Unit 4 Scientists who changed the world
Integrated skills (I)(教学设计)
I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
learn about the Science Festival;
learn how to take notes using abbreviations, contractions and symbols;
understand a school news report about the Science Festival.
II. Key competence focus
1. Get the correct information while listening.
2. Find the theme and events of a Science Festival.
III. Predicted area of difficulty
1. Learn how to take notes using abbreviations, contractions and symbols.
2. Know what to include in a plan for the school Science Festival.
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Free talk
T asks Ss to talk about the following three questions:
·Does your school hold the Science Festival
·What events do you have
·What’s the theme of your Science Festival
Step 2 Listen and circle the incorrect information
T asks Ss to listen to the talk, circle the incorrect information in each statement and correct it in the blanks.
(1) The Science Festival is coming up in two months.
S: …
(2) The Science Festival was started five years ago.
S: …
(5) The plan should be handed in next week.
S: …
T: Attention please! Statement 1, 2 and 5 have wrong information about “time”.
(3) The Science Festival aims to encourage students to take an interest in science and develop skills that may help them in their studies.
S: …
(4) Students who take part in the workshop can design different experiments.
S: …
T: Honestly, it’s reasonable to focus on the main information while listening. However, please don’t ignore the details.
2. T asks Ss to listen for key information.
T: What is the aim of the Science Festival
S: It aims to encourage students to take an interest in science and develop skills that may help them in their future lives.
Step 3 Listen again and complete the notes
Tips for taking notes.
T: If you need to write down information quickly, it is important for you to make your notes as brief as possible. You’d better adopt the following methods:
·use abbreviations and contractions;
·write down only the keywords;
·use symbols.
T: Read these examples and try to keep them in mind. The next time you come across these words, using these methods can improve your efficiency in note-taking.
(1) use abbreviations
ad = advertisement
bio- = biology
cf. = compare
Co. = company
edu = education
esp. = especially
etc. = and so on
e.g. = for example
i.e. = that is
info = information
intro = introduction
wk = week
ICU= Intensive Care Unit
max = maximum
min = minimum
para. = paragraph
Dr = doctor
St = street
Rd = road
vs = versus/against
hr = hour
IT = information technology
(2) Use contractions
it’s = it is
aren’t = are not
there’s = there is; there has
can’t = can not
they’d = they had; they would
they’re = they are
we’ll = we will
haven’t = have not
doesn’t = does not
(3) Keyword
T: Keyword is a word that tells you about the main idea or subject of something, like the word that you type into a search engine so that it will search for information related to the word on the Internet. It's very important to identify the keywords while listening, because the keywords may be the breakthrough for you to answer, or they may represent the point of view of the whole article.
(4) Use symbols
& = and
@ = at
+ = plus
> = greater than
< = smaller than
↗ = increase
↘ = decrease
→ = lead to/result in
← = result from
( ) = between, among
$ = dollar
£= pound
♂= male
♀= female
× = multiply, multiplied (by)
÷ = divide, divided (by)
O = oxygen
2. T asks Ss to discuss what should be included in a plan for the Science Festival.
T: As you have mentioned, some key elements should be included such as aim, theme, events, time & place …
3. Listen to the talk again and complete the notes using the tips above.
Step 4 Read a news report about a Science Festival
1. Pre-reading.
T: What’s the usual structure of a news report
S: …
T: Inverted pyramid.
2. Read and analyze the structure.
T: Please read the school news report on page 51 and finish the following chart.
Part Ⅰ (Para.____) ______________________________________
Part Ⅱ (Paras.____) _____________________________________
Part Ⅲ (Para.____) ______________________________________
3. Read and answer the question.
T: This school news report is mainly developed in order of _______.
4. Read and fill in the table.
T: Please read the report and try to find the theme and events.
Theme
Events
