Unit 4 Exploring poetry
Project(教学设计)
I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
appreciate some classic poems and choose one for recital;
obtain a comprehensive understanding of the given poem;
evaluate the works of other group members and present group work.
II. Key competence focus
1. Develop the ability to appreciate poetry.
2. Try to give a poetry recital in front of the class.
III. Predicted area of difficulty
1. Make appropriate suggestions about others’ performance.
2. Transfer emotions to the audience while reciting the poem.
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
1. T leads students to recall their experiences of reciting a poem in front of people.
T: Most of us have recited a poem at some point in our lives. I’d like you to share your stories with us!
2. T asks them to think about the benefits of performing a poetry recital.
T: Looking back on your experiences, what have you learnt from the poetry recital What are the differences between reading the poems by yourself and reciting them as a performance How did it benefit you

Step 2 Choosing a poem for your recital
T leads Ss to discuss their favourite poems and gives Ss instructions on how to choose the poem suitable for recital.
T: Next, please list your three favourite poems and think about these questions: Which one is the most suitable for you to recite What will the most memorable poetry performance be like When choosing your poem, ask yourself: Have I clearly understood the theme of the poem Have I managed the complexity of this poem well What is the emotion expressed by the poet Only when you have clear answers to these questions can you make your choice.

Step 3 Practicing reciting the poem
1. Understand your poem
T helps Ss to analyse the content and the structure, especially pay attention to the rhythm. Use the given poem “If” as an example. Share some background information of the poem with Ss.
T: Do you know the story behind this poem What’s the theme of the poem
T: It is a poem written by Kipling to his 12-year-old son. This poem is so inspiring that many people, especially teenagers, often use it to encourage themselves to move forward.
2. Memorize your poem
T gives advice on how to memorize a poem.
T: John Hollander says, “We speak of memorizing as getting something ‘by heart’ which really means ‘by head’. But getting a poem or prose passage truly ‘by heart’ implies getting it by mind and memory and understanding and delight.”
3. Recite your poem
T divides Ss into groups and encourages them to present their recital.
T: Practice reciting the poem within your group. When one member is reciting, the other members act as audience and offers advice and suggestions on how to improve the performance.
4. Tasks for each member during group work
GM 1: be the reciter
GM 2: tear down or question every aspect of the recital
GM 3: help classify those criticisms
GM 4: be less critical and more concerned with the creativity
5. Tips for reciting a poem
After Ss finish their teamwork, T has Ss read the tips on page 55 together in order to make them more skilled when reciting a poem.
【设计意图:引导学生合理分工,更高效地提高朗诵诗歌的能力。让学生得以在小组合作的过程中碰撞思维,发现自身的优缺点,对同伴进行合理评价和建议,培养团队合作的能力。】
Step 5 Presentation and assessment
T asks Ss to give a presentation in groups in front of the class.
T asks Ss to evaluate other groups’ works and ask questions or put forward suggestions.
