She was walking at eight months and completing 100-piece jigsaw puzzles at 15 months. So it is no surprise that Abigail Wilson, 15, from Connecticut, USA, recently made history when she became the youngest black female ever accepted into an American university! “I’m proud of myself for getting in, but I usually find it hard to get excited. It is pretty cool, I guess,” said Abigail.
Her mother, Nancy, said that Abigail was a quiet baby, born two weeks late on Christmas Day. She didn’t speak her first words until she was 22 months old. Nancy and her husband thought something must be wrong, but when she started to talk, it was with perfect speech. Her parents read her normal bedtime stories and they didn’t know at the time that she was learning all of it.
Abigail has always been the youngest person in her class. At the age of six, she was in the fourth grade; at eight, she began taking classes at an International Baccalaureate (国际中学毕业会考) program, and at ten, she took her first high school class in math. She has studied several languages, including Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian, Arabic and German.
Abigail says that she doesn’t usually plan when she studies. She considers herself scatterbrained. And she always delays things up to the last minute — this, she says, gives her the motivation to really do something.
In her free time, Abigail plays hockey and basketball, browses the Internet, reads, cooks and hangs out with her friends (they are all 17 and 18 years old). She has also studied music. Her mother says that Abigail’s music lessons have helped her to be a normal teen. She believes that Abigail needs to be in a situation where she has to fail in order to learn. “She finds playing the piano to be very difficult, but it has made her learn better,” said Nancy. “She can’t always be successful, or she won’t learn anything! People always learn more from their failures than from their successes.”
4. Abigail spoke her first word when she was ______.
A. 15 months old B. 22 months old C. 17 months old D. 18 months old
5. Why does Abigail’s mother think learning to play the piano is good for Abigail
A. Because Abigail can make new friends.
B. Because Abigail can learn something from failure.
C. Because Abigail can learn to play a musical instrument.
D. Because Abigail can be motivated and do things quickly.
6 Which of the following statements is TRUE
A. Almost all of Abigail’s classmates are older than her.
B. Abigail’s parents read very difficult stories to her in order to make her a genius.
C. Abigail started taking classes at an International Baccalaureate program at the age of ten.
D. Abigail made history because she became the youngest ever to enter an American university.
7. Which of the following titles is the most suitable for the article
A. Roads to Success B. Universities in America
C. Abigail — a Genius Girl D. Difficulty of Making Mistakes
C
Old age may not sound exciting. But recent findings offer good news for older people and for people worried about getting older. Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of 50. In fact, they say by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were when they were 18 years old.
The findings came from a survey of more than 340,000 adults in the United States. The Gallup Organization questioned them by telephone in 2008. At that time, the people were between the ages of 18 and 85. The researchers asked questions about emotions like happiness, sadness and worry. They also asked about mental or emotional stress.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 24 and 25. The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply (突然地) after people reached their fifties.
The study also showed that men and women have similar feeling patterns as they grow older.
However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.
Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that, as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their feelings. They so spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
Professor Stone says the emotional patterns could be connected to changes in how people see the world, or maybe even changes in brain chemistry.
The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being (幸福) related to age.
8. According to the survey of the Gallup Organization people are most likely to become happier ______.
A. when they are between the ages of 18 and 85 B. when they come to their old age
C. when they are in their twenties D. when they are 18 years old
9. You may have the highest level of stress when you are at the age of ______.
A. 20 B. 25 C. 35 D. 40
10. Who would probably show the greatest interest in the passage
A. Those who are worried about getting old B. Those who are single and unemployed
C. Those who feel unhappy all the time D. Those who suffer from mental stress
11. What would be the best title for the passage
A Women Are Easier to Be Happy in Life B. The Young Are Happier Than the Old
C. Getting Older Means Getting Happier D. The Younger the Happier

① Deep under a mountain at China Jinping Underground Laboratory in Sichuan, Chinese scientists tirelessly research dark matter. Located 2,400 meters below Jinping Mountain, their research site is the world’s deepest underground laboratory.
② After reaching the foot of the mountain, it is a 10-minute drive in the tunnels before arriving at the lab. According to Sichuan Daily, there are six layers of material outside the lab, including natural rock, 50-centimeter-thick concrete and other materials to keep nearly everything out.
③ However, there is still something that cannot be kept out – the dark matter. According to NASA Science, only five percent of the universe is currently known. Dark energy fills 68 percent of the universe, and dark matter makes up about 27 percent. Human eyes can’t see either of the elements; and no one has detected them yet.
④ Scientists are confident that dark matter exists. According to National Geographic, standard physics would assume that stars orbiting at the edge of a galaxy (星系) travel slower than those near the center. However, what we see is that stars turn at nearly the same speed – no matter where they are. Scientists thus believe that stars are driven by the gravitational effect (引力效应) caused by dark matter.
⑤ With the first dark matter search results from the lab published in 2021, Chinese researchers have successfully narrowed down the range when detecting these “ghosts”. A question remains – why do scientists need such a “pure” environment
⑥ Professor Elisabetta Barberio, a physicist at the University of Melbourne, Australia, told the Science X Network website that dark matter research has to happen deep underground to “cut out the cosmic ‘noise’ and radiation ”, for instance, cosmic rays which can be absorbed by rocks. If a lab is buried deep enough underground, the impact of cosmic rays may be reduced to zero.
⑦ Yue Qian, a researcher at Tsinghua University, told Sichuan Daily that dark matter can only be observed in space, underground and when made artificially . “Simply, we just put the detector underground and wait for the dark matter to bump into it,” Yue said.
12. What do we know about the underground laboratory
A. It is under a mountain in Wuhan.
B. It has five layers of material outside.
C. It is used to keep dark matter out.
D. It is the world’s deepest underground lab.
13. Which of the following words best describe dark matter
A. Tiny and beneficial.
B. Plentiful and dangerous.
C. Invisible and mysterious.
D. Unstable and undetectable.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. How scientists study dark matter.
B. Why scientists believe dark matter exists.
C. Where scientists can find dark matter.
D. What role dark matter plays in the universe.
15. Why did scientists build the lab underground
A. To explore cosmic radiation.
B. To reduce the impact of cosmic rays.
C. To better make artificial dark matter.
D. To study the gravitational effect caused by dark matter.

任务型阅读
For Sara’s family, decorating the yard was always a celebration for the New year. This year it was Sara’s father’s turn to hang colorful lights all round their roof according to family tradition.
On New Year’s Eve, light enveloped the whole house. Everything seemed to be going fine until misfortune happened: Sara’s father passed away suddenly. Sara was very sad. However, seeing the hanging lights, she was in a state of feeling happy, gaining a tiny thread of relief.
The lights reminded her of her beloved father. Taking them down meant the final connection with her father would disappear, which she wasn’t ready to accept. So she kept them. One day in March, Sara received a typed note in the mail. “Take your New Year’s lights down!” The letter read, which made Sara angry. She couldn’t hold back her anger, and shared it with her story online. Messages of support flooded into Sara’s inbox quickly. Besides, one day, Sara was driving back home and surprised to find that New Year’s decorations reappeared on houses in her neighborhood —her neighbors had made a collective (共同的) decision to hang their lights back up in honor of her father!
She never learned the sender’s identity. But for her, that hurtful deed was far less important than so many acts of kindness. A few weeks later, Sara eventually took down the decorations. “It was hard. But due to all the support and love, it was not as hard as I thought.”

【答案】Dear fellow students,
As we all know, environmental problems are becoming more and more serious all over the world. Pollution is threatening our existence. Our school advocates that we should build a low-carbon life in order to protect the earth. I think it is everyone’s duty to work hard to achieve this goal.
Firstly, we should ride bicycles instead of riding in cars or school buses to reduce the amount of pollution. Secondly, when we eat the food in the school cafeteria, we should eat up what we buy and not waste the food. Thirdly, it is important for us to save electricity and water. We should not leave the lights on in the daytime and leave water running after washing.
Dear fellow students, let’s start right now and spare no effort to do every little thing we can from now on!
