I first began experiencing anxiety and depression at the age of 14, after being bullied (欺凌) at school for years. While at first anxiety and depression would come and go, it eventually became a constant part of my life.
I was so eager to find the solution to overcoming my anxiety and depression that I tried everything from when I was in college to graduate school: mood-changing medication, special teas, yoga, anything I read about in books, and advice given by doctors. Despite this, I still felt I hadn't even come close to managing the problem.
But one afternoon, my eyes fell upon an article in a magazine I was reading that talked about how dogs were able to help people with anxiety and depression. The very next day, I decided to get a dog — a corgi. When I brought my little corgi, Buddy, home, I didn't realize how much he would change my life. It didn't happen right away, however.
Once the “puppy excitement” went away, my anxiety and depression came back as usual. One morning, I woke up with those familiar feelings again. I didn't want to get out of bed. I turned to pull the covers back over my head and gave up. That was when I saw Buddy.
Buddy started jumping all over me, licking my face, letting me know that it was time to go outside. It was as if he were saying, “There's no time to be sad; the world is amazing!”
And for the first time in my life, on a day when my anxiety and depression were strong, I got out of bed. I put on my winter clothes and went for a walk in the snow with my new friend. I realized at that moment, walking down the street in winter, my life was changing. I really was a new girl.
Sure, I still have days when I feel down or anxious. But with Buddy by my side, I've finally learned how to manage these feelings and emotions.
4. According to the first two paragraphs, the author________.
A. has been a school bully for years
B. suffered from depression since college
C. tried many ways to fight depression but nothing worked
D. felt less depressed after taking medication and doing yoga
5. How did the author know having a dog might help with her depression
A. She read it in an article by chance.
B. A doctor recommended it to her.
C. She heard it from some other depression sufferers.
D. She found out herself after spending some time with a corgi.
6. How does the author feel in the last paragraph
A. Optimistic. B. Anxious. C. Confused. D. Doubtful.
7. What is the best title for the passage
A. Puppy excitement
B. Keeping a dog benefits us a lot
C. Getting rid of anxiety
D. Defeating depression with Buddy
C
Long before the scientific world became concerned about the impacts of introducing nonnative species, a total of 100 starlings (八哥) were released in New York City’s Central Park. Eugene Schieffelin was a Shakespeare lover who wanted to bring to America as many birds as possible mentioned by the Bard in his poems. He imported 60 starlings and released them on a March day in Central Park. A year later, he introduced an additional 40 birds.
Within 50 years, they had spread to every state, and today they number an estimated 200 million. In San Diego County, the starling seems at home in both urban and agricultural environments, frequently feeding on the ground, where it probes lawns and fields for insects, worms and snails.
Nesting begins in March and peaks in May when the young birds join large flocks in places like Lake Henshaw, dairy farms or Ramona Grasslands. They frequently take over the nest of other birds, and they don’t seem particular, having been observed nesting in many kinds of trees.
In addition to competing with native species for food and nesting locations, there have been estimates that starlings cause at least MYM800 million in crop damage annually. Much of the damage they cause is the result of their concentration. Massive flocks of birds are, though beautiful, can be destructive, even dangerous to aircraft, with more than 800 incidents reported by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Despite their bad press, the starling is popular with bird-watchers and also the Shakespeare lovers, who often refer to the starling probably because the bird is quite an imitator. It can imitate the calls of up to 20 other species, including hawks, robins and flickers.
Love him or hate him, Schieffelin’s release of 100 European starlings had a lasting impact in the United States. He had no idea that he also proved the famous words of Shakespeare, “What’s done cannot be undone.”
8. What made Eugene Schieffelin introduce starlings into New York City
A. The descriptions in Shakespeare’s poems.
B. The intention to protect local environment.
C. The scientists’ concern about the worsening environment.
D. The park visitors’ curiosity about a new bird species.
9. We can infer from the passage that ______.
A. the starling’s arrival has benefited the local farming
B. the starling is highly adaptable to the local environment
C. the starling is not so aggressive as the local bird species
D. bird lovers have provided them with abundant food source
10. As for the local eco-system, the gathering of a large number of birds in a location can be ______.
A. amazing B. impressive C. disgusting D. disastrous
11. “What’s done cannot be undone” at the end of the passage can be best explained as“______”
A. The early bird catches the worm B. Spilt water can’t be gathered up

The idea of Buy Now Pay Later or BNPL, has attracted millions of shoppers with the promise of interest-free credit. An incredible 45 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds in the UK turned to BNPL last year, according to The Money Charity. Lenders say they offer a better deal than credit cards, because they do not charge interest but make money from affiliate deals (关联交易) with retailers (零售商). It may be a new way of borrowing money, but the old rules still apply: unless you repay the debt quickly, you are building up trouble for the future.
Now, BNPLs are growing in popularity and do have upsides — mostly convenient shopping with no interest financing and no strict approval requirements. However, they also make it effortless to overshop, overspend, and get in over your head with credit problems.
Lenders pay the retailer on your behalf, and then you repay over 30 days or three months, spreading the cost to help with your cash flow. They say this is fairer and less expensive than credit cards. That may be true, but BNPL has dangers, too.
BNPL lenders may not charge any interest, but they still want you to pay back the money you have borrowed, so what if you can’t Typically, you have 30 days to pay. If you don’t, your lender will contact you to chase late payments. If you still don’t pay, they call in the debt collectors.
Citizens Advice says that 14 million used a BNPL product last year, but six million did not understand what they were signing up for. Some 26% of BNPL customers regretted their choice, while 41% struggled with repayment. Younger people were particularly at risk. A quarter of those making BNPL repayments couldn’t afford food, rent or bills as a result.
Another worry is that BNPL lenders only perform soft searches on a person’s credit report so do not see the borrower’s true credit status. This means they cannot remove people with financial problems and may end up adding to their troubles. BNPL lenders say they do careful checks to make sure they never lend more than a consumer can afford to pay back, and also pause accounts if a single payment is late. Nobody wants to be pursued by debt collectors. If you do use BNPL credit, never borrow more than you can afford to repay.
12. How do BNPL lenders earn profits according to the text
A. They force borrowers to pay their debts.
B They require payment for retailers’ services.
C. They receive a certain fee from affiliate deals.
D. They charge interest from 18 to 24-year-old users.
13. Why does BNPL become more and more popular
A. For strict approval requirements and no interest.
B. For its convenience of shopping with high interest.
C. For buying anything needed without credit problems.
D. For convenient shopping and no strict approval requirements.
14. What problem does the Buy Now Pay Later method have
A. All the young people can’t repay the debt quickly.
B. It is difficult to know the borrower’s real credit status.
C. More than half of BNPL customers can’t afford the payments.
D. BNPL has to depend on debt collectors to get back the money.
15. What do the underlined words “get in over your head” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. To make up your mind.
B. To start to feel happy.
C. To be involved in a difficult situation.
D. To show an indifferent attitude.

At one time children made May Day baskets to celebrate spring and anonymously (匿名地) give the baskets to someone as a gift. When I was in kindergarten, our class started such an adventure. And we decided to anonymously give the baskets to our mothers. For days, we worked on creating paper baskets, following a magic design shared by our teacher Miss Jones. Finally, we attached handles to the tops so that we could secretly hang our baskets on the doors of our houses to give our mothers a surprise.
We finished right on time. Miss Jones brought bunches of colorful flowers for us to fill our baskets with. We had to wait until the day was nearly over before we were allowed to choose the flowers that were just right for our baskets. At last, I chose the biggest, most beautiful flowers, allowing myself to be selfish for my mother.
When the bell rang, we threw on our coats, grabbed our schoolbags and then carefully held our offerings of love. And we ran back to our individual homes!
I was so excited! I ran as fast as I could down the hill, across the street, up the block, heading home. After arrival, when I decided to hang the basket lovingly on our door, I was shocked that my flowers were gone! Apparently, on my way home, all the flowers ran out of the basket. Now, there was only an empty basket! I stood in front of the door and burst into tears.
Soon, my mom came to the door to discover the source of the sadness. As she let me in, helped me off with my coat and relieved me of my school things, I tried to talk about my horrible dilemma (困境). Through sadness of hot tears, I tried to communicate the depth of my sorrow. As she listened, she wiped my face with a cool damp cloth and touched my hair with the other hand. Finally, I fell weakly into her arms. Next, she did what I would never forget. She took a knife from the kitchen and my poor little empty basket from the coffee table.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Then, we went to our garden where there were flowers.

Awkwardly, I hung the basket on our door, knocked hesitantly, and hid.

【答案】Dear Chris,
Learning that you show great interest in Chinese tea culture, I’m writing to introduce it to you.
In China, tea drinking has a long history. It is said that when Shennong was boiling water in the wild, some dried leaves unexpectedly fell into his kettle. He drank the water and felt refreshed. Gradually, it became common practice for ordinary people to drink tea. Drinking tea is of great benefit. It can help us keep fit by reducing fat and controlling blood pressure. Moreover, it contributes to a calm mood and helps us appreciate the harmony between man and nature.
I do hope you can have a chance to experience Chinese tea culture in person.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】Then, we went to our garden where there were flowers. Many flowers had already bloomed. She cut one, placed it in my basket, handed me the knife, and then went to the house to start dinner. Slowly, as I cut the flowers and arranged them in my paper basket, my enthusiasm began returning. And I was becoming peaceful. Cut and arrange and cut and arrange. Soon, again, my gift was ready to be offered. But suddenly, it dawned on me that the element of surprise, so essential to my deed, was now totally gone.
Awkwardly, I hung the basket on our door, knocked hesitantly, and hid. When my mother answered the door, she was so surprised, seeming to have no idea who had left the gift! Unaware that she just pretended, I stepped out of my hiding place. “Baby!” she exclaimed. “Look what someone left on our door! Aren’t they lovely ” With her excitement, all my anxiety disappeared. I danced into her arms. We went into the house, bringing the gift of love. Now, the flowers and the basket are long gone. But the love for each other is everlasting!
