My high school experience was an exercise in frustration for everyone involved. I was in a lot of high-level classes because my test scores were superb, especially in languages. I never got less than an A on any language test-English, Spanish or French. Even a score under 95% was very rare.
However, most of my language teachers found this irritating rather than encouraging because I didn’t pay attention in class. I drew during lectures and my homework grades were far from satisfaction due to me almost never handing anything in. As an adult, I think many of them believed I had to be cheating, especially the one who refused to give me a bonus point on a test that would have raised my average score to an A for the quarter because I was not an A student on account of my study habits in her eyes.
My mom tended to force me to complete my piles of missing assignments during the last week of each quarter, so that I didn’t completely destroy my otherwise good grades. I had exactly one Spanish teacher who I was able to convince that I really was learning in class, regardless of what my pencil was doing at the moment. And it was completely by accident.
One day, she asked a general question in class. I was the only one to raise the hand to answer. I did so, and she replied in a somewhat stunned tone that I was correct. Why so surprised Because at no point in this process did I look up from the drawing I was working on with my other hand. I didn’t think she figured out that the drawing was actually helping me pay attention, but she at least realized it wasn’t damaging anything and stopped blaming me when she caught me drawing instead of taking notes.
24. What was the author like while in high school
A He was appreciated by most teachers.
B. He was misunderstood for his learning style.
C He usually relied on cheating in exams.
D. He did well in exams as well as homework.
25. Why did the teacher refuse to give the author a bonus point
A. She looked down upon the author.
B. The author didn’t hand in his homework.
C. She thought the author didn’t deserve it.
D. The author always drew in class.
26. How did the author’s mother treat him
A. She convinced the teacher of his genuine learning.
B. She reminded him to be concentrated in class.
C. She was indifferent to his behaviour.
D. She pushed him to finish the missing homework.
27. Which words best describe the Spanish teacher
A. Tolerant and responsible. B. Strict and humorous.
C. Capable and friendly. D. Committed and cheerful.
C
The term “digital equity (公平)” has been talked about for several years, but school closures during the COVID-19 epidemic have brought increased attention to the issue. However, while much focus has been on improving access to technology for students, an area of digital equity that often gets neglected is how parents are expected to engage with their children’s schools.
Research shows that students with engaged families earn higher grades, adapt more quickly, have better behavior and social skills. Parents who know what is happening in the classroom are better equipped to help their children succeed and can combine learning at home with learning at school. That’s why equitable communication with parents needs to be part of a district’s overall equity goals.
Equitable parent communication requires schools to meet parents where they are, especially considering that nearly 1 in 4 US homes live with no Internet access. Parents who do not have smart phones or personal computers should have the same access to their children’s teachers as parents with the latest technology.
Often districts use communication platforms that require parents to log into a website, choose a messaging service, or download software. Each of these obstacles restricts communication pathways for parents who do not have access to the required technology. Districts should consider platforms that enable parents to receive phone calls to fixed-line telephones and SMS messages to standard cellphones.
In addition, platforms that focus on “blast” and “mass” types of messaging are sufficient for distributing information related to an entire classroom or school but miss the mark on developing meaningful relationships with individual parents and creating real engaging opportunities. Districts should opt to use tools that create digital equity for parents and create an environment where meaningful conversations can take place.
To conclude, good school-home relationships are a crucial factor in children’s education. Positive school-home relationships must get supported as equitable communication is the pathway to engaging all parents in helping students achieve more success.
28. What does the underlined word “neglected” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Mentioned. B. Ignored. C. Explored. D. Stressed.

A. Students can adapt to school life easily.
B. Students can deal with challenges on their own.
C. Parents’ habits significantly affect their children.
D. Parents’ involvement in children’s schooling is rewarding.
30. What should districts do to promote positive school-home relationships
A. Make environment more friendly
B. Provide free cellphones for parents.
C. Popularize communication websites
D Find ways to provide equitable communication.
31. What is the main idea of the text
A. Digital equity can help students succeed.
B. Parents should value communication platforms.
C. School-home relationships are important in children’s education.
D. Meaningful conversations will benefit children’s education greatly.
D
Digital reading appears to be destroying habits of “deep reading”. Astonishing numbers of people with years of schooling are in effect illiterate. This month’s Ljubljana Manifesto (宣言) explains: “The digital field may promote more reading than ever in history, but it also offers many temptations to read in a superficial and scattered (零散的) manner — or even not to read at all. This increasingly endangers higher-level reading.”
That’s frightening, because “higher-level reading” has been essential to civilization. It enabled the enlightenment and an international increase in empathy. Without it, we would suffer a lot. As the Ljubljana Manifesto notes, “as much as one-third of Europeans struggle even with lower-level reading skills.” More than one-fifth of adults in the US “fall into the illiterate/functionally illiterate category”. Separately, post-pandemic reading scores for American 13-year-olds are the lowest in decades. And the Washington-based Center for Global Development recently estimated that literacy in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa among those with five years of schooling has decreased by 10% this past half century.
Experts in the Ljubljana Manifesto record the demerits of digital reading: “Recent studies of various kinds
indicate a decline of critical and conscious reading, slow reading, non-strategic reading and long-form reading.” When you read a book on paper, you can be entirely inside the experience, absorb hundreds of pages of details thoroughly and begin to capture the world’s complexity. Online, says Maryanne Wolf of UCLA, we are “skimming, scanning, scrolling”. The medium is the message: doing deep reading on your phone is as hard as playing tennis with your phone. Recently, a bright 11-year-old told me I was wasting time on books: he absorbed more information faster from Wikipedia. He had a point. But digital readers also absorb more misinformation and seldom absorb fine perspectives.
In short, as professors from Northwestern University foresaw in 2005, we are returning to the days when only an elite (精英) “reading class” consumes long texts, which is worrying.
32. What can we learn about digital reading from paragraph 1
A. Digital reading has solved the problem of illiteracy.
B. Digital reading has lessened the practice of deep reading.
C. Digital reading has made deep reading accessible to wider readers.
D. Digital reading has aroused a greater appreciation for deep reading.
33. What is the purpose of the figures used in paragraph 2
A. To display the popularity of digital reading.
B To highlight the advantages of deep reading.
C. To present the unfavorable situation of literacy.
D. To stress the illiterate’s lower-level reading skills.
34. What does the underlined word “demerits” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Effects. B. Depths. C. Features. D. Drawbacks.
35. What might be talked about in the following paragraph
A. Advantages of digital reading. B. Benefits of higher-level reading.
C. Ways to encourage digital reading. D. Measures to practice deep reading.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The first day Mohamed went to a fine food store in his new neighborhood, he realized that he really wasn’t in Tunisia anymore. He looked up at the menu board, which had nothing but sandwiches on it, and wondered how he was going to figure out what all of these strange names meant. Mohamed decided that he would just get dessert instead and asked the woman at the counter for ice cream in a cup. She smiled broadly and disappeared behind the big glass display case to fill his order.
While Mohamed waited, he looked at the baked goods in the case. There were sixteen kinds of bagels (百吉饼) and a few different types of cookies that Mohamed didn’t recognize, but there were no pies and definitely nothing from home. Mohamed had been so excited when his parents told him they were immigrating to the United States, but now, his bravery and excitement felt a little out of place.
The woman came back to the counter with a tall paper cup. It contained a long straw and some kind of frothy (有泡沫的) drink. Mohamed, completely confused, took the cup and thanked her, considering the possibility that he had used the wrong word.
“It’s the soda you ordered,” she said, “an ice cream drink in a cup.”
He smiled at the woman again, pointed at one of the bagels, and said, “That one, too, please,” which seemed to work better.
Mohamed took the bagel and his mystery soda to a table and sat down to eat. Why was it that English had been so easy for him in his classes in Tunisia, but when it came down to actually speaking, he couldn’t even get what he wanted to eat
Later, he might find it funny that his English was so hard to figure out that he got a soda instead of the ice cream he wanted. Right now, it just felt depressing that his English was, he thought, disappointing. One mistake seemed to put everything Mohamed wanted or knew about himself impossible to reach.

______
The next day, Mohamed made a plan to engage deeply in English. He started by watching American TV shows and listening to English music. At first, he struggled to understand the fast-paced dialogue and lyrics, but he didn’t give up. Instead, he used subtitles and lyrics websites to help him follow along. Mohamed also joined a local English language class, where he met other immigrants who were facing similar challenges. They became close
friends and studied together, supporting each other through the ups and downs of learning a new language. Over time, Mohamed’s English skills improved dramatically. He was able to hold conversations with strangers, order food al restaurants, and even understand complicated lectures at school.
One day, he decided to return to the store where he had his first frustrating experience. This time, he confidently ordered a chocolate ice cream in a cup, without any mistakes. The woman at the counter smiled and handed him his dessert, and for a moment, Mohamed felt a sense of accomplishment. He realized that making mistakes was an essential part of learning and growing. And even though he had faced challenges, he had never given up. Mohamed knew that there were still many more adventures waiting for him in America. But he was ready for them, armed with his newfound confidence and skills. And as he looked out the window of the store, he felt excited about the possibilities that lay ahead.
