“Out to the pig house, ” replied Mrs Arable. “Some pigs were born last night. ”
“I don’t see why he needs an ax, ” said Fern, who was only eight.
“Well, ” said her mother, “one of the pigs is too small and weak, and it will never make it. So your father has decided to do away with it. ”

Poems from Tang are very famous in China’s history. Today, I’d like to recommend Song of Autumn, one of the poems by Liu Yuxi, a famous poet and writer in the mid Tang dynasty.
Just as shown in the first line of the poem, most ancient poets liked to describe autumn as a sad time, but in this poem the season appears differently. In Liu’s eyes, autumn, full of life and hope, is even better than spring morning. He describes the bright scene of a crane riding the clouds and flying into the blue sky.
With his poems paying special attention to expressing personal feelings, as well as the daily life of common people, Liu wrote poems with beautiful music-like words. You may feel it in this poem. Though being translated thoughtfully by experienced XuYuanchong, the poem still reads not so beautifully as that in Chinese. I personally think that English is sometimes not so powerful as Chinese. You may find it in this poem.
Here is another example. In Liu’s essay An Eulogium on a Humble Cell (《陋室铭》), with less than 100 words, he shows a lively picture of his humble cell. However, it also shows how he was happy with the poor and simple life. People may find it strange that one can feel happy living in such a humble cell. Learning from his famous sentences, “Be fragrant because of my virtues” (斯是陋室，惟吾德馨), I think to be a respectable man is more important than to live in big houses, to wear beautiful clothes, to enjoy delicious food, and even to gain knowledge.

Lighting is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena (现象). It is also one of the most deadly phenomena. A bolt of lightning is six times hotter than the surface (表面) of the Sun and gives out 30,000 amps of electricity (电). It can travel at 100,000 kilometers per hour and has the ability to hit a target up to 40 kilometers away. About 1,000 people around the world are killed by lightning every day.
Only about ten percent of people struck by lightening will die, but the others are very badly injured (受伤的), with burns, broken bones, blindness, deafness, paralysis, or memory loss. However, when the electricity passes through their brain, it can occasionally have unusual and even positive effects. Some blind people have got their sight back after being struck by lightning. One woman said a psychological test showed her intelligence (智力) had greatly improved, and one man said he could no longer feel cold at all and could go out in temperature below freezing in just a T-shirt!
So what should you do to stay safe in a thunderstorm The most important rule is to stay inside, but do not go near phones, electrical appliances, plumbing, or water. If you are stuck outside, do not take shelter under a tree. Instead, roll yourself up into a ball on the ground as small as possible. And do not think it has to be raining in order for lightning to strike.
Strangely, lightning seems to prefer some people to others. If you are a man, you are six times more likely to be struck by lightning than a woman!

Life skills are important and should be taught as part of labor education (劳动教育). In 2020, the Ministry of Education (MOE教育部) gave a revised course for high schools across the country. Labour education, also called education on the hardworking spirit (精神), covers housework, school labour and community voluntary services (志愿服务).
“Labour education must be carried out with the purpose (目的) to develop the view of the world, life and values and develop an interest in doing housework,” said the Vice-Minister of Education.
According to China Youth Daily, the labour course will take six credits (学分)—the same as English and physics. Voluntary service, as part of labour education, would take two credits. The MOE also asks schools to make sure 40 hours of voluntary service during the full three school years.
According to Xinhua, the young in our country do too little housework and that they think labour jobs aren’t important. Because of a lot of school stress, schools think the educational course is more important, and parents sometimes think that housework wastes their kids’ time.
According to a survey, primary and middle school students in China only spend 12 minutes a day on housework, compared with 72 minutes in the USA, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France.

Poems from Tang are very famous in China’s history. Today, I’d like to recommend Song of Autumn, one of the poems by Liu Yuxi, a famous poet and writer in the mid Tang dynasty.
Just as shown in the first line of the poem, most ancient poets liked to describe autumn as a sad time, but in this poem the season appears differently. In Liu’s eyes, autumn, full of life and hope, is even better than spring morning. He describes the bright scene of a crane riding the clouds and flying into the blue sky.
With his poems paying special attention to expressing personal feelings, as well as the daily life of common people, Liu wrote poems with beautiful music-like words. You may feel it in this poem. Life skills are important and should be taught as part of labor education (劳动教育). In 2020, the Ministry of Education (MOE教育部) gave a revised course for high schools across the country. Labour education, also called education on the hardworking spirit (精神), covers housework, school labour and community voluntary services (志愿服务).
“Labour education must be carried out with the purpose (目的) to develop the view of the world, life and values and develop an interest in doing housework,” said the Vice-Minister of Education.
According to China Youth Daily, the labour course will take six credits (学分)—the same as English and physics. Voluntary service, as part of labour education, would take two credits. The MOE also asks schools to make sure 40 hours of voluntary service during the full three school years.
According to Xinhua, the young in our country do too little housework and that they think labour jobs aren’t important. Because of a lot of school stress, schools think the educational course is more important, and parents sometimes think that housework wastes their kids’ time.
According to a survey, primary and middle school students in China only spend 12 minutes a day on housework, compared with 72 minutes in the USA, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France.
However, doing housework does not take young people’s attention away. Instead, it is necessary for developing a strong working spirit. “the earlier you start, the better…” the writer of How to Raise an Adult said.
