People were surprised to see a group of Yangtze finless porpoises(江豚)swimming in the Yangtze River on March 23, 2022. They jumped, hunted and played. The Yangtze finless porpoises have been on the list of animals in danger since 2013. In 2020, the government put a 10-year fishing ban(禁令)in place. Now the government’s environmental protection action is working.
Ocean is Singing
Ecuador(厄瓜多尔)takes action to protect the ocean. It provides “underwater highway” which helps animals travel in protected waters. And the government has also built a new reserve. The reserve is cut into two parts. If people catch fish in one part of the reserve, no fishing will be allowed(允许)in the other. That means “long line” fishing will never be allowed in the reserve.
The Coldest Post Office is Hiring
Four people are needed to work at the world’s coldest post office—Penguin(企鹅)Post Office. It is in Antarctica(南极洲). The four people each have their own jobs, but they work together to help the tourists who come by boat. They should also watch wildlife, including counting penguins and collecting environmental information.

Do you love travelling to natural places Let’s begin our exploration in Shennongjia, a place as beautiful as Zhalong.
Thousands of years ago, in the south of ancient China, there lived Shennong, a man who had an ox (牛) head and human body. Seeing that local people were suffering from disease, he built houses on a high mountain to store hundreds of medical plants. To remember him, people named the place Shennongjia.
The legend (传说) makes Shennongjia in Hubei a great place for tourists. Travelling there is a special experience, as you can see the beauty of the four seasons from different heights. “When the bottom of the mountain is summer, the top is spring and while the foothill is autumn, the top is covered with ice,” local people say about the special climate of Shennongjia.
Shennongjia is also home to 5,000 kinds of animals and plants. Many animals in danger live there, such as the golden monkey, the clouded leopard and the Asian black bear.
One interesting and mysterious thing about Shennongjia is its legend of wild men. Some people once said that they saw big prints or big-foot creatures. Yet so far, scientists haven’t proved (证明) it is true and some say they are just bears.
The beautiful place has recently received a new title. On July 17, 2016, Shennongjia Forestry District was added to United Nations World Heritage List as a natural site.

The six Chinese astronauts from the Shenzhou-l4 and Shenzhou-15 missions marked a historic moment on 30 November as they met inside the country’s Tiangong space station. It was the first time that six Chinese were in a space station at the same time and the first in-orbit (轨道内的) gathering of two Chinese crews (乘组).
The Shenzhou-15 crew set out on the journey to the Tiangong station on the night of 29 November from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China’s Gobi Desert. They rode a spaceship that was lifted into space by a Long March 2F rocket. At 7:33 a.m. (Beijing Time), the Shenzhou-14 astronauts opened the door of their “space home” to welcome the Shenzhou-15 astronauts. The six then took a group photo to record the great moment.
According to the China Manned Space Agency, the two crews stayed together for about five days, and then the Shenzhou-14 crew, who had been in orbit for nearly half a year, returned to a landing site in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region (内蒙古自治区着陆点). The Shenzhou-15 astronauts will stay in orbit for six months to do a lot of work, such as carrying out spacewalks to mount equipment (安装设备) outside the station, and doing scientific experiments (实验).
Following the arrival (到达) of the Shenzhou-15 spaceship, the Tiangong space station has grown much. Tiangong is expected to operate in orbit for about 10 years and will be open to foreign astronauts in the near future, according to space officials. It is the 10th crewed space station in the world and one of the two operating stations, along with the International Space Station.

Happy Rain on a Spring Night
Good rain knows its time right;
It will fall when comes spring.
With wind it steals in night;
Mute, it moistens each thing.
O’er wild lanes dark cloud spreads;
In boat a lantern looms.
Dawn sees saturated reds;
The town’s heavy with blooms.
—Translated by Xu Yuanchong
This famous poem, was written by Du Fu(712-770, Tang Dynasty)when he was living in Chengdu. Sometimes, he went to farm in the field. The poem shows his care for farmers.
The very first word, “Good”, shows Du’s joy and love for the spring rain. The rain is good because it “knows” the right time to come. Here Du uses personification(拟人), as if the rains were smart enough to come in time for the farmer’s busy season.
The rain comes during the night without making any noise. Unlike the summer storms, the quiet spring rain finishes its task without being known.
Next, Du describes a peaceful scene to us. In the night sky, the clouds look dark and heavy. It’s a sign that there will be enough rain during the night. The light from the riverboat makes the dark scene a bit livelier.
Finally, he thinks, the city of Chengdu will become beautiful when all of the flowers bloom after the rain.

This summer, the temperatures were very high in Europe. Firefighters fought against hundreds of wildfires in many European countries. And hundreds of people died because of the heat wave.
However, according to a survey, only about 20% of homes in Europe have air conditioners (空调), compared to 90% in the US. Why is that
First, usually it isn’t very hot in Europe in summer because of its location. Europe is located farther north than the US, making the weather cooler. The average July high in London is 24℃, which is 10 degrees cooler than the average July high in New York.
Second, there are many old houses in Europe. More than half of the houses in Europe were built in the last century. The weather then was not as hot as it is nowadays. Naturally, air conditioners were unnecessary. What’s more, those old houses’ structure and material make it harder and more expensive to install (安装) air conditioners. Installing an air conditioner could cost more than the air conditioner itself.
As for other reasons, they can be very personal. Some people think air conditioners make them sick, so they don’t accept air conditioners. Some think using air conditioners produces much greenhouse gas. It is bad for the environment and makes the weather even hotter!
______ With higher and higher temperatures, more and more Europeans are considering installing air conditioners these days.
21.According to this passage, if there are about 8.9 million people living in London, then how many people may live in homes with air conditioners
A.593,000. B.1,780,000. C.2,670,000. D.8,010,000.
22.Which of the following CANNOT explain why there are fewer air conditioners in Europe
A.It isn’t so hot because of its location.
B.Many houses were built a long time ago.
C.The air conditioners in Europe are too expensive.
D.Some people there just don’t like air conditioners for different reasons!
23.According to Paragraph 4, which of the following statements is NOT true
A.Many houses in Europe were built in the 20th century.
B.The weather in the 20th century is hotter than that in the 21st century.
C.The air conditioner may not be as expensive as the cost of installing it in an old house.
D.It is hard to put in air conditioners in an old house because of its structure and material.
24.Which sentence is most likely to be put in the blank of the last paragraph
A.Europeans are just fine with the heat in summer.
B.But things will probably change in the coming years.
C.Because of all these reasons above, Europeans may just have to stand the heat all along.
D.No matter how hot it gets, Europeans have their ways to get through without air conditions.
It’s winter time. According to the Chinese lunar calendar (农历), November, December, January and February are winter months. They include six solar terms: lidong, xiaoxue, daxue, dongzhi, xiaohan and dahan.
Lidong (Nov 7-8) is the start of winter. After lidong, most parts of the country are very cold. On this day, after a year of hard work, people are happy to take a break and spend some time with family. The northern part of China celebrates lidong as the “Small Spring Festival”. People have dumplings and eat mutton (羊肉) soup.
Xiaoxue (Nov 22-23) and daxue (Dec 6-8) come after lidong. During xiaoxue, northern China can snow and temperatures slowly fall below 0℃. Daxue means even more snow and bigger temperature drops.
When dongzhi (Dec 21-23) comes, it brings shortest days of the year and the longest nights. Many places around the country can be cold yet. Ancient (古代的) Chinese would often start counting “nine cold periods” (数九寒天) from dongzhi. Every cold period (一段时间) has nine days. They believed that after 81 cold days, spring would arrive.
Xiaohan (Jan 4-6) usually brings the low temperatures of the year. There may be high winds and snow.
Finally, during dahan (Jan 19-21), the snowy weather fills the fields with snow. All Chinese are ready to welcome the Chinese New Year after dahan. Spring Festival, China’s most important festival, falls at this time. After that, a new round of solar terms will start.

On October 16, 2021, NASA (美国国家航天局) sent a special spacecraft called Lucy into space. Lucy will take a 12-year trip to learn about a group of asteroids (小行星) known as the Trojans. Scientists believe they will provide information on the beginning of the solar system (太阳系).
Asteroids are large rock-like chunks of material (物质). Most of them are found in the asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter (木星). One of the asteroids that Lucy will study lies in the asteroid belt. But the other seven asteroids are very far away from Jupiter. They follow the same path that Jupiter takes around the Sun. Some (leading Trojans) travel ahead of Jupiter, and others (trailing g Trojans) behind it.
In 2025, Lucy will fly near the first asteroid named Donaldjohanson. To get there, Lucy must first go around the Earth twice. It will use the Earth’s gravity (引力) like a slingshot (弹弓) to send it out through the asteroids belt. From there, Lucy will continue on to visit a group of five leading Trojans. It will study these asteroids in 2027 and 2028. Around 2030, it will make another re tum trip around the Earth. The final trip will send it back out to the far side of the Sun by 2033 to study two trailing Trojans that move around the Sun behind Jupiter.
Lucy uses two large 10-side solar panels to get more or less energy. The trip will be more than 6.3 million kilometers long. Lucy will study these asteroids as it flies past them, sending pictures and other information back to NASA.

Of the many famous French foods, crepes (可丽饼) are among the most popular. Different types of crepes are prepared around the world. Let’s look at where these delicious French foods came from and their influence on food culture.
As one story goes, a thirteenth -century housewife in Brittany, France, carelessly dropped some porridge (粥) onto a hot cooking stone in her kitchen. The lucky result was a flat, thin pancake that was made of wheat. It later became the key ingredient in traditional crepes. According to another story, crepes date back to the fifth century. The Roman pope (教皇) offered them to French visitors at that time.
The word “cerepe” comes from the Latin word “crispa ”, which means “curled (弯曲的)”. The food can be served in many different ways. Sweet crepes can include fruit, chocolate or cream. When they are served as part of a light lunch or a dinner meal, they may include ingredients such as meat, cheese or vegetables. Usually, crepes either appear in a half-moon or triangle shape, or rolled up like a newspaper.
Food and culture go hand in hand. ▲
The best crepes should have a smooth taste. To produce smooth crepes, the batter (面糊) must be very thin and light. Even with the smoothest batter, the first crepe out of the pan is usually not a success, so it is traditionally offered to the dog or the cat raised by a family. Since crepes come from France, French people have a special holiday just to celebrate this food. The Day of the Crepes falls on February 2. On the day of the holiday, one tradition is to throw a crepe and catch it in the pan held in your right hand while holding a gold coin in your left hand. If you succeed, you will have good luck all ear round!

Do you think of white when someone talks about a polar bear In fact, the polar bear does not have white fur. It just seems to be white when the sun shines on ice. Polar bears have a very good sense of smell. It helps them find food. During summer, polar bears sleep longer, because they are able to find their food more easily at night. Usually, after a meal, polar bears have a short sleep. A polar bear can have 2-3 babies at a time. They live with their mothers until they are about two and a half years old.
However, polar bears will die out soon because of people. There are only 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears in the world. Those polar bears left are trying to survive (生存) today. The number of them is becoming smaller and smaller because of the loss of sea ice—polar bears mostly live in the sea ice, not the land ice. This is happening because of global warming. Besides, they also have to face pollution, hunting and so on.
Some people don’t care, but other people want to save tigers, fight for giant pandas and save polar bears. Join them and try to make the world a better place for those beautiful and lovely animals.

Honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree Animals can’t talk but can they lie in other ways
Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees(黑猩猩), behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends(假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. They are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, dig the food, and hide it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner’s hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share their food.
As children, many of us learn the saying “You can’t fool Mother Nature.” But maybe you can’t trust her, either.
62.A plover protects its young from a predator by ________.
A.getting closer to its young B.driving away the adult predator

Nature’s warnings
When the sky suddenly turns dark and the wind is strong, watch out! A dangerous storm might be coming. Storms are frightening. Watch for flashes of lightning. Listen for thunder. If nature sends these warnings, don’t wait for rain. Act right away to keep safe.
Safety Steps
At the first flash of lightning, quickly get inside a building or a car. Do not go into a shed for protection. It is not closed like a building, so it is not safe.
Even after you are indoors, be careful. It is not smart to go near doors and windows. They can blow in or break. A room with no windows is the safest place to be. Do not wash your hands during a storm. Do not use anything that runs on electricity, either. Water and electrical lines are like roads for lightning. Even if you really want to play computer games, don’t! It is better to be bored than to risk getting hurt. Try reading a book instead. Reading is more fun than playing computer games.
If you can’t get to somewhere safe, stay out in the open. You may feel safe under a tree, but that is not a good place to be. Lightning is pulling toward tall poles and trees. Stay down in an open space and cover your ears to protect them. Loud thunder can damage your hearing.
Lightning Strikes
Lightning does not strike people very often. It is not likely that you will ever see that happen. If you do, call 120. Only trained emergency workers should care for a person who has been hit by lighting.
If you follow these rules, you should stay safe during a storm.
66.From Paragraph 1, we learn that ________.
A.storms are frightening and harmful
B.storms often come without warnings
C.people should wait and watch lightning
D.people should take action after the storm
67.The underlined word “It” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.

Nowadays, more and more people realize the importance of having a healthy eating habit. As we know, the daily food we eat affects us in different ways. Sometimes, people are not clear about what kind of food is healthy or not. The USDA has prepared a food guide (指南) to help people learn about which kind of food is the healthiest to eat. The food guide describes six main food groups: meat (like fish and chicken), dairy (like milk and cheese), grains (like bread and rice), fruit, and vegetables. The last group is fats and sweets. Though this guide was from the US government, it is also very useful for people in other countries.
The result of the study shows that too much animal fat does harm to our health. For example, in the USA, people eat a lot of meat and only a small amount of grains, fruit and vegetables. As a result, they have a high rate (率) of cancer (癌症) and heart disease. Japanese people eat large amounts of grains and very little meat. The Japanese live longer than anyone else in the world. However, when Japanese people move to the US, the rate of heart disease and cancer rises as their eating habit changes. And as hamburgers and other high-fat foods become popular in Japan, the rate of heart disease and cancer is rising there as well. People are also eating more meat and dairy food in other countries, in which the disease rate is rising along with the change of the way people eat. Doctors suggest people eat more grains, fruit and vegetables and less meat and dairy food. It is important for children to eat healthily as well as their parents. When parents have poor eating habits, their children usually do, too. After all, children eat the same way as their parents. When parents eat healthy food, the children will learn to enjoy it, too. Then they will develop good eating habits easily.
