Unit 3 The art of painting:Extended reading(教学设计)
I. Learning objectives
By the end of the period, students will be able to:
1. get the main idea of each paragraph according to topic sentences;
2. write a summary about the Qingming Scroll after finding out some details;
3. have a critical and creative thinking about the way the museum does;
4. understand the author’s writing purpose and get some enlightenment from the painting.

IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
T shows Zhang Zeduan’s Qingming Scroll and asks some questions.
T: Today I’d like to show you something special. Do you know its name What do you want to know about this masterwork

Step 2 Global reading
T asks Ss to look through the text as quickly as they can and answer these questions:
(1) What’s the genre of the text An introductory essay.
(2) How does the author develop the essay
From the general introduction about the Qingming Scroll to some details about the painting, the author makes readers know about the painting step by step.
T: Please read Paragraph 1, can you use one sentence to introduce the Qingming Scroll
Possible answer: Housed in the Palace Museum in Beijing and painted on a five-meter-long silk scroll, Qingming Scroll, as a masterwork of Chinese art, described people’s lives in Bianjing in the 12th century.

Step 3 Detailed reading
1. T asks students to read the paragraphs about details carefully and answer some questions.
(1) Paragraph 2:
What’s the painting about
It’s about people’s lives in Bianjing in the 12th century, including scenes of rural life, the riverbanks, the splendid central bridge and life inside the city.
(2) Paragraph 3:
What materials did Zhang Zeduan use He used ink on silk.
What enables Zhang to show an enormous amount of detail His well-developed ability, as well as the scroll’s ambitious size.
(3) Paragraph 4:
What message does Zhang Zeduan want to get across
The painting reveals a great deal about life during the Northern Song Dynasty. It tells us about customs, clothing, transportation methods, business practices and architecture styles of that time. However, on closer inspection, it also exposes serious political and social problems.

Step 4 Writing a summary
1. T divides Ss into groups and asks them to write a summary of the essay.
2. T chooses two groups to present their summaries and then the teacher offers one possible version.

Step 5 Critical & creative thinking
T asks students to read the last paragraph and think about these questions:
1. The original scroll is extremely delicate so it is not often displayed to the public. What do you think of the way the museum does and why
2. Museums want to protect some masterpieces from damage, but the public wish to have more access to them. How can we deal this issue Have a group discussion and make a list of possible measures.

Step 6 Further reading
T asks students to have a discussion about these two questions in groups:
1. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this essay
Possible answer: The author wants to convey the message to readers that the Qingming Scroll not only occupies an important position in the history of Chinese paintings due to the artist’s well-developed ability, but also has extremely high historical and realistic value because of its in-depth and detailed description of life in China in the 12th century. The author wants to make readers be proud of the extensive, profound history and culture of our country, so as to enhance our national pride and cultural confidence.
2. What can we learn from Zhang Zeduan’s details showed in the painting
Possible answer: It is Zhang’s precise brushwork that shows so many details in the painting, contributing to such a masterpiece. Therefore, we should also attach great importance to details.
