The sunmao (榫卯) method of joinery was commonly used in ancient Chinese architecture and furniture. But when modern technology discourages many in mastering this ancient skill, Jia Jing, a junior student at Hubei Ecology Polytechnic College, offers his answer.
“It is essential to train young people in this craft,” said the 20-year-old. “Not only does it ensure the preservation of carpentry (木工) skills, but there exist delicate wooden artifacts from ancient times that machines still cannot repeat.”
Growing up in a family with a carpenter father, Jia would constantly observe his father doing woodwork and sometimes assist him. This early exposure ignited (点燃) his passion and talent for carpentry. But as a child, he couldn’t build furniture on his own. So, he conveyed this passion into building with Lego bricks at the age of 8.
“At that time, I would think before going to bed about what I would build tomorrow,” Jia recalled. “I brainstormed a framework in my mind, and the next day I would start building it.”
This hobby significantly benefited Jia’s future furniture-making skills. Before making any piece, Jia can quickly sketch a draft in his mind, which proves useful during the carving process.
When the moment arrived for Jia to head to college, he chose interior design at the suggestion of his father. Beyond his theoretical studies, Jia also signed up for school furniture-making training center. Sawing, planning, and carving wood repeatedly every day can be an extremely dull job for most young people. While other students were enjoying their college life, Jia had already learned to bear loneliness and focus on achieving excellence. “This experience not only improved my skills but also tested my character,” Jia said.
Recently, Jia’s commitment to this craft achieved a significant milestone. He was chosen as one of the candidates to compete on behalf of China at the 47th World Skills Competition in Lyon, France next year.
“If I can represent China on the global stage, I will exert all my efforts to become the winner,” Jia said.
24.Why should young people learn the sunmao method according to Jia Jing
A.It is key to making Chinese furniture. B.It is better than modern technology.
C.It exhibits traditional Chinese culture. D.It exhibits ancient carpentry wisdom.
25.How did Lego benefit Jia Jing
A.Arousing his interest in carpentry. B.Assisting his father in furniture making.
C.Improving his carpentry skills. D.Preparing him for his ideal university.
26.What did Jia sacrifice during his college time
A.His leisure time. B.His practical skills.
C.His theoretical studies. D.His original character.
27.What can be the best title of this text
A.Making furniture against technology. B.Preserving carpentry inside Lego.
C.Carving dreams in wood. D.Continuing passion on global stage.

Scanning an item at checkout is something we take for granted in this age of convenience. We can thank barcodes for that. It’s been 50 years since the beginning of this game-changing technology.
On March 31, 1971, a historic meeting took place in New York City and included executives from some of the top US companies at that time. The meeting agreed to create a system to uniquely identify every single product, calling it the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), the core of barcodes, according to El Mundo, a Spanish newspaper.
What information does a barcode contain Where the product comes from, where it has been, its price, expiration (过期时间)... you name it. The first two numbers indicate where that product has been identified (the place), then there is the number that corresponds to the manufacturing company and the rest of the numbers uniquely identify each unit that the manufacturer makes.
Barcodes don’t only identify the category of goods but also manage the number of goods. For example, if there are 10 cartons of milk and a customer takes one, it will be registered when it is scanned at the cash counter, so the store owner knows there are nine cartons left and manages stock accurately.
“Its creation allowed the first digitization in the control of the stock,” José María Bonmatí, general director of AECOC, a Spanish commercial association, told El Mundo. “The unique identification of products at a global level was the key that opened the door to retail as we know it today.”
In the past five decades, barcodes have provided many conveniences for commerce. The next generation of barcodes, such as QR codes, can hold vastly more information. “Their use, for example, can tell consumers if a product contains allergens (过敏原), if it is organic and information on its carbon footprint. Ultimately, this provides consumers with a greater level of trust and loyalty relating to the products they buy,” according to GS 1, the organization that develops and maintains the global barcodes standard.
28.What does the article tell us about barcodes
A.They were first introduced five decades ago.
B.They were developed by a Spanish executive.
C.The GTIN was the first version of a barcode.
D.They are used by some of the top companies worldwide.
29.What information can people get by scanning barcodes
A.A product’s carbon footprint.
B.A product’s marketing company.
C.The allergens contained in a product.
D.The remaining amount of a certain product in stock.
30.What is the benefit of barcodes according to José María Bonmatí
A.They help improve the quality of goods.
B.They furthered the development of retail.
C.They offer consumers a wider choice of products.
D.They save companies from having to stock products.
31.What is the attitude of GS 1
A.Concerned B.Doubt C.Critical D.Positive

Search “toxic parents”, and you’ll find more than 38, 000 posts, largely urging young adults to cut ties with their families. The idea is to safeguard one’s mental health from abusive parents. However, as a psychoanalyst (精神分析学家), I’ve seen that trend in recent years become a way to manage conflicts in the family, and I have seen the severe impacts estrangement (疏远) has on both sides of the divide. This is a self-help trend that creates much harm.
“Canceling” your parent can be seen as an extension of a cultural trend aimed at correcting imbalances in power and systemic inequality. Today’s social justice values respond to this reality, calling on us to criticize oppressive and harmful figures and to gain power for those who have been powerless. But when adult children use the most effective tool they have – themselves – to gain a sense of security and ban their parents from their lives, the roles are simply switched, and the pain only deepens.
Often, what I see in my practice are cases of family conflict mismanaged, power dynamics turned upside down rather than negotiated. I see the terrible effect of that trend: situations with no winners, only isolated humans who long to be known and feel safe in the presence of the other.
The catch is that after estrangement, adult children are not suddenly less dependent. In fact, they feel abandoned and betrayed, because in the unconscious, it doesn’t matter who is doing the leaving; the feeling that remains is “being left”. They carry the ghosts of their childhood, tackling the emotional reality that those who raised us can never truly be left behind, no matter how hard we try.
What I have found is that most of these families need repair, not permanent break-up. How can one learn how to negotiate needs, to create boundaries and to trust How can we love others, and ourselves, if not through accepting the limitations that come with being human Good relationships are the result not of a perfect level of harmony but rather of successful adjustments.
To pursue dialogue instead of estrangement will be hard and painful work. It can’t be a single project of “self-help”, because at the end of the day, real intimacy (亲密关系) is achieved by working through the injuries of the past together. In most cases of family conflict, repair is possible and preferable to estrangement – and it’s worth the work.
32.Why do young people cut ties with the family
A.To gain an independent life. B.To restore harmony in the family.
C.To protect their psychological well-being.D.To follow a tendency towards social justice.
33.What does the underlined word “catch” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Response. B.Problem. C.Operation. D.Emphasis.
34.To manage family conflict, the author agrees that young adults should________.
A.break down boundaries B.gain power within the family
C.live up to their parents’ expectations D.accept imperfection of family members
35.What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage
A.To advocate a self-help trend. B.To justify a common social value.
C.To argue against a current practice. D.To discuss a means of communication.

How Many Cups of Coffee per Day Are Too Many
From cappuccinos to cold brew, coffee is a must-have to start the day for many people. 36 However, a new study suggests too much coffee can be harmful.
This is what a recent study shows. 37 A University of South Australia study led by Elian Hypponen suggests a couple of cups to start your day probably won’t hurt — and may even be good for you. But drinking six or more cups of coffee a day can increase your risk of heart disease by up to 22%, the researchers found. A cup was defined as eight ounces of coffee.
Knowing the limits of what's good for us and what's not is necessary. 38 About one in four deaths in the United States is due to heart disease, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. That's why Elian set out to discover how much caffeine causes high blood pressure. 39
Elian says her findings suggest that sipping two to three cups per day is pretty safe and possibly beneficial. She also notes that if you're generally healthy, lots of evidence suggests that four cups per day shouldn't be harmful.
40 Even though the research says five cups of coffee is permissible, each person should know his or her own limit. If we begin having difficulty sleeping or feeling nervous, we might have reached our limit for the day.
A.Drink no more than six cups per day.
B.Over the limits and our health will pay for it.
C.Coffee is the most popular drink in the world.
D.But of course, don't forget to listen to our body.
E.The relation between them is quite complicated.
F.As we know, it is a key heart disease risk factor.
G.It sets you off on an energetic morning and prepares you for a busy day.

Yesterday I witnessed two Canadian Geese arguing 45 for a clump(草丛) of beautiful fresh grass. The clump was 46 right in the middle of them, while the two were shouting noisily, stretching their necks as long as they could to look aggressively at each other. It’s 47 to witness the “impolite” side of Canadian geese. Hence, I couldn’t help 48 my morning walk, standing still to watch these “gentlemen” quarreling. Interestingly, after a short while, a truck roared past their feast, disturbing their 49 conversation. The two geese were equally 50 by the massive “monster”, thus giving up their conversation.
Would they start quarreling again I stood still, 51 the ridiculous question and waited. Beyond my expectation, right after the truck’s passing by, the two geese immediately lost their 52 for quarreling as if they had forgotten all about what had happened. Even the two turned around and left the 53 in opposite directions as if nothing had happened. They left only me there, imagining what might have happened without the 54 .
They got along harmoniously again. Sometimes it’s not that bad to be 55 .

Jianbing is one of China’s most popular street breakfasts. Every neighborhood has its own Jianbing vendor (摊贩) serving breakfast 56 dawn through mid-morning, satisfying hungry 57 (local) on their way to work.
Contrary to 58 you might think, Jianbing is no grab-and-go street breakfast. To preserve the crispness (酥脆) of the pancake, the vendors never cook Jianbing in advance, so waiting in a line is part of the culture. But 59 (basic), Jianbing is a breakfast worth waiting for.
Jianbing has a longer history than almost any other Chinese street food. It is thought to have originated in Shandong Province during the Three Kingdoms Period, 60 military strategist Zhuge Liang had his soldiers cook food on shields (盾) 61 (hold) over the fire.
Of course, if Jianbing were that easy to make, it would have taken the world by storm long before now. Part of 62 challenge of copying the dish is that the recipe for a Jianbing differs from region to region, and even from vendor to vendor.
Many consider it 63 (possible) to make your own Jianbing without months of practice and tuition from a master. Yet a few committed foreigners have made it, who 64 (inspire) to bring Jianbing to a hungry audience after their first taste in China back in the 1980s. In the UK, twins Melissa and Oliver Fu, owners of Mei Mei’s Street Cart are bringing the joys of Jianbing first to London and now Manchester despite all the difficulty they have in 65 (perfect) their technique.

In a coastal village named Seaford, lived a courageous young woman named Amelia. Amelia was known throughout Seaford for her adventurous nature. From the moment she could walk, she would eagerly run towards the crashing waves, feeling the sand between her toes and the cool spray of the ocean mist on her face. She was a woman with a strong will and possessed a heart full of kindness. Amelia’s love for the ocean was intense, and she spent most of her days exploring the beautiful beaches and sparkling waters that surrounded her house.
One sunny morning, while Amelia was walking along the shore, she noticed a group of restless seagulls abnormally circling above the crashing waves. Their unusual calls echoed (回) through the air. Concerned for their well-being, she followed their flight pattern, her instincts guiding her toward danger.
As she approached a towering cliff, Amelia gasped in horror. On a narrow ledge (岩架), high above the violent waves, was a young dolphin trapped in a thick fishing net. Its shiny body shone under the golden rays of the sun, but its freedom was cruelly limited by the trap. With each struggle, the net tightened around its delicate body, leaving painful marks on its skin. Its tail flapped helplessly, each movement a request for help, while its desperate cries for assistance echoed through the air.
A sense of urgency filled her, pushing her forward with determination and resolve. Realizing that time was tight, Amelia knew she had to act instantly to free this innocent creature from its difficult position before it submitted to exhaustion or the force of the tides.

根据第二段““It is essential to train young people in this craft,” said the 20-year-old. “Not only does it ensure the preservation of carpentry (木工) skills, but there exist delicate wooden artifacts from ancient times that machines still cannot repeat.”(这位20岁的年轻人说:“对年轻人进行这方面的培训很重要。”“它不仅确保了木工技能的保存,而且还保留了机器无法复制的古代精美木制工艺品。”)”可知,贾静认为它展示了古老的木工智慧,所以年轻人应学习榫卯结构。故选D项。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段“But as a child, he couldn’t build furniture on his own. So, he conveyed this passion into building with Lego bricks at the age of 8.(但作为一个孩子,他不会自己做家具。所以,他在8岁的时候就把这种激情用乐高积木表达出来)”以及第四段““At that time, I would think before going to bed about what I would build tomorrow,” Jia recalled. “I brainstormed a framework in my mind, and the next day I would start building it.”(“那个时候,我会在睡觉前想明天要做什么,”贾回忆说。“我在脑海中集思广益地想出了一个框架,第二天就开始构建它。”)”和第五段“This hobby significantly benefited Jia’s future furniture-making skills.(这个爱好对他日后的家具制作技能有很大的帮助)”可知,搭建乐高提高他的木工技术。故选C项。

Beyond his theoretical studies, Jia also signed up for school furniture-making training center. Sawing, planning, and carving wood repeatedly every day can be an extremely dull job for most young people. While other students were enjoying their college life, Jia had already learned to bear loneliness and focus on achieving excellence.(当贾要上大学的时候,他在父亲的建议下选择了室内设计。 故选A项。

This early exposure ignited (点燃) his passion and talent for carpentry.(贾在一个木匠父亲的家庭长大,他经常观察父亲做木工,有时还会帮助他。这种早期的接触点燃了他对木工的热情和天赋)”以及倒数第二段“Recently, Jia’s commitment to this craft achieved a significant milestone. He was chosen as one of the candidates to compete on behalf of China at the 47th World Skills Competition in Lyon, France next year.(最近,贾的这一努力达到了一个重要的里程碑。

根据第四段“Barcodes don’t only identify the category of goods but also manage the number of goods. For example, if there are 10 cartons of milk and a customer takes one, it will be registered when it is scanned at the cash counter, so the store owner knows there are nine cartons left and manages stock accurately.(条形码不仅可以识别商品的类别,还可以管理商品的数量。例如,如果有10盒牛奶,顾客拿了一盒,在收银台扫描时就会进行登记,这样店主就知道还有9盒牛奶,并准确地管理库存)”可知,通过扫描条形码人们可以得知某种产品在库存中的剩余数量,故选D。

33.词义猜测题。根据划线单词下一句“that after estrangement, adult children are not suddenly less dependent. In fact, they feel abandoned and betrayed, because in the unconscious, it doesn’t matter who is doing the leaving; the feeling that remains is “being left”.
根据文章倒数第二段“What I have found is that most of these families need repair, not permanent break-up.(我发现,大多数这样的家庭需要修复,而不是永久破裂。)”可知,作者建议年轻人去修复家庭关系而不是疏远;再根据“How can we love others, and ourselves, if not through accepting the limitations that come with being human Good relationships are the result not of a perfect level of harmony but rather of successful adjustments.(如果不接受作为人类的局限性,我们怎么能爱别人,爱自己呢 良好的人际关系不是完美和谐的结果,而是成功调整的结果。)”
根据文章第一段“Search “toxic parents”, and you’ll find more than 38, 000 posts, largely urging young adults to cut ties with their families. The idea is to safeguard one’s mental health from abusive parents.(搜索“有毒父母”,你会发现超过38000条帖子,大部分都是敦促年轻人与家庭断绝关系。这样做是为了保护孩子的心理健康不受父母虐待。)”可知,开篇作者先提出了一个当下普遍存在的趋势,即年轻人在处理家庭冲突时,选择的是疏远家庭。再根据however之后的内容“However, as a psychoanalyst (精神分析学家), I’ve seen that trend in recent years become a way to manage conflicts in the family, and I have seen the severe impacts estrangement (疏远) has on both sides of the divide. This is a self-help trend that creates much harm.(然而,作为一名精神分析学家,我看到近年来这种趋势成为了一种管理家庭冲突的方式,我也看到了疏远对分歧双方的严重影响。这是一种会造成很多伤害的自助趋势。)”可知,作者紧接着通过转折词“however”指出这种疏远的处理方式是错误的,会带来很大的伤害。因此,作者是为了论述与开篇趋势相反的观点。故选C。

六、书面表达
67【答案】范文
Without hesitation, Amelia rushed back to the village. She gathered the villagers to join her in the rescue. Amelia led the way, carefully moving along the steep cliff edge until she reached the dolphin. As she drew closer, she noticed tears streaming out of the creature’s eyes, as if it knew its fate was in their hands. Amelia carefully freed the dolphin from the net. Then Amelia and the villagers guided it down to the waiting boat. Then they made their way back to the shore and treated the injuries of the dolphin.
As the dolphin was gently released into the calm, welcoming waters, it hesitated for a moment. Amelia approached the dolphin and gently stroked it. The dolphin touched the girl with the tip of its nose in response and made happy sounds as if to say a final thank you before diving gracefully beneath the surface. The crowd erupted in applause, their hearts filled with joy and gratitude for being witness to such a remarkable rescue. Amelia’s courage and compassion were an inspiration to all who heard her story.

C.To protect their psychological well-being. D.To follow a tendency towards social justice.

Have you ever heard of and seen Canadian geese Do you know that they 41 fresh grass and seeds
Canadian geese have a good 42 for their politeness. They always bow down to you whenever you walk by. However, I have recently found that they can sometimes be 43 to their peers, especially on occasions when they quarrel for food——yes, these 44 gentlemen do quarrel, just for something to eat
