One of the improv (即兴表演) classes I attended regularly was taught by Jim Cranna every Saturday afternoon. Sometimes, as many as twenty-five to sixty-plus folks showed up. Jim made sure to fit everyone in so they could improve their skills. The class lasted for three hours. The usual cast of comic actors played improv comedy games. And we would go to the nearest mini market and get a snack or coffee during breaks.
One day, three of us were standing outside the building, when Robin Williams — an internationally famous actor and comic walked by, enjoying the fresh bay pletely frozen, my fellow comics couldn’t summon up the courage to just say “hi” to Robin, who was with a friend. I froze for a moment, but then I composed myself.
I told them, “Hey, if you guys can’t handle it, then I will ask him to come and join us for the second half of class.” I could hear them mumble under their breath, “Yeah, sure, right. You’re going to ask Robin Williams to come to our comedy class. Good luck with that one!”
So I went up to Robin and his friend and asked him to join us. “We’re having an improv comedy class. We’re on break now, but we would be most humbled and honored if you would join us for the second half of the class.” Robin looked directly in my eyes and said with little hesitation, “Okay.” It was like a grown-up child being asked to come and play. With that, he and his friend followed me up to the class.
When he saw Robin, Jim said, “Oh my goodness, look who Micheline is bringing to class.” Jim’s eyes were all in astonishment and delight. “Why, it’s Robin Williams!” Robin and his friend stayed the rest of the class and at the end of the class, Robin and Jim performed a skit (滑稽短剧). We actually watched him shape-shift as he prepared physically and mentally for his made-up character. He gave it his all. It was truly magical.
What a delight for all of us that Saturday afternoon! All I know is that if I hadn’t mustered up the courage to ask Robin to join us, none of us would have had that experience.
4. What does the underlined word “compose” mean in paragraph 2
A. Look down. B. Calm down. C. Make up. D. Pick up.

6. What can be inferred from the text
A. It was the author’s bravery that moved Robin Williams.
B. Jim Cranna was waiting for Robin Williams to come to the class.
C. Robin Williams gave a lecture on playing improv comedy games.
D. Micheline’s friends didn’t have the nerve to invite Robin Williams.
7. What kind of person was Robin Williams most likely to be
A. Renowned but approachable. B. Popular but humble.
C. Respected but casual. D. Strict but generous.

Uncertainty pops up frequently in conversations. The pandemic, and the growing climate disasters heighten our awareness of our inability to control many current challenges. No wonder we’re invaded by anxiety and isolation. We know there are stress-reduction techniques like yoga and exercise. Another much-overlooked one that restores sense of well-being is poetry.
Poetry reconnects us with the beauty of the world, while also naming its difficulties. Rather than dismissing hardships, poetry reminds us that others have also lost a loved one, experienced disappointments — have suffered as we now suffer. Poetry allows us to identify our personal confusions, breaks our feeling of isolation, and confirms our sense of belonging. Poetry leads us toward wisdom and acceptance.
Science agrees. The Arts & Mind Lab at Johns Hopkins University offers convincing evidence that poetry is good for our health. A study from2013 in Philippines showed that guided poetry writing sessions significantly lessened depression in a group of mistreated adolescents. Written eight hundred years ago, the poem The Guest House invites us to view life’s experiences and the feelings that arise from them as temporary visitors in the “guest house” of self. With patience and compassion, the author Jalal al-Din Rumi advises us to recognize that even negative moods are precious teachers for our growth.
Think of poetry as an entrance to a timeless place where we find comfort, companionship, connection, wisdom, and healing. Poetry names the disconnects as well, where we have gone blind to threats and personal sorrows that threaten to overwhelm us. With its precision of language, and its naming of experience, poetry, in a small space, usually one page, packs a strong hit. Entering a poem, readers can sense painful experiences are re-framed and can be given a new understanding by a poem. That’s because poetry reflects a rich mix of the sweetness and bitterness in life. It refreshes our minds and offers invented landscapes of imagery. For your own peace of mind, I encourage you to take up a friendship with poetry.
8. What does the underlined word “dismiss” probably mean in Paragraph 2
A. Reflect on. B. Leave behind. C. Get through. D. Suffer from.
9. What does Rumi suggest readers do in The Guest House
A. View ourselves as temporary guests.
B. Take an active part in experiencing hardships.
C. Ignore negative feelings to avoid sadness.
D. Embrace downsides with optimistic attitudes.
10. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Poems make readers turn a blind eye to threats and sorrows.
B. Poems can only have either sweet themes or bitter themes.
C. Poems possess overwhelming power despite limited lines.
D. Poems reshape painful experiences and restrict our minds.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Techniques Help Reduce Stress. B. Poetry Facilitates Friendship.
C. Hardships Benefit our Growth. D. Poetry Promotes our Well-being.
D
We are all guilty of grabbing our phones and scrolling through social media when times get boring. Psychologists have noted in numerous studies over the past decade that individuals engage in social media and other digital media to escape boredom. However, the same studies reveal that consuming such media can actually increase boredom in individuals.
That result may be a product of constantly “switching” between different content online, the endless pursuit of the next piece of media to alleviate present boredom.
To investigate the role that fast- forwarding and switching videos has in boredom, Dr Katy Tam, the lead author of the research and researchers performed two experiments on about 1,200 people. In the first trial, the study participants had two viewing experiences. They both watched a 10- minute video without the option to switch or fast- forward and then had a 10- minute period where they could switch between seven 5- minute videos. In the second experiment, participants watched a 10- minute video in one round and in the other round were allowed to fast- forward or rewind through a 50- minute video.
Participants predicted they would be less bored with the option to switch or fast- forward for both experiments but reported afterward that they found watching one video all the way through to be more engaging, satisfying and meaningful.
Tam said boredom was closely linked to attention. “We feel bored when there’s a gap between how engaged we are and how engaged we want to be,” she said. “When people keep switching through videos, they become less engaged with the videos and they are looking for something more interesting. This can lead to increased feelings of
boredom.”
Finally, said Tam, it could be worth taking your time before hitting the fast- forward or skip buttons. “Our research shows that while people fast- forward or skip video s to avoid boredom, this behaviour can actually make them feel more bored,” she said. “Just as we pay for an immersive (沉浸式) experience in a movie theatre, enjoyment often comes from immersing ourselves in videos rather than swiping (滚屏) through them.”
12. What does the underlined word “alleviate” in paragraph 2mean
A. Ease. B. Understand. C. Define. D. Justify.
13. Tam’s study found that participants reported higher levels of boredom when ______.
A. the length of a video was too long. B. the video content was played repeatedly.
C. they switched between videos and within video. D. they watched the same video through to the end.
14. What did Tam present in paragraph 5
A. Ways of watching videos. B. The design of his experiment.
C. Examples of divided attention. D. The cause of people’s boredom.
15. What was Tam’s suggestion in the last paragraph
A. Pay for a viewing experience. B. Refer to the ratings before watching videos.
C Go to a cinema for an immersive experience. D. Stay focused on the content while watching videos.

Nature while beautiful, could also be unpredictable and merciless. But most importantly we bear in mind that in the darkest times, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, just like Mrs. Evans‘ cabin light.
One bright summer day, my friend Peter and I decided to venture into the unexplored trails of the Great Smoky Mountains. Blessed with rich biodiversity and fascinating landscapes, the national park seemed a perfect getaway. Little did we know that our casual hike would soon turn into an unexpected personal incident, forever engraved in our memories.
We set off early in the morning, equipped with our backpacks and a map that was supposed to guide us through the winding trails. The sun was up, casting long shadows on the forest floor as we set off on our journey. We trekked (艰难行走), laughed, and marveled at the beauty of nature around us.
As we trekked through the dense forests, taking in the natural wonders around us, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of adventure coursing through our veins. The trail was rugged and uneven, but we persevered through the challenging landscape.
Midway through our expedition, we stumbled upon a breathtaking waterfall, its glistening waters cascading down the rocks in a quiet and peaceful melody. We sat down by the water’s edge, taking a moment to get lost in the beauty of nature. The cool mist from the waterfall enveloped us, and we felt refreshed and energetic.
As the day wore on, we ventured deeper into the wilderness, eager to explore every corner of this natural paradise. We were so absorbed in the beauty of nature that just didn't notice our way and it seemed that we could not find the way back to the familiar part of the forest. Panicking, we scrambled to find our way back but the dense vegetation and winding trails only served to confuse us further. We tried to remember any possible signs that might lead us back, No sooner had we celebrated our return to the clear trails than something worse happened.

【答案】 Suddenly, the weather took an abrupt turn. Dark clouds shrouded the sky, and a heavy downpour ensued. The comforting forest sounds quickly proved a terrifying symphony of thunder and wind. The trail that was once so clear became a muddy mess, making it impossible to go on. We tried to consult our map, but it was too late; we got lost in the wildness. Hours passing, our attempts to find the trail turned out to be in vain. With the cold creeping in, despair started to set in.
Just when we were about to give up, a faint light flickered in the distance. Curiosity overpowered our fear, and we decided to follow it. When we drew nearer, we saw a small log cabin, lights shining from its windows. Knocking on the door, an elderly woman, Mrs. Evans, welcomed us with a warm smile. She was a retired ranger who had chosen to live her twilight years in the heart of the mountains. She offered us shelter for the night, and the next morning, guided us back to the main trail. This incident strengthened our friendship and taught us the importance of resilience and hope. The experience was beyond expectation, terrifying, but enlightening all the same.
