It’s time to go back to high school.Students are excited about the new beginning. But for many kids, the first day is more about friends than classes, and maybe with good reason. On that day,the teacher takes attendance(点名),hands out books, and describes the teaching plan.If a student hears the same things in seven classes, you can’t blame(责备) them for thinking it’s going to be another long year. When the high schoolers’ parents ask what they did in school,it’s pretty likely that the answer will be “Nothing.”
It doesn’t have to be this way.Kids always want exciting changes, and you can give them a taste of how appealing your course will be.One English teacher asks students to write 77 words about what they want to get out of her class. Then she reads their responses out aloud. She keeps the responses until the last day of the school year. Finally she hands them back to students so that they can see if they achieved what they wanted. After encouraging kids with a year-long game, she begins the English course.
On the first day of science,a teacher gives students 30 minutes to build something to improve people’s lives.A history teacher organizes a debate on whether Swiss cheese is better than cheddar. In math class, another teacher puts students in groups of three, and gives them six minutes to come up with as many answers as possible to the question,“What is math good for?”
The new class activities are part of our school-wide movement to improve the first day of classes. Many teachers choose to use creative ways to encourage kids from day one.And all students seem to enjoy the changes.Quite a few parents told me that their kids said,“I think English (or math or biology or Spanish) is going to be great!”

A.Too boring. B.A bit strange.

2.What will the students find out in English class at the end of the school year
A.If their writing skills have improved.
B.If their expectations have been realized.
C.If they can understand the 77 words.
D.If the teacher likes their responses.
3.What do the teachers in paragraph 3 have in common
A.All try to organize different debates.
B.All ask students to work in groups.
C.All hold discussions on teaching plans.
D.All choose to do something exciting.
4.What is the author’s attitude to the movement

Conflict(冲突) between teenagers and parents happens for a lot of reasons.Sometimes conflict happens between teenagers and parents just because conflict happens between human beings anyway.Humans have different needs, different feelings, different opinions about what they want, and the relationship with people can be really difficult. However, teenagers can cause further conflict because of the hormonal(激素的) changes that are happening and the stage of life that they’re in.
Teenagers and parents have different understanding about rules and at times they find it difficult to look into the future. So parents and teenagers will often experience conflict about many things, from chores, homework, whether teenagers speak respectfully or not to what they’re allowed to do.
Before we think about rule boundaries(界线) for teenagers,we need to make sure that we have a really good relationship base. There’s no point saying “From now on,you have to listen to me” if you don’t have a positive relationship with your teenager. We need to go back and make sure there is some degree of shared respect, and some degree of positive communication and enjoyment being together. If you do that first,it means that rule boundaries are a lot easier to set up.
Often we’re dealing with conflict on the fly. This is not the right time to be dealing with it.We really want parents and teenagers to sit down and think about the kinds of things that need to happen in the house before the problems come. The more detailed your rule boundaries are for teenagers, the more likely it is that they are going to follow them.So this means we don’t have rule boundaries like “Have the bathroom cleaned”.It needs to be “The floors mopped, nothing on the countertop and the mirrors cleaned by ten o’clock every Saturday”.Rule boundaries need to be written down and set out ahead of time so the teenager knows exactly what’s expected.
5.What’s important to set up a rule boundary easily for teenagers
A.Being strict from the start.
B.Avoiding close talks with them.
C.Forming good relations with them first.
D.Saying “No” to their requirements.
6.Which of the following rules are teenagers most likely to follow
A.Doing some housework.
B.Having a good reading habit.
C.Cleaning the bathroom.
D.Finishing your homework by five.
7.What do the underlined words “on the fly” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.In a hurry. B.On the plane.
C.By oneself. D.Another day.
8.What’s the best title for the text
A.Growing Pains
B.Teenage Problems
C.Knowing the Conflict
D.Parent-Child Conflict and Solutions

If you have a hard time getting along with your teachers, going to class can be a nightmare(噩梦).So here are some tips to help you build a friendly relationship with almost all the teachers.
Talk to your teachers. In many cases,a short discussion can clear up the entire conflict.Ask your teachers if it is convenient for them to talk in private. 1 If you appear angry or unhappy in front of them, the conflict is unlikely to be solved.
2 Teachers have many years of teaching experience in the subjects they teach. So discussing the best ways to succeed in the classroom may give you the opportunity to see the best instructors.
Learn to understand their teaching methods. 3 If you are used to a very relaxing class, learning to be successful in a strict environment is difficult and vice versa(反之亦然).In most cases,it is necessary to give yourself some time to get used to a new teaching method.
Ask about your teachers’ hobbies. If you know about one of their hobbies, you can talk about it with them. And you can try to find if you have something in common. 4
Learn why your teachers choose to teach.Approach the teachers at an appropriate(适当的) time before or after class, not during class.Consider saying something like,“I’ve always wondered why people become teachers. 5 Why did you decide to teach?”
A.It seems to be a difficult job.
B.Ask your teachers how you can do well in class.
C.Join in activities with your teachers after school.
D.Always be polite and show respect in a conversation.
E.A way to discover the positive side of things is to keep diaries.
F.A shared interest may help you see your teachers from a different viewpoint.
G.Sometimes, you may not like some teachers because of their ways of teaching.
