阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Sunshine and beach means perfect travel on a hot summer day. In fact, there are many colorful beaches in the world. Look at the world’s most colorful beaches here. Which one would you like to choose
Pink: Pink Sand Beach, Harbour Island, Bahamas
Harbor Island is celebrated for its pale pink, coral reef-protected shore. The beach borrows its color from itty-bitty, bright pink microorganisms known as foraminifera (有孔虫), and its sand is always delightfully cool to the touch, so you can walk barefoot without worrying about burning your toes.
Green: Papakolea Beach, Hawaii
Situated near South Point of the island of Hawaii, Papakolea Beach is a pretty uncommon sight. The super remote stretch of green sand is carved into the side of Puu Mahana - a cinder cone (火山砾锥) over 49, 000 years old which, thanks to erosion, has tinted the shore with olivine lava.
White: Hyams Beach, New South Wales, Australia
Australia’s Hyams Beach has been deemed the brightest and whitest sand on earth - just consult your Guinness Book of World Records for proof. The sand here is made up of bright white silica, and it is known for its fine texture and pillow-like softness. Not only do visitors get to enjoy great visuals, but they also get to walk on the silkiest sands that they are ever likely to experience.
Red: Kaihalulu Beach Maui Island, America
Kaihalulu Beach boasts of its magnificent red sand beach. It’s no surprise as to where the color comes from - the beach is surrounded by red cliffs, and the contrast of the blue water against the red landscape is simply stunning.
1. What makes Pink Sand Beach pink
A. The cool sand. B. The cinder cone.
C. The coral reef. D. The foraminifera.
2. Which is the best choice for the silkiest sands walking experience
A. Pink Sand Beach. B. Papakolea Beach.
C. Hyams Beach. D. Kaihalulu Beach.
3. Where does the text probably come from
A. A science fiction. B. A history documentary.
C. A travel brochure. D. A book review.

Wang Haoze, a crew member of the Shenzhou XIX mission and China’s first female spaceflight engineer, studied energy and power engineering at Southeast University before receiving a bachelor’s degree in 2012 and then continued to take part in a three-year postgraduate program in thermal engineering at the same school. Before her graduation, Wang submitted her resume to the Beijing Aerospace Propulsion Institute.
At the institute, Wang was part of the research and development of new models of rocket engines, a new field that she had never been involved in. Faced with new challenges and knowledge, she enjoyed learning and overcoming difficulties, which appeared as an intriguing game to her. Hard work and perseverance always pay off. She gradually became the backbone of her team. Three years after working on rocket engines, she was told by human resources colleagues that the country would recruit the third generation of astronauts.
Wang and 17 male candidates were selected and divided into three groups: seven spacecraft pilots, another seven spaceflight engineers and four mission payload specialists.
At the Astronaut Center of China, Wang has faced grueling challenges. She has spent tough times with teammates in survival drills in deserts and at sea, and has endured a 72-hour sleepless test. Despite the difficulties, she said she has never considered quitting.
Looking into her first orbital journey the astronaut said: “I want to float inside Tiangong to experience the excitement of weightlessness. I also hope that I can complete each and every task successfully and make our ‘space home’ better. ”
4. What did Wang Haoze major in before 2012
A. Space engineering. B. Thermal engineering.
C. Aerospace propulsion. D. Energy and power engineering.
5. What can be learned about Wang from paragraph 2
A. She did research into rocket engines before.
B. She shrank from difficulties she encountered.
C. She played a key role in her team at the institute.
D. She saw an astronaut recruitment advertisement.
6. What can be used to describe Wang Haoze
A. Courageous and humble. B. Determined and generous.
C Perseverant and determined. D. Approachable and influential.
7. What can we infer about Wang
A. Wang handles the test easily. B. Wang desires for her space mission.
C. Wang wants to abandon her training. D. Wang contributes a lot to space fields.

When delivering medications to patients, one of the most effective methods is direct injection into the bloodstream using a needle. But this can be an uncomfortable experience, especially for kids or adults with a fear of needles. While patients do have the option to take pills instead, some drugs are not absorbed effectively this way.
Now, researchers from China and Switzerland have designed a needle-free alternative: a tiny, drug-filled cup that sticks to the inside of the cheek. The patch (贴片) is easy to use, can be removed at any time, and prevents saliva (唾液) from breaking down the drug, which can be taken into through the lining of the inner cheek.
To test the design, the team 3D-printed their 1. 1×0. 6 centimeter material. They loaded each with some drug and stuck them inside the cheeks of three beagles, dogs with a similar inner cheek lining to humans. For comparison, they also delivered the drug to beagles via a pill and via injection. After three hours, the team found that drug plasma concentrations (血药浓度) in the dogs with the patch were more than 150 times higher than those in the dogs that took a pill.
Besides, 40 healthy human volunteers self-applied water-filled patches to see how well they would stay on while talking, moving and using their mouthwash. After 30 minutes, only five of the 40 patches had fallen off, which the study authors write was because of improper placement or handling. Most volunteers said they had a preference for a patch over injection for daily, weekly and monthly applications.
Though the patches need further testing to determine how repeated use affects patients, the researchers conclude that their technique is simple and easily self-applicable by patients. Next, the team wants to bring their suction-cup design to market. They will have to conduct more tests before starting human clinical trials.
8. What is the main problem with the traditional needle injection
A. It is not effective for all drugs. B. It may cause discomfort to patients.
C. It is too expensive for many patients. D. It requires special training for medical staff.
9. How does the new needle-free alternative work
A. It dissolves the drug in the saliva.
B. It uses a 3D-printed suction-cup to inject the drug.
C. It sticks to the inner cheek for the drug to be absorbed.
D. It prevents the drug being broken down by stomach acid.
10. What can we know from the experiment
A. Most patches had little effect. B. The majority of volunteers preferred a patch.
C. Dogs injected with the drug had side effects. D. Dogs taking pills showed no drug absorption.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Magical Drug Made from Beagle B. Effective Treatment for Pill Taking
C. Alternative Patch for Needle Injection D. Medical Research Designed for Patients

Airborne (空气传播的) chemicals found in common fossil fuels are interfering with the pollination process, new research shows — to the extent that it’s changing the way a flower smells. And while this might have a minor impact on people who like to stop and smell the flowers, the effect on insects — which can no longer find flowers to land on, especially at night — is concerning, experts say.
A kind of insect called hawk moth, which Jeff Riffell, a biologist from the University of Washington, and his colleagues studied, detects the pleasant smell of flowers from over a kilometer away. One of their favorites is the pale evening primrose. In the fields in eastern Washington State, the research team bagged the flowers to collect samples of their scent. In the laboratory, they isolated the individual chemicals that made up the smell.
The team discovered that certain scent chemicals that moths are attracted to degrade (分解) in the presence of NO3, a strong pollutant that is formed from the emissions of cars, coal-fired power plants and other industrial sources. NO3 builds up in the air at night because it is destroyed by sunlight. In laboratory experiments, two moth species struggled to fly to the evening primrose scent when exposed to NO levels typically seen at night in cities. When the researchers went back into the field and treated the scent from both real and artificial flowers with NO , wild moth visits dropped by about 70%. “The flowers only bloom once per night, ” Riffel said. “Without their pollinators, there can be a huge change in the plant community. ”
Regardless, there is now a concern for pollinators like moths to become unable to fulfill their ecosystem duties. Riffell noted that about 75% of over 240, 000 documented flowering plants need insect intervention — and that about 70 species of pollinators are endangered or threatened.
“In recent years, there has been a growing interest in ‘sensory pollution’, ” said Riffell. This pollution, which arises from human activity, can change wildlife behavior, he said. Noise pollution, for example, has been shown to impact birdsong and may be linked to an increase in whale strandings(搁浅). Light pollution, meanwhile, can confuse a range of animals including migratory birds and sea turtles.
12. What do the airborne chemicals most affect
A. The way flowers smell. B. People who like smelling flowers.
C. Insects that find flowers to land on. D. The process of collecting flower scents.
13. What does the underlined word “isolated” mean in paragraph 2
A. Combined. B. Separated. C. Identified. D. Preserved.
14. Why do the moths land less on flowers
A Scent chemicals break down. B. Sunshine damages the scents.
C. Flowers blossom only one time. D. Vehicles release various pollutants.
15. What does the passage mainly talk about
A. Hawk moth can not locate flowers.
B. Human activity causes sensory pollution.
C. Air pollution changes the way flowers smell.
D. Light pollution destroys the wildlife’s habitats.

Time management is the process of planning and controlling how much time to spend on specific activities. The amount and quality of what you achieve are crucially dependent on how effectively you manage your time. Based on our experience as scientists and supervisors, here is some advice on how to manage your time more effectively as a scientist.

Give yourself a break

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Recently divorced, I had no job and was on my way downtown to go the rounds of the employment offices. I sat down in the streetcar — and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle.
I got off the streetcar in a downpour and thankfully opened the umbrella to protect myself. I examined the handle and saw a name carved on it. Then I searched a telephone book for the name on the umbrella and found it. I called and a lady answered.
She said in surprise that it was her umbrella, which her parents, now dead, had given her for a birthday present and it had been stolen from her locker at school (she was a teacher) more than a year before.
I managed to find her and gave the umbrella back to her. She took the umbrella, and her eyes were filled with tears. The teacher wanted to give me a reward, but I declined her. We talked for a while, and I left after giving her my address at her request.
My last job ended the day before Christmas, my thirty-dollar rent was soon due, and I had fifteen dollars to my name — which Peggy and I would need for food. I had already purchased my daughter a small tree, and we were going to decorate it that night.
The air was full of the sound of Christmas merriment as I walked from the streetcar to my small apartment. Bells rang and children shouted in the cold dusk of the evening, and windows were lighted and everyone was running and laughing. But there should be no Christmas for me, I knew, no gifts, no remembrance what so ever.
I felt so helpless and so lonely. What was to become of us We would have only hamburgers for our Christmas dinner tomorrow. I stood in the cold little kitchen, misery overwhelmed me.

【答案】One possible version:
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and I ran to answer it, only to find a pile of boxes beside the door. “It must be a mistake,” I said, staring at these boxes. With curiosity, Peggy and I sat on the floor and opened them. A huge doll, three times the size of the one I had bought for her. Gloves. Candy. A beautiful leather purse. Incredible! I looked for the name of the sender. Inside one box was a note which read “Thanks for the lost umbrella and wish you a merry Christmas.” It was the teacher who gave me the surprise.
Seeing these surprises from the teacher, I knew we would have food and ornaments (装饰品) for this Christmas. Our dinner that night was the most delicious I had ever eaten. I forgot I had no money for the rent and only fifteen dollars in my purse and no job. My daughter and I ate and laughed together in happiness. Then we decorated the little tree with those ornaments and marveled at it. I put Peggy to bed and set up her gifts around the tree and a sweet peace flooded me. I had some hope again.
