketchbook and hide. She must think it was totally weird. However, Anita said it was awesome and asked if she could have it. Before I could respond, she had already ripped the drawing out of the sketchbook. Then Anita rummaged through a drawer for a tape, saying that she wasn’t really into art, but thought the drawing should definitely be on display in "our room". After taping the drawing over one of her posters, Anita said a few changes needed to be made around the room if I was moving in. With a broad smile, I picked up Anita’s soccer ball and tossed it toward my new roommate. "Think fast! "
