When you think of a roller coaster(过山车),what comes to mind?Is it a modern metal machine that allows young people to go very fast on a track If so,you're like most people. But what came before these quick and huge roller coasters Let's jump into the history of this exciting ride.
The Russians might be the first to build “roller coasters”.In the 1600s,they built tall wooden ramps(斜坡) and covered them with water in winter, which soon turned into ice. To ride them, people would climb up a 21 meter ladder(梯子). After being pushed, the riders would enjoy speeding down a 183 meter long ramp. Big cities and small towns enjoyed it very much.
The Frenchmen took the idea back to France in the early 1800s and named it “the Russian mountain”.Because it is warm in France, the French started to use wax(蜡) instead of ice. Later, they began adding wheels to the sleds(雪橇) for all of the seasons.
The idea of riding roller coasters didn't make it across the Atlantic Ocean until the early 19th century. The Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway was the first coaster in the US. In the beginning,it was built to carry coal. The railway went through a 14 kilometer long downhill track in the mountains of Pennsylvania.
The golden age of roller coasters lasted the whole 1920s. During this time, designers were making roller coasters taller, longer, and faster than ever before. The Great Depression(大萧条) of the 1930s and World War Ⅱ put an end to popularity of roller coasters.
In 1955,Walt Disney brought back the popularity of roller coasters by building a new amusement park in California,US—Disneyland. A new type of roller coaster, the Matterhorn Bobsleds, opened in Disneyland in 1959. It was built with steel. Using steel allowed the roller coaster to go in many more directions than the wooden ramps did in the past. This idea changed the roller coaster industry into what it is today.

How do we know the time A clock,a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries people have developed different ways of telling the time.
About 5,500 years ago,the Egyptians invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow(影子) showed the movement of the sun. So people were able to know midday. It's said that the Egyptians made a sundial(日晷) about 3,500 years ago. It was smaller than the sun clock and could measure the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night,it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock or a sundial. The water clock was the first clock not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows from one container to another. When the water reaches a certain level,it moves a lever(控制杆) and this shows the time. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3,400 years ago. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time.
In the 13th century, the mechanical(机械的) clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries,it was developed. For example, springs(发条) were added around 1500. This enabled people to get the correct time and allowed clocks to be smaller. In 1936 the first quartz clock was developed. Clocks became cheaper to make. It's easy for ordinary people to own a clock. People began depending on them more and more to run business or markets and so on. More recently,in 1956,came the digital clock. And nowadays satellites(卫星) send our mobile phones the time to the exact second.
There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed on time and not missing appointments.

Cave paintings are the oldest pictures. Some of them are almost 30,000 years old. Many of these paintings show animals or hunting scenes. The images do not have written words. But when we look at them,we get an idea of how people felt when drawing them. The paintings tell stories of hopes and fears. They are an early form of communication.
Sometime between 4000 and 3000 BCE,people in Egypt developed the skill of writing. They engraved(雕刻) text on stone tablets first. But it was impossible to carry stones from place to place. The invention of papyrus(纸莎草纸) allowed documents to be moved easily. Writing on papyrus made it easier to correct mistakes, too.
People made the first books from papyrus and thin animal skins. Paper was invented in China as early as 105 CE. The quality of paper soon became very good. The world's oldest known printed book is from China, too. It was published on May 11,868 CE. In Europe, books were written by hand until the middle of the 15th century when Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in Germany. Since that time, almost 140 million books have been published(出版) worldwide. For many people, one of life's greatest pleasures is spending a few hours reading books in a bookshop.
Books will be around for many years,of course. But some people prefer(更喜欢) reading e books. They are easier to take when you travel, and you can download them immediately from the Internet. Now you can buy your books whenever you want without having to leave the comfort of your home.
