Our youngest child eagerly entered kindergarten, while our oldest child excitedly went to college—and I felt left behind. After being very happy as a stay-at-home mother of six children, I suddenly felt stuck on a dead-end road and lacked direction. An inner anxiety troubled me that life was passing by. The road, requiring expensive education, appeared too long and difficult.
Thanks to supportive friends and family, I eventually discovered the road sign pointing to the ideal program at an excellent college, which offered a lot of student grants(助学金). Driving to my first class, I, aged 40, was eager and nervous.
School required sacrifices(牺牲): weekends for class, sleep for study, and life's luxuries(奢侈品) for tuition fees. But the rewards greatly outweighed the cost. The narrow and rocky road developed perseverance (坚持不懈) and patience, while the smooth and open road built low confidence. Along the way, I met fellow travelers of all ages and interests: a 50-year-old woman who learned photography at the munity college; a successful 62-year-old businessman who worked toward a nursing degree to serve in developing countries; an 80-year-old woman who enthusiastically started classes to learn how to surf the Internet, so she could keep up with the world.
Twelve years after starting the journey as a non-traditional student, I graduated with a doctoral degree in literature. My children have been especially proud, calling me Dr. Mom. When you hear the small, still voice asking you to do something more or different, remember you can trust your heart.

Do you know that over ten million American kids go to camp every summer 61 Back then, before the air conditioner was invented, hot city summers were uncomfortable and even unhealthy for children, so escaping to the country for a few weeks became a popular trend.
Today, kids have different reasons for making camp a part of their lives, such as:
To meet new people
Camp might give you a chance to be with people from different states, or even different countries. It's a great way to make new friends and learn about different places and cultures. Michiko, 13, put it like this: "I loved camp. I met this girl named Manny who lives in New York (I live in New Jersey) and she is cool. 62 We taught each other words. We liked to swim in the pool a lot."
To challenge yourself
63 Fresh challenges--like trying new sports, learning new crafts and games, or pushing yourself to achieve something—can be very rewarding. Take it from Arabella, 13, who told us :"I went to summer camp and I passed my swimming test! I can hardly swim, so it was a big accomplishment. 64 "
To appreciate nature
There's a great big natural world out there, and going to camp helps you learn how beautiful and important it really is. 65 Getting out into the woods or mountains can give you a better understanding of how the web of life works.
Not all the things that kids do at camp are easy.
B. She speaks Spanish and I speak Japanese.
C. I felt great afterwards.
D. It's also a great way to learn about teamwork and tolerance(包容).
E. Summer camp has been a U.S. tradition for over 150 years.
F. When you get right down to it, going to camp is all about having a good time.
G. Without trees, soil, water, and wildlife, the Earth couldn't survive.
