He Studies Harder Than He Used to
Li Wen is a normal 15-year-old boy from the
countryside. He works very hard and does well in
school. It is hard to believe that he used to have difficulties in school. When he was a little boy, he seldom caused any problems, and his family spent a lot of time together. ______. His parents moved to the city to look for jobs, and his grandparents came to take care of him. But he missed his parents so much and he often felt lonely and unhappy.

(1) absent 作形容词，意为”缺席的；不在场的”，常与介词from
连用。
e.g. They were absent from work that day. 他们那天没有上班。
absence 作名词，意为“缺席，不在”。
e.g. The decision was made in my absence. 这个决定是在我不在场的
时候做出的。
(2) fail 此处用作及物动词，意为“未能通过”；也可用作不及物动词，因此 fail an examination（考试不及格）也可表示为 fail in an examination。
e.g. Bob always fails (in) his examinations. 鲍勃总是考试不及格。
fail 也可跟动词不定式，fail to do sth.意为“未能/没能做某事”。
e.g. I failed to pass the driving test. 我未能通过驾驶考试。

相当于even if，多用于书面语中。

e.g. He advised leaving early. 他建议早点儿离开。
in person 意为“亲身；亲自”。
e.g. I will go to fetch it in person. 我要亲自去取。
