George Schaller is a biologist. He spends most of his life travelling in the wild to study unique wild animals, including the Bengal tiger, the East African lion, the Tibetan antelope, and the panda.
Schaller’s first experience abroad was said to be in Africa in 1959, to study the mountain gorilla (大猩猩) there. After that, he never stopped studying wild animals. Even when he was 82, he still continued his research: he went to South America to study wild species (物种).
But Schaller said he had spent more time in China than in any other country and that he loved working in China. After his book The Giant Pandas of Wolong came out years ago, he left the study of the species to some Chinese scientists. Yet he returned to Changtang, Guangxi year after year to study other wild species there.
When Schaller studied wild animals, he also tried to call on people to protect these species. “Few lawmakers or members of the public read scientific papers or care about them,” he pointed out. So besides writing scientific papers and putting forward proposals to governments, he also tried to present his findings to the public by means of popular science books. The public also responded to the suffering of large and lovely wild animals. “That, in turn, provides protection for all the other species and the habitats (栖息地) in that area,” he said. And he’s glad to find the population of mountain gorillas has recovered and that China has created many national parks to protect animals like pandas.
“As far as I’m concerned, the value of my effort lies in leaving behind young biologists who have worked with me and I will continue training the young,” Schaller said. “I get cheered up all the time. I have seen the progress.”
4. Why did Schaller often go back to China
A. To carry on with his research. B. To enjoy the natural views.
C. To collect materials for his book. D. To work with Chinese scientists.
5. Why did Schaller publish his findings in popular books
A. To make himself better known to the public.
B. To draw people’s attention to protecting wild animals.
C. To discuss proposals for further scientific research.
D. To present the harm human activity does to the wildlife.
6. What does Schaller think is the most meaningful part of his work
A. Easing the suffering of certain wild animals.
B. Having young scientists follow in his footsteps.
C. Building more national parks in more countries.
D. Making the population of mountain gorillas recover.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Schaller
A. Positive and adventurous. B. Generous and creative.
C. Responsible and tireless. D. Concentrated and talented.

Workers in Botswana recently discovered a diamond (钻石) using X-ray technology that is designed to find large, high-value diamonds. It is the second largest in mining (采矿) history. The country’s president Masisi showed the large stone to the public at a celebration last week.
The 2,492-carat diamond is the largest that has been discovered since 1905. The diamond weighs around a half-kilogram. Masisi expressed his surprise at the diamond’s weight and told the gathering, “I am lucky to have seen it in my time.”
Lucara Diamond, a Canadian mining company, found the pany officials said it was too early to appraise the diamond or decide how it would be sold. A smaller uncut diamond from the same mine in Botswana sold for a record $63 million in 2016.
The weight would make it the largest diamond found in 119 years. It is also the second-largest diamond ever mined, after the Cullinan Diamond. That 3,106-carat diamond was found in South Africa in 1905. The Cullinan Diamond was the source (来源) of several famous cut diamonds, including some among the British Crown Jewels.
The Karowe Mine has produced four other diamonds over 1,000 carats in the last ten years. Before this
discovery, the Sewelo Diamond, which was found at the Karowe Mine in 2019, was recognized as the second-largest mined diamond in the world at 1,758 carats. French business Louis Vuitton bought the diamond. The sale price was not known to the public.
A British businessman bought the 1,111-carat Lesedi La Rona Diamond, also from Botswana’s Karowe Mine, for $53 million in 2017. A Karowe diamond named The Constellation is the holder of the record $63 million sales price.
Diamonds come into being when carbon atoms (碳原子) are pushed close together by strong stress conditions deep underground. These extreme conditions can include high temperatures and pressures, often found in volcanic rocks. Over millions of years, the carbon atoms respace themselves into the crystalline structure (晶体结构) we recognize as diamonds, which are known for their hardness and shine.
8. What does the underlined word “appraise” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Divide. B. Store. C. Contribute. D. Value.
9. What happened to the Cullinan Diamond
A. It was cut into several parts. B. It was sold to Louis Vuitton.
C. It was given away to a museum. D. It was collected by a British businessman.
10. Which of the following used to be the second-largest mined diamond
A. The Constellation Diamond. B. The Cullinan Diamond.
C. The Lesedi La Rona Diamond. D. The Sewelo Diamond.
11. What about diamonds does the last paragraph focus on
A. Their hardness. B. Their history. C. Their formation. D. Their function

Preschool children’s play involving (涉及) iPads is less imaginative compared to their play involving physical toys. This is shown in a new study by Uppsala University. The result goes against the long held belief that new technologies would make children more creative. “Although the study is quite small, it shows that we should perhaps be careful about using touch screens with preschool children,” notes Robin Samuel at Uppsala University.
During the study, almost one hundred play activities were compared in two groups of preschool children, 2-year-olds and 4-to 5-year-olds, 30 children at two preschools took part in the study during the preschool’s free play time, i.e. play without much involvement from teachers. Free play takes up about 57 percent of children’s time at preschool.
The researchers recorded videos of the children playing. After that, they watched them and checked the
patterns (模式) in the children’s play - what the children did when they played with iPads and when they played with physical toys such as toy bricks and dress-up clothes. The study showed that play involving iPads was more exploratory (探究的) but in short of simulation (模拟) and imagination, which may hardly leave children with the opportunity to experiment with new ideas.
The courses for preschool, known in Swedish as Lpfo 18, state that preschool teachers must take responsibility for making sure that every child can use digital tools in a way that helps with development and learning. As a result, iPads are commonly used in the country’s preschools and are a part of many children’s everyday lives. Both educators and researchers have seen the opportunities afforded by new technologies.
“Our results were not only clear but also surprising. We hope that our results are meaningful and helpful to preschool teachers, parents and others who stay with children and technology in day-to-day life. While there are possible learning mechanisms (机制) for exploratory play using digital devices, there should be an awareness (意识) that new technologies don’t always mean better,” notes Samuel.
12. What can be known about the study
A. It focuses on new technologies.
B. It challenges the traditional view.
C. It involved two groups with 30 children in each.
D. It was done under the guidance of the teachers.
13. How did the researchers carry out the study
A. By introducing children to new play patterns.
B. By interviewing preschool teachers and parents.
C. By recording and comparing children’s play activities.
D. By setting up different play environments and watching children’s behaviours.
14. What’s Samuel’s attitude towards the preschoolers’ using digital devices
A. Supportive. B. Unclear. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Will screen time kill kids’ creativity B. Who benefits more from technology
C. What kinds of toys are proper for kids D. Will technology become more influential

10-year-old Jacky was a boy with a kind heart. He had a lot of friends but never really had a “best friend” until he met Simon-a new boy in his class who was in a wheelchair. None of the children in the class liked to play with Simon. He was left out during games, and nobody showed any interest in befriending him except Jacky. So the two soon became good friends.
Jacky lost his parents in a car accident at an early age. It was his grandma who raised him. They lived a hard life. Jacky promised that he would do anything to make his grandma proud and happy. To help Grandma with her medical bills and rent, Jacky always walked dogs or helped people with housework in exchange for money. However, the money he saved was far from enough to meet their needs. Instead of getting discouraged, Jacky kept going and the only other person who comforted him was Simon.
The two boys often went into the woods near their school to watch birds. It was their favorite hobby. One afternoon on their last day of school before the summer vacation, they went there again. Jacky pushed Simon’s wheelchair, imagining how exciting their adventure would be. They talked and laughed all the way into the woods. Suddenly, the boys had difficulty moving forward. One of the wheels hit a big stone. The wheelchair was broken, making it unable to move. What’s worse, deep in the woods, they couldn’t find anyone to turn to.
“Oops! How can we head back We’re stuck!” cried Simon. “Don’t be afraid. Wait, and let me think,” said Jacky. However, the weather started to change. The boys could see dark clouds across the sky and hear deafening thunder (雷声), which worried them. Jacky wanted to run but could not leave Simon behind.

【答案】One possible version:
Dear friends,
When it comes to the theme of “Health or figure, which comes first ”, I put health first. The reasons are as follows.
As the saying goes, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Choosing health means embracing a lifestyle that nurtures our bodies and minds. It involves making conscious decisions about what we eat, how we exercise, and how we manage stress. Moreover, when we focus on nurturing our body rather than sculpting it into a particular shape, we learn to appreciate our unique strengths and accept our imperfections, which leads to a more positive body image and a greater sense of self-confidence.
Thank you.
第二节(满分25分)

【答案】One possible version:
“I can carry you on my back. Trust me!” Jacky said. However, Jacky failed on his first try because Simon was too heavy for him. After thinking for a moment, he adjusted his position, and eventually managed to lift Simon onto his back. Stopping for a rest every few minutes, he made it to the main road. Unfortunately, there were still no people or vehicles in sight. With the only thought of taking his friend home safely, Jacky gathered all his strength to keep on moving forward. An hour later, the boys finally got to Simon’s house.
Simon’s parents felt a sense of relief (宽慰) when seeing the two boys home. After Simon explained to his parents what had happened and how hard Jacky tried to carry him home, they were greatly impressed by Jacky’s bravery and kindness. Learning that Jacky and his grandma had financial difficulties, Simon’s parents decided to offer a hand and visit them regularly with daily necessities. Since then, the two boys have been in a closer bond and become a rainbow in each other’s clouds. It has taught Jacky that only after going through thick and thin together do best friends appear.
