Step 1 Lead-in
T shows Ss some pictures and asks Ss some questions.
T: Are you familiar with the National Gallery Have you ever been there before Visiting galleries will give the public more chances to appreciate the art of painting.

Step 2 Reading and answering the questions
T asks Ss to read the blog entry on page 34 and answer the following questions.
T: As for art fans, visiting art museums or galleries is a very rewarding experience. Yesterday a blogger visited the National Gallery. Try to read this blog entry and answer the following questions.
Where did the writer go to see the paintings
What did many people do when they were viewing artworks according to the blog entry
What was the writer’s attitude towards the act of viewing artworks through smartphones
Suggested answers:
The writer saw the paintings in the National Gallery.
Many people viewed important and precious artworks through their smartphones. They seemed more interested in taking photos and recording videos of artworks than appreciating them with their own eyes.
The writer felt shocked and believed it was impossible to truly appreciate the human touch of a
great painting through a smartphone.

Step 3 Exploring the rules concerning verb-ing and verb-edforms as predicatives
1. T asks Ss to find out verb-ing and verb-ed forms as predicatives in the blog entry.
T : Now look at these two sentences. It was surprising then ... and I was amazed to see all the paintings. In these two sentences, what element is the verb-ing form used as and verb-ed form Can you find other sentences with verb-ing and verb-ed forms as predicatives in this blog entry
2. T asks Ss to work out the rules according to the sentences above.
When used as the predicative, the verb-ing or verb-ed form is connected to the subject by a linking verb.
The verb-ing form is often used to describe a thing or a situation; the verb-ed form is often used to describe how a person feels.
3. T asks Ss to summarize linking verbs.

Step 4 Applying the rules
1. T asks Ss to complete the following sentences.
T: Appreciating art show is enjoyable. Try to complete the following sentences.
I am excited to hear that there will be an art show in our town.
The art show in our town next week sounds appealing.
The public were pleased that they would have free access to these exhibitions.
The artworks being shown look inspiring.
I find the soft colours in this painting very relaxing.
The woman in this painting seems depressed.
The gallery staff’s job is keeping order.
The gallery staff looked very tired after working all day.
2. T asks Ss to finish B2 on page 35.
T: It is quite common to see many people take photos and record videos of artworks than appreciating them with their own eyes. So the museums are discussing measures to encourage people to appreciate art with their own plete the article with the correct forms of the verbs in the box below.
