Jennifer Keelan was a young girl who had dreams of one day attending college and living a satisfactory life. At age 2, Jennifer was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (脑瘫), leaving her using a wheelchair. Jennifer was a bright and courageous girl, but when she attempted to attend school with her friends, she was sent to separate classes for students with disabilities, regardless of talent. She found herself unable to attend some school functions, use transit systems and access government buildings. Jennifer accepted the limitations of her physical life, but not the limitations of the physical world around her.
Jennifer became active in campaigning for the Americans with Disabilities Act. She engaged in peaceful protests and, at age 7, was arrested in Montreal, a moment in history that shocked North America.
At age 8, Jennifer traveled to Washington, D.C. The shy, yet determined little girl caught the attention of the country when she climbed up the Capitol steps. It worked. Jennifer met with Congress, and President George H. W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law.
Jennifer remains an activist today, making sure all people with disabilities are treated fairly and have equal access to public places, schools and businesses. The only barriers that remain are those of view.
Jennifer wants all of us to know that physical disabilities are not a barrier to friendship, career opportunities or love. She graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in family and human development. She is now 39 years old and still sharing the message of inclusivity (包容性) . For her, like all of us, making a difference begins one step at a time, no matter how hard it is. She remains a lifelong activist for the disability rights movement.
24. What prevented Jennifer studying with her friends
A. Her serious illness. B. Her low intelligence.
C. Her born language barrier. D. Her poor learning ability.
25. What made North America amazed about Jennifer
A. Her helping the disabled. B. Her being sent to prison.
C. Her entering the Capitol alone. D. Her being elected as president.
26. What happened due to Jennifer’s effort
A. The law of the United State changed a lot. B. Bush met the representatives of the disabled
C. Arizona State University accepted the disabled. D. The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed.
27. What is the best title of this text
A. A Girl Managed to Enter the Congress B. A Girl Makes a Difference to the Country
C. A Girl Succeeded in Attending the College D. A Girl Struggles for the Rights of the Disabled

A new study has found that including climate impact labels (标签) on a fast food menu influenced participants food choices in favor of more climate-friendly items.
Study lead author Julia Wolfson, associate professor in the Department of International Health at the Bloomberg School and her co-authors wanted to test how labeling climate change impacts of fast-food menu items might lead people to choose less red meat. Eating too much red meat has been linked to many health problems. Eating less red meat would also help lower greenhouse gas emissions (排放).
More than 5,000 participants were shown a sample menu and asked to choose a single item for dinner. One group of participants received a menu with non-red meat items such as chicken sandwiches labeled “low climate impact”. Another group received a menu with red meat items — burgers labeled “high climate impact”. A third control group received menus without climate labels.
Both the high and low climate impact labels markedly reduced red meat choices compared to the control group. Menus with a high climate impact label on burgers increased non-beef choices by 23 percent compared to the control group. Menus that included low climate impact labels increased non-beef choices, such as a chicken sandwich or a salad, by about 10 percent more participants than those in the control group. “These results suggest that menu labeling, particularly labels warning that an item has high climate impact, can be an effective strategy for encouraging more sustainable (可持续的) food choices in a fast food setting”, says Wolfson.
While encouraging on the whole, the results suggest that positive "low climate impact" labels are less effective in encouraging sustainable food choices compared to “high climate impact” labels. At the same time, climate labels may have the unwanted side effect of making a choice seem healthier than it actually is.
“An undeserved health halo (光环) given to unhealthy menu items could encourage people to overeat them.” Wolfson says, “So we have to look for labeling strategies that create ‘win-wins’ for encouraging both more sustainable and healthy choices.”
28. What’s the aim of the new study
A. To encourage food choices without climate labels.
B. To discover the impact of climate labels on fast food choices.
C. To find out the connection between red meat and health problems.
D. To decide the best method for labeling food products in general.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The process of the study. B. The results of the study.
C. The importance of the study. D. The influence of the study.
30. What side effect could climate labels cause
A. They may cause confusion among consumers.
B They could make a food item seem healthier than it is.
C. They might result in people consuming more red meat.
D. They may lead to an increase in vegetarian choices.
31. What is Wolfson’s attitude towards climate impact labels on food
A. Supportive. B. Unfavorable. C. Indifferent. D. Cautious.
D
As far as we know batteries are playing an important role in our life. We couldn’t live without batteries. Why so Batteries provide power for anything from small sensors to large systems. While scientists are finding ways to make them smaller but even more powerful, problems can arise when these batteries are much larger and heavier than the devices themselves. University of Missouri (MU) researchers are developing a nuclear energy source that is smaller, lighter and more efficient.
“To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density (密度)”, said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. “The radioisotope (放射性同位素) battery can provide power density that is much higher than chemical batteries.”
Kwon and his research team have been working on building a small nuclear battery, presently the size and thickness of a penny, intended to power various micro / nanoelectromechanreal systems (M/NEMS). Although nuclear batteries can cause concerns, Kwon said they are safe.
“People hear the word ‘nuclear’ and think of something very dangerous,” he said, “However, nuclear power sources have already been safely powering a variety of devices, such as pace-makers, space satellites and underwater systems.”
His new idea is not only in the battery’s size, but also in its semiconductor (半导体). Kwon’s battery uses a liquid semiconductor rather than a solid semiconductor.
“The key part of using a radioactive battery is that when you harvest the energy, part of the radiation energy can damage the lattice structure (晶体结构) of the solid semiconductor,” Kwon said, “By using a liquid semiconductor, we believe we can minimize that problem.”
Together with J. David Robertson, chemistry professor and associate director of the MU Research Reactor, Kwon is working to build and test the battery. In the future, they hope to increase the battery’s power, shrink its size and try with various other materials. Kwon said that battery could be thinner than the thickness of human hair.
32. According to paragraph 1 and 2, we can learn that ________.
A. Batteries can only power small sensors.
B. The larger batteries are, the more power they can provide.
C. Certain methods with high energy density can provide power abundantly.
D. Jae Kwon is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU.
33. Which of the following statement is true of Jae Kwon
A. He teaches chemistry at MU.
B. He developed a chemical battery.
C. He is working on a nuclear energy source.
D. He made a breakthrough in computer engineering.
34. Jae Kwon gave examples in Paragraph 4 ________.
A. to show chemical batteries are widely applied.
B. to introduce nuclear batteries can be safely used.
C. to describe a nuclear-powered system.
D. to introduce various energy sources.
35. The text is most probably a ________.
A. science news report B. book review
C. newspaper advertisement D. science fiction story

Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m Li Hua, an exchange student of our school. Knowing you’re planning to start some school clubs about Chinese culture, I’m writing to make a suggestion.
My suggestion is that a Chinese calligraphy club should be established. For one reason, Chinese calligraphy is a form of art with a long history, standing for the civilization of ancient China. For another, the club may attract a great number of students from different countries, as there is no language barrier to appreciate art.
I would be grateful for your taking my advice into consideration. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
