That afternoon I received just one of the daily notes I’d been getting from my kindergarten son’s principal at school, complaining about his bad behavior at school. I had a heart-to-heart discussion with my husband. Despite my unfamiliarity with homeschooling and the lack of confidence in my ability to set it right, I told him that I could try homeschooling our son in the hope that it would better prepare him for public school. He agreed, though we were both concerned that if we waited a full year, he’d fall behind academically.
More than a few mothers I knew were homeschooling their children. I called a few of them and asked lots of questions. When voicing my concerns about my teaching ability, one mother asked me an unexpected question, “Do you love your kids ” She then told me that loving them was all it took to be an effective homeschooling parent. That simple statement gave me the courage to try.
Upon the advice of my fellow homeschooling mothers, I ordered a preschool program that centered around singing. I found the curriculum very easy to teach. Surprisingly, it was a lot of fun! I started to realize that he just needed attention. When he got my undivided attention, he suddenly became calmer than ever before.
Around the same time, my husband took a job as a traveling carpenter, and he’d be gone nine to ten weeks at a time. That’s not what a mother of four young kids wants to hear! Then, I had a brainstorm. I could homeschool all four kids, and we traveled with him some of the time. It would help us spend more time together, and it might just work.
We bought an older motor home with all the basics: full kitchen, bathroom, and more. It even had beds for the kids. Over the next few years, we traveled everywhere my husband went for work. I learned how to put together unit studies that worked for all grade levels. I taught science, social studies, and language arts to all the kids at once. I made assignments according to their grade levels.
