“Is there going to be a flood ” asked Daniel. He looked nervously at his dad and mom. They both looked worried. Dad was completely wet and dirty. He and some other men in town had spent the morning piling bags of sand on top of the levee (防洪堤) along the river. For years the levee had kept the Mississippi from flooding its banks. After three straight days of rain, though, the water grew higher and higher. If the levee broke, Daniel’s neighborhood would be flooded for sure.
“We’ll be fine,” Dad placed a reassuring hand on Daniel’s shoulder. Outside, lightning flashed, followed by distant thunder. “Just in case,” said Dad. “I think we should start moving some things to Uncle Mike’s house.” Uncle Mike lived farther away from the river on higher ground. “And we’ll take everything we need to cook and eat upstairs,” he said, “like camping out in our own house.”
By nightfall, everything the family needed had been moved upstairs. Dad had taken their new couch and TV to Uncle Mike’s. Daniel helped his dad tie a fishing boat to the front (门廊). “Just in case,” said Dad.
Lying in bed that night, Daniel tossed and turned. He could hear the heavy rain beating on the roof. “Everything will be all right,” he said to himself just before falling asleep.
Several hours later, the sound of sirens (警报器) woke Daniel from a sound sleep. He sat straight up in bed, his heart pounding. In rushed Mom ,“Get dressed, Daniel! The levee just broke! We’ re leaving. We have no other choice.”
A few minutes later they all got into the fishing boat, leaving behind just about everything they owned. Daniel asked, “We’re going to lose everything, aren’t we ”
“No, not everything”, said Mom, pulling him close. We’ll always have each other.”

In the early part of his life, Seiichi Sano was a busy business owner. Later in life, he took on other difficult activities. At the age of 80, he climbed Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain. Soon after, he started surfing.
Sano turned 90 this year. After being recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest male to surf, he’s considering trying other activities. “Maybe I’ll try bouldering,” he said, suggesting he might do it first in a gym. “Outside it might be a bit dangerous.”
But maybe he will just stick with what he knows. “I think it would be interesting to surf until I’m 100,” Sano said. “I think I can take better care of myself when I have goals like this. Even now, I take better care of myself than I did before.”
Sano said he got the idea to try surfing from a worker at his local bank. The man’s skin was always dark but healthy. He did not look like a usual banker. His secret, he said, was surfing. So Sano found a teacher.
“I don’t consider myself an old man” he said in his wet suit, board standing next to him. “I have never thought of myself as an old persona. I always feel that I can still move forward. I can still do it. I can still enjoy it.”
Sano joined hundreds of other surfers recently at Enoshima. All the surfers were younger, of course. Several young students who also worked with Sano’s surf teacher, 46-year-old Kazuto Shimizu, talked about Sano.
“To be honest, I was surprised by his age,” said Shimizu. “I was most worried that he would get injured. I did not know how fit he was, physically.”
Sano still runs a business that supplies wood to building companies. He works 9-to-5 at the job. Surfing reduces tension for him.
8. What made Sano get a Guinness World Record for surfing
A. His age. B. His wonderful skill. C. His fast speed. D. His competition result.
9. What is the reason for Sano’s beginning surfing

A. Creative. B. Adventurous. C. Careful. D. Generous.
11. What do we know about Shimizu
A. He has difficulty training Sano. B. He prefers to teach young people.

Susan Ringwood greets all guests with a simple invitation: to join her in swimming in cold water in the swimming pool. Her offer isn’t limited to the summer months, either. Ringwood and her husband Gary swim in cold water in the swimming pool all year round. “To me, it’s not just about swimming. It’s a unique experience,” she says.
Ringwood simply calls her hobby “swimming”, but some winter fans have begun to promote cold-water swimming as a treatment to a variety of diseases.
While cold-water swimming is a new found passion, scientists say that there’s not much evidence supporting the claims of these health benefits. Nor is the activity without risk. “Extreme temperature changes can potentially cause heart attacks, even death,” says Francois Haman, a scientist at the University of Ottawa in Canada.
When your body meets cold water, it can be shocking. Scientists call this the “cold shock” response (反应). When your skin senses the freezing water, it causes you to take a quick deep breath for air and your heart rate to rise quickly to a very high level, which leads to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure.
Haman says that being in cold water is more dangerous than in cold air. Water conducts heat much more effectively than air, meaning that it can draw the heat from your body more quickly and efficiently. For those new to the sport, Haman suggests starting slowly, getting used to colder water during the fall, especially paying attention to safety.
According to supporters, cold-water swimming can improve health and immunity (免疫力), and help relieve pain. But while there is some previous scientific research to back up these claims, Denis Blondin, a professor at the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec, says that many of these studies included only a small number of people taking part in survey who were mainly young men from European countries, which limits what scientists can say more broadly and in other populations.
12. Why does the author tell Ringwood’s story
A. To attract visitors to swimming. B. To call on guests to join Ringwood.
C. To stress the benefits of swimming. D. To introduce the topic of cold-water swimming.
13. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The “cold shock” response isn’t uncommon.
B. Swimming in cold water can be a danger for some reason.
C. Heart rate and blood pressure tend to increase in winter.
D. Some preparations can be made before a cold-water swim.
14. What might Haman agree with according to the text
A. The health benefits of cold-water swimming should be showed.
B. Extreme temperature changes are dangerous but not deadly.
C. Staying in cold air is less dangerous than in cold water.
D. Cold-water swimming isn’t suitable for those new to the sport.
15. What is Blondin’s attitude to previous research
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Supportive. D. Uncertain.

Recently I graduated from high school, and as a gift I received a huge hunch of flowers, 40 to be exact! I had so many that I didn't know what to do with them. The next weekend my niece and nephew, Sue and Mike, aged 6 and 7, came and suddenly I had an idea. I might let them give out these flowers to people they met on the street, and in this way they could learn how to be friendly to others. So I told them about my plan and explained that these flowers would make people feel happy and smile. They loved the idea and were eager to have a try. So at once we took every single flower and tied a smile card to it. We then went to the street with the flowers.
The first flower went to a policeman. As soon as she saw the policeman, my niece ran up to him and handed him a flower. His smile was so big, but hers was even bigger!
In no time, we neared the end of our flowers. It was lunch time and we went to Subway for lunch. There the kids gave a flower to the waitress, who was really excited to receive the flower. As we were eating our lunch, the waitress came up to the kids with two big chocolate cookies! She said the chocolate cookies were for them and that she really liked the flower! As they ate the cookies, my niece and nephew looked at me with the biggest smiles I had ever seen.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

About five miles from downtown, Green Village is surrounded by green fields and thick forests. The villagers are friendly and they always give visitors an enthusiastic welcome. We're going to spend two hours exploring the local museum, which will be an opportunity to learn about the long history of the village. After that, we'll be free to move around in the village. We plan to meet at the school gate at 9 a. m. this Saturday and then go there by bus. We will come back in the afternoon.
If you'd like to join us, please email me soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】With just one flower left, I said it should be given to the person who needed it most. Just then, my nephew caught sight of an old woman in a wheelchair nearby. “I think she’s the very person for the flower. She lives a hard life because of bad health. She needs smiles most,” said my nephew. With these words, my nephew, followed by my niece, took the flower up to her. You can imagine how happy the old woman looked! She smiled, and gave each of the kids a big kiss.
It turned out to be a great day for us. We spread a lot of smiles by giving out flowers, and received a lot of smiles in return. The flowers not only made us feel good about ourselves, but also made 40 other people feel happy. I feel there is nothing more enjoyable than being friendly to people. Meanwhile, the kids learned an important lesson in the process. In fact, they can’t wait until next time they have such a chance again. They want to give out more flowers!
