In her tiny Athens apartment, 93-year-old Ioanna Matsouka has knitted thousands of brightly colored scarves for children in need from Greece to Ukraine, and she has no plans to quit just yet. “Until I die, I will be knitting,” Matsouka says. Since she took up knitting in the 1990s, Matsouka has easily made over 3,000 scarves, her daughter estimates.
In the hallway by the door, shopping bags filled with her latest creations await their new home. A knitted blanket is thrown over the sofa where she spends her days.
Initially distributed to friends, the scarves were later contributed to children’s shelters across Greece as the stock expanded. Then, through acquaintances, they reached children in Bosnia and Ukraine. The latest batch of 70 went to a refugee camp near Athens this winter via the UN refugee agency.
Her daughter, Angeliki, narrates drawings and mails her mother has received over the years: “Thank you, be well, keep going. You gave joy to children, you gave joy to people.” That’s her only reward: a letter, a few words. Matsouka knits one scarf a day, now with small imperfections. Her vision is impaired and she suffers from severe facial pain, a condition known as trigeminal neuralgia (三叉神经痛). Angeliki says her mother is an example of resilience and optimism. Matsouka wakes up every morning, drinks a glass of milk, puts on her pearl earrings and gets to work. She takes a break for lunch and a nap, and then painstakingly knits into the night.
She may have even found the secret to a long life in it, she says. “It’s the happiness I get from giving.” she says, sitting beside a big blue bag brimming with yarn (纱线). “Until I die, I will be knitting,” Matsouka says. Her knitting needles click through her expert fingers, her nails painted red. “It brings me joy to share them.”
4. What did the scarves begin as
A. Presents to acquaintances.
B. Initiatives for fundraising.
C. Donation to a refugee camp.
D Stock for children’s shelters.
5. What can we learn about Matsouka from paragraph 4
A. She yields to her severely impaired vision.
B. She wakes up every morning due to facial pain.
C. She continues knitting despite her health challenges.
D. She is only rewarded with drawings from her daughter.
6. What does the underlined word “resilience” mean
A. Insistence. B. Ambition.
C. Generosity. D. Passion.
7. What message does the article mainly convey
A. The eye is bigger than the belly.
B. Giving is better than accepting.
C. An early bird catches the worm.
D. Time and tide wait for no man.

Have you ever joyously stepped out to your backyard garden, freshly made coffee in hand, only to find your attentively cared-for plants and herbs dying Was the soil too dry Did pests find their way in During times like these, some frustrated gardeners may wish their roses would just tell them what they need. A new project in the UK is trying to see if that concept can be demonstrated in the real world.
Next year, the Royal Horticultural Society in England will show an “intelligent garden” that uses an AI model to monitor the garden’s environment and inform gardeners when it needs care. Visitors can ask the AI-powered garden questions. The model could then respond with phrases like “I need a bit more water,” or “I could use a haircut” depending on data captured in the soil. Aside from the pleasant novelty of chatting with plants, the garden will provide visitors with a physical representation of the many ways Al and Internet of Things technologies could be used to enhance sustainability and conservation efforts
When the garden is uncovered, it will rely on a network of sensors nestled throughout the garden measuring environmental factors like soil moisture, and nutrient levels as well as wind and projected rainfall. All of that data is then sent to a specially designed AI model housed in a pavilion (亭子) at the back of the garden. The model can then analyze those factors and inform gardener of timely feeding, or watering.
Several currently available apps also use AI to help gardeners identify unknown plants by comparing a photo of them against a large online database. But as past reporting has shown, simply trusting an Al to tell you whether a plant of unknown origin is safe to eat isn’t wise, and could have dangerous results.
8. Why does the author put forward questions in the beginning
A. To arouse readers’ interest.
B. To frustrate the gardeners.
C. To introduce AI-powered garden.
D. To give garden-care instructions.
9. What may visitors do in the “intelligent garden”
A. Collect data from the soil.
B. Read novels to the plants.
C. Give presentations on physics.
D. Conduct talks with flowers.
10. What is the right process of managing the garden
① The model analyzes the data.
② Sensors send data to Al model.
③ AI model is built in the pavilion.
④ Sensors collect environmental factors.
⑤ Sensors are installed throughout the garden.
⑥ Gardeners are given clues to tend the plants.
A. ①⑤②⑥ B. ③④②⑤
C. ④②①⑥ D. ③⑤①④.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards using Al to help gardening
A. Ambiguous. B. Cautious.
C. Indifferent. D. Optimistic.
D
“Have you eaten yet ”, a familiar Chinese greeting, might be the title of this book, but for the author Cheuk Kwan-and for almost every restaurateur he interviews-food is only the entry point. Because “running a Chinese restaurant is the easiest path for new Chinese immigrants to integrate into the host society,” Kwan writes in his memoir.
We first met Noisy Jim who arrived in Vancouver at the age of 12. To gain Jim’s entry, his father obtained the identity papers of a dead Canadian resident named Chow Jim Kook, whose name Jim would keep for the rest of his life. For years, he laboured in the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant until he was called back to China to marry a woman. The couple returned to Canada to open their own Chinese cafe in a remote town, raised seven children and served egg rolls and chop suey (杂碎): food that was neither Canadian nor according to Jim, “what Chinese people eat.”
The trace of Jim’s life bears a striking resemblance to that of Maurice Soong, who helped at his father’s general store in San Fernando, before running a Chinese restaurant there with his new wife, who was married to him from his home village.
From the Arctic to Africa to the Amazon, perseverance, economic pragmatism (经济务实) and resourcefulness bind the lives of Chinese immigrant restaurateurs all over the world and inspire their diverse menus.
At its best, Kwan’s book reveals the ways in which diasporic (大移居的) Chinese restaurants are like test kitchens experimenting in opportunities for a better life, however cloudy that pursuit might be. As in the case of Jim and Maurice, many who venture on the immigration journey are children with little say in the matter.
Kwan’s book is a kind of love letter to his varied homes and a memorial to his journey through them, as reflected through the lives of faraway strangers. “To me, a home is about finding a community where you feel you belong,” Kwan writes toward the end.
12. What’s the role Chinese restaurants play in the immigrants’ lives
A. To provide a way to make a fortune.
B. To present authentic Chinese cuisine.
C. To blend immigrants into the local community.
D. To connect immigrants with their traditional culture.
13. What can be inferred from Noisy Jim’s experiences
A. He served traditional Canadian cuisine in his cafe.
B. He adopted a fake identity throughout his later life.
C. He was raised in Canada and always used his real name.
D. He settled in Canada and never returned to his hometown.
14. What’s the similarity between Jim and Maurice
A. They opened restaurants in their hometowns.
B. They lacked voice in the decision to immigrate.
C. They married women from their later residence.
D. They worked in general stores before marriage.
15. What might be the suitable title of this passage
A. Have you eaten yet
B. Immigration is a long way to go.
C. Opening restaurants helps make a fortune.
D. Chinese restaurants spread all over the world.

The Return of Blossom
I saw Mr. Darkin in the cow barn (牛棚) and went across to him. The farmer was a kind man but he always looked mournful, and this morning he looked sadder than ever.
I had come to examine a litter of pigs who had upset stomachs but Mr. Darkin seemed in no hurry to leave the barn. He was gazing at his old cow, Blossom.
“She’s got to go, Mr. Herriot.”
“Old Blossom Why ” I asked.
“It’s not paying me to keep her any more. She’s not giving enough milk now, and I have to sell plenty of milk to keep my farm going. Jack Dodson is coming this morning to take her to the market.”
He rested his hand briefly on the old cow’s back. “I’m right sorry to see her go. She’s like an old friend. She’s given me thousands of gallons of milk for twelve years. She doesn’t owe me anything."
There were six cows in the old barn with its low roof, and they all had names. As if she knew she were the topic
of the conversation, Blossom turned her head and looked at him. She was certainly very ancient: Her bones stuck out from her skinny body and her udder (乳房) drooped almost to the ground. But there was something appealing in the friendliness of the eyes and the patient expression on her face.
Mr. Darkin had fallen silent as he looked fondly at his cow. I was about to suggest that we might see the pigs when I heard sounds of boots in the yard and Jack Dodson, the cattle drover. hurried into the barn.
“Now then Mr. Darkin. It’s easy to see which one you want me to take,” he cried, pointing to Blossom. “It’s that skinny old thing over there.”
The farmer didn’t reply for a moment, and then he went between the cows and gently rubbed Blossom’s forehead. “Aye, this is the one, Jack.” Then he undid (解开) the chain round her neck. “Off you go, old lass,” he murmured.

【答案】The cow turned and made her way calmly from the barn. Her eyes held a depth of understanding, as if she knew what was happening but had accepted her fact with grace. She walked on the road and up the hill, Jack Dodson following behind her. Soon the man and the cow disappeared, but Mr. Darkin still gazed after them with a heavy heart. The sun was beginning to rise, casting long shadows across the yard, as if the world itself was mourning the departure of this old friend. (78 words)
About half an hour later, we heard the clip-clop of hoofs (啼声) on the hard ground. To our surprise, it was Blossom, moving at a quick pace into the yard. Mr. Darkin came running out to see what was happening. “What on earth ” he exclaimed. His eyes widened in disbelief and then filled with joy as he realized that Blossom had chosen to return home. He reached out and scratched the old cow’s back. “I won’t let you go anymore.” It was a testament to the bond they shared and the love that had sustained her for so many years. (84 words)
