The day before my daughter Norah’s fourth birthday, I picked her up from preschool. On the way, she said, “I like old people best because they walk slowly like I walk slowly and they have soft skin like I have soft skin.” What she said marked a 1 beginning.
The following day, her birthday, again on the way home, she asked 2 we could stop at the store to buy cakes for her. How could I say 3 to a birthday girl After paying for the bill, I noticed that Norah was standing up in the cart, excitedly announcing, “Hi, old person! It’s my birthday today! ” However, the old man in front of her didn’t show he was 4 by my talkative child. He replied with a smile, “Well, little lady! And how old are you today ” After a few minutes’ chat, Norah offered to take a photo with the old man called Mr. Dan, his expression changed from surprised to delighted. We exchanged our phone numbers. There was magic happening in the store that day, and we could 5 feel it.
During our first visit in Mr. Dan’s home, we walked with him to his front door. He pulled out a knife and 6 the only blooming red rose. He spent ten minutes cutting every thorn(剌) off the stem before handing it to his new friend. Norah keeps that rose, now 7 as a bone, under pillow for a long time.
Norah asks about Mr. Dan every day. She worries about him. She wonders if he’s 8 or cold. She wants him to be OK. She wants him to feel loved. Mr. Dan thinks about Norah too. One day Susie was unhappy when she came home from school.“what’s the matter, my dear ” asked her mother, drawing her to her side and smiling.
“All our class must hand in compositions tomorrow. We must write 12 lines at least. But I can never write one. I’ll have to go to school without a composition, for I won’t copy one from a book, or ask you or papa to write one for me.”
“That’s right,” said her mother.“You’ll be happier with a poor composition, if it’s your own, than with a fine one written by somebody else. But cheer up. Run into the garden and play. I’ll call you in half an hour. Don’t think about your composition now. Just have a good time.”
It seemed just a few minutes to Susie before she heard her mother calling her. She went into the house immediately-her hands full of sweet flowers, and her face red with exercise.
Then her mother asked her to sit by the window with a nice piece of paper and a pencil, and write something about what she could see. “Never mind your composition; do this to please me, and we’ll talk about that later.”
Although Susie thought her mother’s request was strange, she knew she always had a good reason for everything she did. So she did as her mother requested.
As she looked out, she first saw the western sky and some bright, sunset clouds.“Oh, mother, what a sunset!”
“Don’t talk. Just write.”
The pencil began moving rapidly across the paper. She wrote about the sunset clouds, the look of the distant hills, the streets, the river, the garden with its flowers, and the birds flying past the window. She forgot all about the terrible composition!
Just as she had reached the bottom of the page, her mother came in and said with a smile, “Well, Susie, how does that composition come on ”
“Composition! You told me not to think about it, and I’ve never thought of it once. I’ve had such a nice time writing about what I could see from the window.”
Mrs. Smith took the paper and read what Susie had written. She said, “There, Susie, that’s a very nice composition, really.”
“A composition! Is that a composition ” Susie asked in surprise.
“Yes, my dear, and a very good one, too, if we find a title for it,” replied her mother, Then she added, “I’m sure it will please your teacher, as it does me. You see, it’s easy enough to write a composition if you have anything interesting to write about.”

“Now, can you think what the Mirror of Erised shows us all ” asked Dumbledore.
Harry shank his head.
“Let me explain. The happiest man on earth would be able to use the Mirror of Erised like a normal mirror, that is, he would look into it and see himself exactly as he is. Does that help ”
Harry thought. Then he said slowly, “It shows us what we want... whatever we want...”
“Yes and no,” said Dumbledore quietly. “It shows us nothing more or less than the deepest, strongest desire (欲望) of our hearts. You, who have never known your family, see them standing around you. Ronald Weasley, who has always been overshadowed (使黯然失色) by his brothers, sees himself standing alone, the best of all of them. However, this mirror will give us neither knowledge or truth. Men have wasted away before it, entranced (使入迷) by what they have seen, or been driven mad, not knowing if what it shows is real or even possible.
“The Mirror will be moved to a new home tomorrow, Harry, and I ask you not to go looking for it again. If you ever do run across it, you will now be prepared. It does not do to dwell (总是想着) on dreams and forget to live, remember that. Now why don’t you put that admirable cloak back on and get off to bed ”
Harry stood up.
“Sir—Professor Dumbledore Can I ask you something ”
“Obviously, you’ve just done so,” Dumbledore smiled. “You may ask me one more thing, however.”
“What do you see when you look in the Mirror ”
“I I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks.”
Harry stared.
“One can never have enough socks,” said Dumbledore. “Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn’t get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books.”
It was only when he was back in bed that it struck Harry that Dumbledore might not have been quite truthful. But then, he thought, it had been quite a personal question.

One day, three of my friends came to our house.
They told me they wanted to go to Africa. They asked me if I wanted to go with them. I said, "Yes, I want to go with you."
We started to prepare all the necessary things for the journey. Soon we were ready to go. I said goodbye to my wife and we started our journey. Our plan was to be back in two months.
We left Brazil on the first of September, 1655. Our ship was very big but we were only seventeen men. The ship was full of things for business. We had cups, glass, mirrors, knives and other products.
At the beginning of our journey the weather was very good, but very hot. In one week, a hurricane (飓风) came and it was threatening our ship for the next twelve days. After the hurricane passed, we saw we went quite far from our original (原来的) journey and were instead close to the northern part of Brazil near the Orinoco River. The ship was badly damaged, so we could no longer go to Africa.
The captain wanted us to go back and repair the ship, but I strongly disagreed with him. We went over the maps and decided the best thing to do was to go to Barbados and repair the ship there.
When we started this short trip, a second hurricane came. The next morning one of the sailors cried out, "Land " and at that moment the ship stopped in shallow (浅的) water. We expected the ship to break apart at any moment because of the strong wind, so we all got into the small boat the ship carried. This was very dangerous because the seventeen of us were crowded in the boat, and it had no sail.
The waves were very big. The wind was extremely strong. The wind pushed us to big rocks. We knew the crash was close.
Suddenly, a huge wave appeared and overturned the boat. I was covered with water and couldn't breathe. I couldn't see tile others or the boat. But I saw a little beach between the rocks.
Another wave carried me to the beach. I tried to get up. I tried to go further froth the sea. I was able to move ten metres up. I was safe. But my arms and legs were very weak. I fell down and I was lying on the beach.

Habit is something we do almost unconsciously(无意识地). An example of this would be having breakfast or saying “please” and “thank you”. Good habits can be part of our daily life. But if we don’t have those habits, how can we form them According to a study published by the European Journal of Social Psychology(心理学), it takes about 66 days to form a new habit. Depending only on willpower may not be the answer.
Questioning why you want something could be the first key. Do you want to lose weight because you want to be healthier or look prettier Keeping the goal in your mind may help you stick to a habit.
Try not to be influenced by your mood—a bad mood may mean you don’t want to do anything.
Then, you should also avoid trying to change too much at once—remember that taking steps slowly matters. Giving up all your favorite foods, keeping exercising, and stopping drinking at the same time will probably result in failure. But don’t worry about failing—just start again!
Finally, don’t do things outside your comfort zone(舒适区). If you hate carrots, don’t try hard to add them to your diet just to be healthier. Eat something you like! It might not be quick, but if you follow these tips, you may be able to change something for the better or kick a bad habit.
