Florence Nightingale, often called “the Lady with the Lamp”, was a caring nurse and a leader. Although her parents were from England, Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 in Italy while they were traveling. Growing up in a wealthy family, Florence Nightingale was home-schooled by her father and expected to get married at a young age. However, Nightingale believed she received a “calling” from God to help the poor and the sick. Despite the initial disapproval, her father eventually allowed her to go to Germany and then Paris to study. By the time she was 33, Nightingale was already making a name for herself in the nursing community.
When the Crimean War began in 1854 the British, with the lack of medical supplies, overcrowding, and dirty conditions, were unprepared to deal with a large number of sick and injured soldiers. The Secretary of War, Sidney Herbert asked Nightingale to manage a group of nurses that would go to treat the wounded soldiers. When they got there, the doctors were unwelcoming because they did not want to work with female nurses.
However, as the number of patients increased, the doctors needed their help. The nurses brought supplies, nutritious food and cleanliness to the military hospital. Nightingale was known for carrying a lamp and checking on the soldiers at night, so they gave her the nickname “the Lady with the Lamp”. Within six months, Nightingale and her team transformed the hospital, and the death rate went down significantly because of their work.
When Nightingale returned from the war, she continued to improve the conditions of hospitals. She wrote 150 books, pamphlets (小册子), and reports on health-related issues. In her later years, often bedridden from illness, she continued to advocate for safe nursing practices until her death. Although Florence Nightingale died on August 13th, 1910, at the age of 90, her legacy continues.

B. Because they were unwilling to work with female nurses.
C. Because there were enough doctors for treating the wounded soldiers.
D. Because they didn’t believe the nurses could help the wounded soldiers.
6. Why did Nightingale get the nickname “the Lady with the Lamp”
A. She liked taking a lamp with her everywhere.
B. She often prepared food at night with a lamp.
C. She usually borrowed lamps from the military hospital.

7. Which words can best describe Nightingale

Experts believe that earthquakes may become more closer and stronger together as a result of climate change. The melting of glaciers is speeding up due to global warming. The land that was beneath the melted glacier water rises when it runs off land and into the sea.
One of the most mysterious (神秘的) and terrible natural disasters is the earthquake. While experts can prepare when the major ones will strike, smaller ones can strike seemingly at any time, affecting entire cities and causing smaller disasters like fires, landslides and tsunamis.
An upcoming rise in sea level along with glacier melting may make future earthquakes more frequent, according to John Cassidy, a seismologist. The risk of earthquakes caused by glacial retreat (后退) is less than that of which may be related to rising sea levels. Increase in sea level results in an increase in underwater pressure on the seabed and therefore on the fault (断层) lines near the shore.
According to researchers, many earthquakes that are expected to occur soon near San Francisco and Los Angeles still have late earthquake cycles. The pause in sea level rise could take up to a thousand years, even in the event that we immediately ceased using greenhouse gases. There is no quick fix, however. Because we have been worsening the environment for many decades, it will take many years of efforts to solve it.
Cassidy stressed that the effects of climate change will increase their risk when earthquakes occur. As sea levels rise, earthquake-caused tsunamis will spread farther inland. Increased rainfall brought on by warmer waters will enhance the possibility of landslides caused by earthquakes. “It’s an important topic, and one that I’m sure we’ll see a lot of information coming out on in the coming months and years if we continue our climate warming,” he said.
8. What is the result of glacier melting according to paragraph 1
A. New glaciers will appear. B. Climate change comes to an end.
C. The land beneath is going up. D. There will be fewer fires occurring.
9. What factor might contribute more to earthquake frequency according to John Cassidy
A. Glaciers’ retreat. B. Underground water movement.
C. Increased rainfall. D. Rising sea levels.
10. What does the underlined phrase “quick fix” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Good result. B. Easy solution. C. Big decision. D. Perfect reason.
11. What is John Cassidy’s attitude to the earthquakes in the future
A. Unclear. B. Uninterested. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.
D
In addition to applying for a traditional guide dog, the visually impaired (有视觉障碍的) people will soon have another option to help with their daily life — a robot guide dog.
About the size of an English Bulldog but a bit wider, the six-legged robot guide dog from Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Mechanical Engineering can navigate (导航) users to destinations without running into barriers. It also has voice interaction functions and can recognize traffic light signals. With cameras, sensors, and AI technology, the robot dog can see, listen, and speak with users on daily journeys outside and be a companion at home.
Professor Gao Feng, the head of the research team at SJTU, points out that with six legs, the robot guide dog can walk smoothly with high stability. “Even if three legs are raised, the structure still has three points of contact with the ground, creating a very stable base.” Gao said. He adds that operators can use a cane (手杖) to control the walking and running speed of the robot.
In China, there are currently about 17.31 million visually impaired people, yet only around 400 guide dogs are available due to high training costs. People have to wait for a long time after applying for one. Unlike traditional dogs, the production of robot guide dogs could be scaled, especially in a major manufacturing center like China. “It's a bit like cars. We can mass-produce them in the same way as cars so that it will become more affordable,” Gao said. “This could be a huge market because tens of millions of people might need guide dogs.”
Li Fei, among the visually impaired people participating in the field test, believes such high technology will likely change their lives soon. “The research teams are thoughtful and are continuously making improvements,” Li said. “The robot dog is electronic, making it easier to get into public places than traditional guide dogs, I will probably try the robot guide dog when it becomes available. They can be precise and reliable as they seldom make subjective mistakes.”
12. What do we know about the robot guide dog
A. It is smaller than an English Bulldog. B. It can identify traffic light signals.
C. It relies on Al technologies to move. D. It can interact with other robot guide dogs.
13. Why does the robot guide dog have six legs
A. To walk more stably. B. To support heavier loads.
C To better control its speed. D. To quickly deal with urgency.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The potential market for robot guide dogs.
B. The high cost of training traditional guide dogs.
C. The difficulty of applying for a robot guide dog.
D. The standard of mass-producing robot guide dogs.
15. What can we infer about the robot guide dog according to Li Fei
A. It has been widely available to the public.
B. It needs further improvement in accuracy.
C. It will benefit visually impaired people a lot.
D. It will replace traditional guide dogs in the future.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I sat in my parents’ car. Mom had insisted I go with her to pick up Dad from work. Across from Dad’s office is a bike store. That was the day my eleven-year-old eyes first saw the purple BMX Mongoose bike. From that day on, all I could think about was that bike. I even drew pictures of the bike in class. Every evening afterward, at five thirty, I eagerly went along with Mom to get Dad.
And every day I told my parents, “I want that bike!” But they disagreed and replied that I had already had a perfectly good bike at home. I’d argue it was old and ugly, thinking that my happiness depended on that purple bike. Days later, I found the store had sold that bike. I knew I’d never be happy again.
A week later, returning home from school, I tripped over something. Lying in the weeds near a river and some wooded lots, was a bike — the exact bike from the store. “Hey, whose bike is this ” I shouted, scanning the area. No one replied, and there was no one in sight. Maybe its owner didn’t want it any longer. I couldn’t leave it lying in the weeds. So I took it home and hid it behind the garage. Every day after school, I sat there, admiring it. But I didn’t feel like riding and didn’t feel as happy as I had thought. Thinking about the bike made my stomach tighten and uncomfortable.
A few days later, during lunch at school, my friend said, “Did you hear about Tyler, in the other fifth-grade class He lost his new purple BMX Mongoose bike he had just gotten for his birthday. He left it by a river while playing in the woods. It got dark, and he couldn’t find it.”
“I’d never go off and leave a new bike like that. He doesn’t deserve to have that bike,” I replied. My friend added, “Kids say he’s nice. And they say Tyler is upset because his dad worked overtime to buy the bike for him.” For the rest of the day, I couldn’t stop thinking about Tyler.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

After school, I returned home and dragged to my room. The guilt of keeping Tyler's bike hidden behind the garage weighed heavily on me. I couldn't enjoy having the bike while knowing that it rightfully belonged to someone else. I wanted to make things right. So I went to my mother and told her what had happened. My mother smiled and tapped me on the shoulder, gently saying, “I believe you have known what you should do to the bike.”
“I know Tyler’s house,” Mom said. “I’ll drive you there.” My heart raced with a mix of nervousness and determination. I walked up to knock the door. “Hey Tyler, I'm really sorry that I hid it and caused you trouble.” To my great surprise, he did not blame. What I saw was a smile slowly spread across his face. I knew exactly what that smile meant -- forgiveness for me. From that day on, the purple BMX Mongoose bike was no longer important to me. What mattered was the friendship I had formed with Tyler, which also taught me the important values like honesty.
