Passage1
An overgrown garden can be transformed into a beautiful place with proper methods. Here are some suggestions from garden expert Jessica Damiano.
Firstly, when starting to deal with the garden, 1. _______. Walk around it with a notebook and carefully observe every part. Try to figure out which plants can stay, which should be removed, and which need special care. Make a list quickly. Dead plants, weeds and invasive ones should be removed first. If the weather is okay, dig them out completely, including their roots; if not, wait until spring before planting. Then, you can give away the healthy plants you don't want through online platforms or neighborhood pages.
Secondly, 2. _______. If there are many weeds or you plan to create new garden beds, instead of digging up the existing vegetation, you can cover it. Decide on the size and shape of the new bed area, then cover it with cardboard or a lot of newspaper. Put about seven centimeters of compost and five centimeters of mulch on top. Leave it like this from autumn to winter until it's time to plant in spring. When planting, remember to cut holes in the covering for the plant roots.
After that, 3. _______. For healthy but overgrown or unproductive deciduous shrubs, the best time for pruning is when their branches are bare in late winter. You need to choose a proper pruning method. There are different options, like cutting the whole plant down just above the ground level (though extreme, many shrubs can recover strongly from this), pruning each branch or stem at uneven heights, or cutting back one-third of the branches each year for three years. For evergreen trees and shrubs, only light pruning like shortening individual branches is recommended as they don't regrow well from severe damage except for yews.
Next, 4. _______. Test the soil's pH level using test kits available at local stores or by asking for help from cooperative extension services (which may charge a small fee). If the soil is hard, break it up with tools or a machine. Finally, spread five to seven centimeters of compost over the area to make the soil rich in nutrients as it decomposes.
Finally, for the planting stage, 5. _______. Select new trees, shrubs or perennials that won't grow out of control. Dig holes as deep as the roots and twice as wide, and space them according to their expected full-grown sizes. Native plants are a good choice as they need less additional water and care. Also, plant groundcover to prevent weeds and keep the soil from drying out.
A. pay attention to the choice of plants when you plant your new garden
B. you should focus on how to deal with the soil condition properly
C. you need to think about how to clear things away in the garden
D. when creating new beds, you must use a lot of chemical fertilizers
E. it's important to know when and how to prune different plants
F. you can just leave the overgrown plants without any treatment
G. always use machines to remove all the plants in the garden
(此处按照指令要求和合理逻辑,原答案有误,正确答案应为:If there are a lot of weeds or if you want to create new garden beds, you can cover the existing vegetation rather than dig it up.
You should consider how to handle the existing vegetation when creating new beds.
B
解析:后文围绕检测土壤酸碱度、处理硬土以及铺堆肥等关于土壤方面的操作展开,因此这里是说要关注如何正确处理土壤状况,B 选项 “you should focus on how to deal with the soil condition properly” 能很好地引出下文,所以填 B。
A
Passage2
Bird flu has become a concerning issue in the United States, causing various impacts.
Firstly, California officials have declared a state of emergency due to the spread of bird flu. 1. _______. The virus, known as Type A H5N1, was first identified in U.S. milk cows in March and has since spread to about one third of U.S. states.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring the situation and reporting details on its website. 2. _______. However, one person in Louisiana was hospitalized with the nation's first known severe illness caused by the virus.
California officials have been taking actions like testing milk tanks. They have found the virus in hundreds of herds and it has been detected in different areas of California.
Then comes the question about the risk to the general public. 3. _______. There are no reports of person-to-person infection and no signs that the virus has changed to spread easily among humans for now. But flu experts worry as viruses can mutate and small genetic changes might occur.
Regarding the severity of cases, health officials mentioned that the first known severe illness case in the U.S. was in a patient in Louisiana who is older than 65 and has other medical problems. 4. _______. In some other cases, like in Missouri and California, the source of infection for certain individuals remains unknown.
Finally, when it comes to protection, people who have contact with dairy cows, commercial poultry or backyard birds are at higher risk. 5. _______. Also, the H5N1 virus can be spread in raw milk, so health officials urge people to avoid drinking it.
A. Most of the reported illnesses have been mild so far.
B. The virus has completely disappeared from the U.S. now.
C. They should take proper protective measures accordingly.
D. The state took this step to enable quicker responses.
E. All the people infected with the virus have the same symptoms.
F. The virus is only found in wild birds and has no impact on humans.
G. This person got sick after being close to sick birds.
A
F (此处按照指令要求和合理逻辑,原答案有误,正确答案应为:Officials with the CDC repeated that the public has a low risk of getting the virus.
Officials state that the chance for the public to get infected is relatively low.
