As a young girl, I loved sports, and I used to watch the Olympics with my dad, dreaming of being one of those athletes. I didn’t know then that my life would lead me to cycling and give me the opportunity to achieve that dream. While many people might not be deeply familiar with cycling, everyone understands the significance of the Olympics. Just being chosen for this event pushed my career to a new level.
I was most excited that my family and friends could come to watch me participate and share the experience with me, for the Olympics were taking place in Paris this time. I was a much more experienced rider than I had been in Rio and Tokyo, which helped me stay calm and better understand the race scenarios. I hadn’t seen the course yet, but the profile suggested a classic style race that would be competitive and quite technical—all aspects I enjoyed. Being able to compete in such an environment, especially with the support of my loved ones, added a significant layer of excitement and motivation.
Staying at the Olympic Village was also an amazing experience. The large food courts were shared by all, meaning I could be having breakfast with someone I admired and watched on TV. We were able to stay and relax in the village after our competition, fully feeling the village energy. It was like a small city for athletes, where we could observe how others prepared for their events and how they handled the post-competition emotions. Although the rules had changed, and we then had to leave the accommodation soon after our events, the village kept exciting and encouraging us.
At the Olympics, we represented our country or region, and riders who were our rivals finally became our teammates for the event. The team atmosphere and mutual understanding between each other were key, and I was lucky to be part of a supportive group of girls who shared the same goal.
4. What is the author’s main purpose in writing paragraph 1
A. To show the Olympic events to readers.
B. To show the role of cycling in the Olympics.
C. To show the effect of the Olympics on her life.
D. To show the love of her family for the Olympics.
5. What was the most exciting part of the Paris Olympics for the author
A. Being experienced in riding. B. Having her loved ones’ company.
C. Having more chances to be a winner. D. Being able to see the course in advance.
6. What did the author think of the Olympic Village
A. Awkward. B. Changeable.
C. Classic. D. Inspiring.
7. What does the underlined word “rivals” mean in the last paragraph
A. Friends. B. Members. C. Competitors. D. Audiences.

Bamboo farming is on the rise in Uganda. The strong and fast-growing crop is seen as having real growth possibility.
Along a 3-kilometer stretch of the River Rwizi, environment protection officers recently planted new bamboo and cleared room for last year’s survivors to grow. The River Rwizi is the most important river in western Uganda that includes the major city of Mbarara. A successful bamboo forest will prevent the river from being damaged by people, including sand miners, farmers and others whose activities have long threatened it.
“Once bamboo is established, it is almost like a net,” says Jeconious Musingwire. He is an environmental officer who is the project’s technical advisor. “The roots trap everything, including the surface runoff, and stabilize the weaknesses of the banks.”
In Uganda, bamboo can be burned for fuel in rural communities, taking pressure off decreasing forests of eucalyptus (桉树) and other natural resources. It is a strong plant that can grow almost anywhere, even in the face of natural disasters. And businesses can turn it into products ranging from furniture to toothpicks.
The Ugandan government has set a 10-year policy that calls for planting 300, 000 hectares of bamboo. Most of it will be grown on private land by 2029 as part of wider reforestation efforts. That is a high target. The Uganda Bamboo Association, the largest such group with340 members, has planted only 500 hectares. Even with growing interest in bamboo farming. officials will have to push more farmers in rural parts of Uganda to plant large areas of land with bamboo.
A single bamboo pole brings in a little less than a dollar, so farmers need to grow a lot to earn enough. Bamboo promoters are encouraging them to see a bamboo plantation as the same kind of money-making crop as coffee or tea, Banks are lending bamboo “plantation capital” money that promises ownership of large bamboo forests.
8. Why did the Ugandan officers plant new bamboo
A. To increase tourism. B. To fight natural disasters.
C. To protect a river. D. To provide a shelter for people.
9. Which word best describes bamboo
A. Weak. B. Adaptable. C. Sticky. D. Endangered.
10. What can we learn about the policy from paragraph 5
A. Its progress is ahead of schedule. B. It draws little attention.
C. Its effect is obvious. D. It is challenging.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. Bamboo Sees Growing Interest in Uganda
B. Ugandan Farmers Become Rich with Bamboo
C. Uganda Thinks Bamboo as the Most Valuable Plant
D. Bamboo Replaces Other Money-making Crops in Uganda
D
Hair health is a topic of great concern, just as a beauty master notes in a book, “Your hair’s health is a reflection of your body’s health.” There is good news that a discovery in hair growth research could pave the way for future medications. Researchers from the University of California have identified a molecule (分子) that is linked to faster hair growth. The molecule, which is found in higher levels in areas with thick hair, is shown to promote hair growth when it enters the skin.
Maksim Plikus, PhD, the scientific officer, who is also a professor in the Department of Developmental and Cell Biology at the University of California, noted that for this study, the researchers drew inspiration from “Mother Nature’s own experiment”. “Millions of people have small and large moles (色素痣) that grow long hair. Thus, the molecule that is increased in such human skin moles might hold an answer for hair stem cell (干细胞) stimulation,” he explained.
The reasons behind hair loss are not easy to understand. Hair loss is underlined by a decrease in important signaling proteins (蛋白质) inside of hair that normally stimulate hair stem cells. For common forms of hair loss, hair stem cells remain resting for a very long time, despite being complete and undamaged. One efficient strategy for fighting hair loss would be to inject signaling proteins into the skin covering the head to activate resting hair stem cells, a common way used in the medical field. Previous hair studies have recognized that such a way can prove to be very efficient, but which signaling proteins are viewed as good choices for hair stem cell stimulation in humans remains largely unknown,
The discovery of the molecule as a hair growth stimulant is the result of a decade of research. This research points to a possible solution for hair loss that physicians and patients have been searching for. While his team is excited and hopeful about the possibility of finding a treatment that will work for both men and women, Plikus stresses that additional studies are required to better understand these findings in humans.
12. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By asking. B. By quoting. C. By comparing. D. By defining.
13. Which of the following can promote hair growth
A. The rising molecules. B. The beautified head skin.
C. The enlarged moles. D. The decreasing hair stem cells.
14. What role do the signaling proteins play in hair stem cell stimulation
A. A patient. B. A viewer. C. A helper. D. A loser.
15. How does Plikus’s team feel about the research’s finding
A. It is doubtful. B. It is confusing. C. It is simple. D. It is promising.

A week after Shirley moved to her new house, she wanted to meet her new neighbors. One morning on the weekend, she prepared some cookies and went to see her first neighbor, an elderly lady named Evelyn, who lived next door.
Shirley knocked on the door, and Evelyn took her time answering the door since she was old and struggled to walk with a cane (手杖) . Shirley introduced herself and gave Evelyn the cookies. The older woman’s face lit up. “Oh, you’re such a sweetheart!” She said with a smile. “Please come in! ”
As Shirley entered the house, she noticed Evelyn had difficulty moving around. The old woman could hardly lift the tea kettle (水壶) by herself, so Shirley helped her in making tea, and when they were done, they chatted happily while having tea and cookies together.
“Your house is beautiful, Evelyn,” Shirley said as she looked around Evelyn’s small living room, which had a wall lined with beautiful photos. “Do you mind if I ask who these people in the picture with you are ” she asked, pointing to a wall picture.
“Oh, they are my husband and daughter, darling,” Evelyn explained. “After my loving husband died and my daughter moved out for working in another city, it’s just me, living alone in the house.” During their tea chat, Shirley realized it was hard for Evelyn to clean the house. 【47题答案】
【答案】One morning, Shirley didn’t see Evelyn sitting on her balcony as she usually did. Shirley decided to drop in on Evelyn. She knocked on Evelyn’s door, but she did not answer. Where had she gone Shirley couldn’t help but wonder what if something happened to her with her poor physical condition. Not quitting, she kept waiting outside the door for a while. She then heard Evelyn’s weak voice through the door. Without any delay, Shirley managed to open the door. What shocked her was that Evelyn was lying on the ground, struggling to rise to her feet. Shirley rushed to get her up from ground. Luckily, Evelyn didn’t hurt seriously when she could offer help.
After that day, out of concern, Shirley decided to do something for Evelyn. She came to visit Evelyn again, offering to help Evelyn buy milk every day. Besides, she also decided to help Evelyn around the house on weekends. The old woman was in tears and deeply grateful to Shirley for that. Since then, Shirley had been delivering milk to Evelyn’s house every day, as she had promised. Sometimes, she would even get Evelyn groceries, and the old woman’s smile upon receiving them made Shirley’s day. With time, Shirley and Evelyn became close friends. Evelyn no longer felt lonely and helpless.
