Vasco da Gama, a Portuguese navigator, was one of the leading figures in the history of sea exploration. His greatest contribution was the discovery of the sea route linking Europe and Asia, which gave a huge boost to the economy of his country. This route
was important because of the spice trade, which was driving Europe’s economy at the time. By discovering the spice trade route, da Gama ensured his country would dominate the European markets for decades. Between 1497 and 1650, there were
more than 1,000 departures of ships at Lisbon. These fleets brought back spices, mainly black pepper, as well as other products which were new to Europe. Vasco da Gama’s success not only benefited his country, but also inspired many other countries
in Europe to embark on their own voyages of discovery.
