As it moves across central Italy, an old train pulling carriages from the 1930s and 1950s crosses the forests of the Majella National Park and the Abruzzo highlands. The Park Railway, traveling through valleys and tunnels and over old bridges, offers visitors a view of small, rural and hidden villages in the country.
It was the first of some 1,000 kilometers of rail line to have re-opened under a project called “Timeless tracks”, which aims to take visitors to forgotten parts of Italy instead of the popular cities. The tracks have lived through different eras. They were mistakenly considered unproductive during the 1960s and 1970s but are now once again of value.
Norma Pagiotti, a 28-year-old traveler from Florence, said, “People are used to cities and places, like Florence, that everyone knows. But then there are other areas that need to be discovered. This is the right kind of tourism that does not destroy the reality of places.”
Caterina Quaranta, from southern Italy, used the term “nostalgic” to describe riding the train. “The train reminds me of my youth and the things of the past, which were simpler. But now everything is fast, short-lived,” Quaranta said.
After climbing up almost 1,000 meters in altitude, the train’s first stop is in Palena, a hill-top town known for its beautiful views over the national park. Traditional folk music accompanies people getting off the train, with local foods such as lamb skewers and soft pancakes and products by local artisans awaiting them at the station.
“The train financially helps several small towns around here.” said Gino Toppi, 60, as he helped his wife with the food stand in the small station. His village has long lost population due to the declining birth rate and younger people leaving for the bigger cities.
4 What can we learn about the Park Railway from the passage
A. It runs through the big cities of central Italy. B. It uses the new carriages rebuilt in old style.
C. It connects many tiny countryside villages. D. It covers a long distance of 1,000 kilometers.
5. What is the purpose of the project of “Timeless tracks”
A. To reevaluate old railroads of all ages. B. To prove the old railway unproductive.
C. To build new railway to every part of Italy. D. To develop the less visited parts of Italy.
6. What does the underlined word “nostalgic” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Feeling a strong dislike. B. Longing for the past time.
C. Causing great worry. D. Having pleasant relaxation.
7. What current benefit will the railway bring to the villagers along the way
A. The economic support. B. The increasing birth rate.
C. The young’s settlement. D. The life style of big cities.

From its source in Burgundy, the Seine flows 483 miles to reach the sea, with the capital sitting nearly in the middle. The River’s Parisian map has changed over time, its course changed by floods. The city’s Latin motto, “Fluctuat nec mergitur — swayed by the waves but does not sink,” recalls these historical floods, and Paris’s struggle in dealing with them.
Bathed in myth and memory, the Seine is the lifeblood of the city that started on its banks. Along this “main street”, as Napoleon called it, Parisian landmarks are on proud display, looking magnificent and great. It’s so central to the city’s existence that building numbers are linked to the river: Those on vertical (垂直的) streets begin their numbering closest to the Seine, while on parallel streets building numbers rise in the direction of the waterflow.
“For Parisians, there is a strong historical and visceral (发自肺腑的) attachment to the river,” says Pierre Rabadan, the deputy mayor of Paris. For centuries, life was lived on the river. The Seine’s banks were a gathering place for work and leisure: Laundresses washed clothes, dockers unloaded cargo, merchants hawked their goods, and people sunbathed and swam.
But a different approach to urban planning in the 20th century began to separate the populace (民众) from the river. In the 1960s, highways were constructed directly on the water’s edge. The ports even changed into parking lots.
The tide turned in 2013 when the city government decided to pedestrianize the motorway on the Left Bank. Cyclists and walkers returned to the ports, enjoying new installations such as climbing walls and floating gardens. A riverside park on the Right Bank’s motorway followed in 2016.
“We are now trying to reconnect and recover the Seine, what’s historically been a water ecological passageway in a city that’s extremely crowded.” says Rabadan. “We want to bring life back to the Seine.”
8. What does the Seine mean to Paris according to passage
A. The life-giving force. B. The largest landmark.
C. The source of industry. D. The street in memory.
9. How are the building numbers set in streets parallel to the Seine
A. The numbers rise around the “main street”.
B. The numbers increase in the direction of flow.
C. The farther south, the bigger the numbers.
D. The further away the Seine, the smaller the numbers.
10. What did the government do with the River Seine in the 20th century
A. Reducing Parisians’ attachment to the river.
B. Forbidding locals to work and relax on the banks.
C. Establishing public transport facilities along the river.
D. Pedestrianizing the motorway on the banks of the river.
11. What does Rabadan think of the ideal River Seine
A. A place where people can do sports.
B. A place with many modern facilities.
C. A place without water transportation.
D. A place people live in harmony with nature.
D
Take a walk down any major beach and it likely won’t be long before you see some abandoned rubbish which eventually makes their way into the ocean where it degrades over decades or even centuries. For the most part, spotting all that garbage still requires eyes and a fair deal of walking. But that could one day change thanks to a new satellite imaging technique.
A team developed a new tool that highlights unique spectral characters in plastics, which could accurately identify plastic items on beaches and tell them from sand, water, and plants.
Satellite imagery has, for years, been used to help scientists identify plastics floating in the ocean. This process works relatively well for identifying large pieces of plastic in the water, but it’s far less effective at spotting plastics on beaches. Coastal plastics often mix in or is partially buried by sand which makes spotting it much more difficult.
The team created a new spectral index, the Beached Plastic Debris Index (BPDI), which looks for patterns of reflected light from plastics. To test their new tool, the researchers collected various types of plastic trash that would likely be found on a beach. They finally settled on 14 different plastic targets and placed them 3.7 meters apart from each other on a beach in Victoria, Australia.
Once the plastics were in place, the satellite flew far overhead and took a series of photos. Researchers applied their index to the images and compared them to three other already-developed indices intended for detecting plastics, two for plastics on land and one for objects floating in the ocean. The BPDI index well outperformed the other three indices in terms of accuracy. The other three generally struggled to identify plastics and, in some cases, would even misidentify shadows as trash. Still, the BPDI index wasn’t perfect. In particular, the study notes it was difficult to identify transparent and translucent polymers like plastic water bottles and bags.
Looking to the future, the researchers want to move these findings out of limited test environments and into the real world. That could mean partnering with other organizations specializing in coastal plastic removal to use their satellite imagery technique.
12. How do people mostly find and remove garbage on beaches
A. By the plastics spectrum. B. Through satellite images.
C. By means of human labor. D. Through natural degradation.
13. Why is it harder for satellite imagery to identify plastics on beaches
A. Because they are shaped in large pieces.
B. Because they are mixed with other objects.
C. Because they have all become transparent.
D. Because they have unique spectral characters.
14. What is the disadvantage of the BPDI
A. It often misidentifies shadows as plastic garbage.
B. It is intended for only detecting the plastics on land.
C. It only works on the light reflected off 14 types of plastics.
D. It can only be used to detect the non-transparent plastics.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. The Beached Plastic Debris Index
B. A New Technique for Identifying Plastics on Beaches
C. A New Tool to Identify New Light Spectrum
D. New Satellite Techniques for Ocean Exploration

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my husband passed away last year, my world turned upside down. Richard and I had been together for over forty years, and suddenly, there was an unbearable blank where he used to be. So, when my son, James, and his wife, Natalie, invited me to live with them for a while, I wasn’t about to refuse. I think being with the grandkids will be healing.
They welcomed me with open arms, making me feel like part of their daily life. They insisted that they wanted to help me through this difficult time and when I moved in, I only took the essentials. The rest of my things were locked 30 minutes away at my home, locking away the memories of a life shared with Richard.
From the beginning, there was simply one rule for the kids and myself: “Please, all three of you, stay out of the basement (地下室) ,” James had said when we were sitting for dinner, his tone was gentle but firm. “There are some repairs being done, and it’s really dusty and messy down there. We don’t want any of you to get sick or hurt. Understood ”
The boys, John, 6, and Eric, 4, nodded. I understood James’ concern, too. I agreed without giving it much thought. It wasn’t like I had any reason to go down there anyway.
Living with them was an adjustment. John and Eric were everything I needed to keep me distracted while my heart healed and grew with love for my grandchildren. We had also gotten into a new routine, where every evening, we’d gather in the living room for story time. Nothing delighted me more than watching their eyes light up as I read to them.
We’d been reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for a few days now, and it had quickly become a favorite for them. One evening, I turned to the next chapter, and as I read about Harry discovering the hidden entrance to the chamber, Eric suddenly piped up, “Grandma! We have a Chamber of Secrets too! In the basement!”
注意:
1.续写词数应150左右;

【答案】One possible version:
I paused, glancing down at him unbelievably. Eric said he would show it to me. Before I could stop him, he jumped off the couch and grabbed my hand, tugging me toward the basement door. I called that we were not supposed to be going down there. “There it is!” Eric exclaimed, pointing toward a door hidden behind a large sheet of plastic. I was curious and reached for the door handle. The door swung open with a soft creak, revealing a room that took my breath away.
The room was a perfect copy of my own bedroom back home. The familiar wallpaper and the same pattern of the bed were identical. But what truly made my heart sing was the photograph: Richard and I on our wedding day, smiling and young, full of life. I stepped backward, tears streaming down my face as a thousand memories flooded back. James and Natalie rushed down the stairs, followed by John. James explained softly that they wanted to surprise me and didn’t want me to go back to my old house. They wanted me to have a space here that felt like home. I hugged them and said in tears that I wanted them, too.
