第二节(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
The next morning, Kwan took several wrapping clothes to school. At the sight of those clothes, some of his classmates shook their heads, murmuring words of disappointment. Kwan's face turned radish red, his forehead feeling hot. At that moment, Miss Gibbs’ sonorous voice sounded, "Aren't these embroidered patterns beautiful It is Kwan who made it." Suddenly, the classroom fell silent at Miss Gibbs’ words as if she had cast a spell on them. Without a word,Kwan took a needle and a thread, which worked like magic in his hands and soon an elegant blooming rose pattern appeared on the wrapping cloth. Thunderous applause broke out, all the students feverishly pouring their admiration and praise upon Kwan.
Paragraph 2:
As Kwan listened to his classmates, he noticed that his forehead no longer felt hot. Awkwardness and embarrassment gave way to an overwhelmingly strong sense of pride and happiness. For the rest of the class, Kwan shared some fundamental knowledge and skills with his classmates. Under the guidance of Kwan, they successfully made some embroidery patterns on their own. This experience not only brought Kwan closer to his classmates but also changed his attitude towards his secret talent. Rather than feeling embarrassed, he realized that inheriting and carrying forwards traditional craftsmanship is something to be proud of.

CHRISTMAS 2020 was shaping up to be a heartbreaker for Melanie Lee. A few weeks earlier, her 33- year- old son had lost his battle with a long illness. Then the transmission (变速器) on her2007 car broke down. She had no means of paying for it to be fixed.
“When it broke down, I broke down,” Lee told CNN. “Now I don’t have my baby, now I don’t have transportation. How am I supposed to stay active in my grandchildren’s lives ”
Eliot Middleton, 38, the owner of a barbecue restaurant and former auto mechanic who, in his free time, repairs and gives away used cars. He’d heard about Lee’s difficulty from her nephew Frank McClary. On Christmas morning, Middleton showed up at Lee’s home with a gift: a white1993 Oldsmobile.
“He handed me the keys and didn’t ask for anything.” said Lee. Once again, she’s able to pick up her granddaughters from school and take them to dance class. The idea for the used- car giveaway came to Middleton a year earlier during a food drive he’d organized. Many of those who’d lined up for a meal walked up to four miles because they didn’t have cars.
Cars are a lifeline in this part of South Carolina, Middleton told CBS. “There’s no public transportation, no Ubers, no taxis to take people to job interviews, doctor appointments, even food shopping. So he posted on Facebook an offer to trade his restaurant’s specialty, barbecued ribs (烤排骨), for broken- down vehicles. Since then, friends and strangers have dropped off more than100 cars in various states of disrepair.
“People think Eliot is an angel,” Mayor McClary told the Washington Post. “And I do too.”

26.How did Middleton get so many second- hand cars
A.By posting an offer for car donation.
B.By exchanging his food with car owners.
C.By cooking best- selling food in his restaurant.
D.By buying abandoned cars and repairing them.
27.What can be the best title for this story
A.Kindness on Auto B.Trade Cars for Food
C.Heartbreaker or Angel D.Freedom Guaranteed by Cars

Have you ever seen your cat or dog eating grass They do so because it can help their digestion, and many wild species use natural substances to prevent and control diseases. This is called “zoo pharmacognosy” or, more commonly, animal self-medication.
Scientists have discovered that tamarin monkeys use a specific tree resin (树脂) as medicine. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, scientists followed several groups of them to collect data. During one of these daily studies, tamarin monkeys were observed rubbing their bodies on the trunk of a tree. At first, researchers thought that they were marking their territory, a common behaviour in this species. Botanical experts later confirmed that the tree was a species of cabreuva, which is well known for its medical properties.
Researchers decided to place camera-traps in different sites at the foot of the tree to record future visits by tamarin monkeys. The records surprisingly showed that many animals living in the forest visited it. Totally, ten species were observed. For many of them, it was the first time that behaviors similar to self-medication had been observed. More surprisingly, one species spread resin on each other’s fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed to specifically visit the tree to acquire the resin and seemingly benefit from it, either healing their wounds or fighting back parasites (寄生虫).
While further studies are needed to identify the properties of the resin and thus confirm that this is indeed self-medication, the use of it suggests that cabreuva represents a common and universal drugstore for the residents of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. It is likely to be a valuable resource helping the species maintain their magnitude by improving their health.
This discovery could have an important protection influence, as the disappearance of some trees could potentially affect the survival of some animals.
28.Why do tamarin monkeys rub themselves against the tree
A.They are trying to cure diseases. B.They would like to digest what they eat.
C.They feel like occupying the land. D.They are attracting companions’ attention.
29.What do researchers find through camera-traps
A.Many animals copy monkeys’ behaviors.
B.Animals can help each other clean the fur.
C.The cabreduva is the habitat of tamarin monkeys.
D.Resin can be used as medicine for some animals.
30.What does the underlined word “magnitude” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Characteristics. B.Populations. C.Similarities. D.Flexibilities.
31.What is the possible significance of the discovery
A.Promoting evolution of creatures. B.Increasing the production of resin.
C.Contributing to forest conservation. D.Motivating the study of monkeys’ diet.
D
Superhighways of vessels (血管) beneath our skin transport blood and nutrients. These natural pathways branch out like tree limbs to help our body move food and oxygen to our organs. Our bodies make vessels naturally, but bioengineers also want to make them artificially. And now a team of engineers has found a cool new way to do that in the lab: They use ice.
To make the vessels, the engineers first needed a template (模板) from which to build the tissue. “Originally, we were trying to do this with wax (蜡),” says Ozdoganlar, a mechanical engineer who’s leading the new vessel-building project at Carnegie Mellon University. But wax proved “too soft,” he says. “And it’s not necessarily biocompatible (生物兼容的),” or suitable for use in the body. Then they thought of Elsa’s magic in a Disney movie Frozen.
Ice seemed like a good alternative to wax. It costs little and is readily available. And since it’s not poisonous, the body won’t reject it. And printing the ice template is simple. First, engineers program its shape into a 3-D printer. The printer then drops water onto a very cold surface. The printer repeats this process until the vessel’s shape is complete. In all, it takes less than 30 seconds. This icy vessel template is then encased in gelatin, a clear substance without any taste. Shining ultraviolet light on the gelatin hardens it as the ice melts away. What’s left are realistic-looking channels for blood to move through.
So far, the Carnegie Mellon team has tested the gel channels with endothelial cells. These are the cells that line the inner walls of blood vessels. In one experiment, those cells survived two weeks lining the artificial vessels. This is promising, but there is still a long way to go before such replacement vessels could be transplanted into people.
In the future, such artificial vessels could be used as part of lab-made organs to save the lives of people urgently awaiting donated organs for transplant. “This is really a game changer,” says Ozdoganlar.
32.What inspired the team of engineers to use ice instead
A.The movie Frozen. B.Its low cost.
C.The new project. D.Its easy availability.
33.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A.The differences between ice and wax.
B.The reason for printing the ice template.
C.The application of 3-D printing technology.
D.The advantages of ice as vessel printing stuff.
34.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A.The lab can mass produce organs for use.
B.The technology is not yet mature at this point.
C.The artificial vessels will be put to use soon.
D.The organ transplantation is easier to perform.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To sing high praise for engineers’ work.
B.To make known a technical innovation.
C.To promote vessels made by using ice.
D.To encourage technological innovation.

Why dogs chase their tails There are some answers to this question, which might surprise you. While tail chasing can be a harmless behavior, sometimes it can indicate a potential issue requiring a vet visit. Below are some common meanings behind your dog chasing its tail.
36
It might look like a strange activity to humans, but tail- chasing is a simple way for dogs to let loose and have a little fun. 37 Just keep in mind that a constantly bored or stressed dog might be feeling left out, so make sure its basic needs are being met, including exercise and socialization.
Your dog is feeling stressed.
On the other hand, uncontrollable tail- chasing behavior could be a warning sign that your dog is anxious or stressed. 38 By the way, this fruitless and frustrating behavior is what led to the saying “like a dog chasing its tail”.
Your dog wants your attention.
Tail- chasing is actually a go- to behavior for young dogs who are playing and learning about their bodies. And it’s hard not to smile when you see this happening, especially in puppies, because it’s funny and adorable. But this type of response can cause your pup to keep doing it. Try not to encourage this behavior. 39
Your dog may have intestinal parasites (肠道寄生虫).
This is another common reason why dogs chase their tails. It’s also a reason why dogs chew their tails, too. Infections are generally common in young dogs and can even be deadly in some puppies if left untreated. 40 If your dog is chasing their tail a lot, it’s best to rule out any medical issues first, so always get in touch with your vet who will be able to examine them and find the root of the problem.
A.Your dog wants exercise.
B.Your dog is expressing its emotion.
C.Your pup will form the habit of tail chasing.
D.Instead, provide a distraction by giving your dog a new toy or going on a walk.
E.Find out what’s at the root of your dog’s anxiety and then address that problem.
F.Common types of parasites include tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms and so on.
G.If a dog doesn’t have anything or anyone to play with, it might need to entertain itself.

Kwan's Secret Talent
"Kwan, isn't that your art teacher " his grandmother said, pointing at a woman walking out of the grocery store. Kwan waved, and Mrs. Gibbs walked over to him and his grandmother. "It's very nice to see you," Mrs. Gibbs said. Then she saw the cloths wrapped around the groceries Kwan and his grandmother were loading into their car. "Oh, how beautiful!" she exclaimed.
"Thank you. These are our hometown wrapping cloths," grandmother explained. "Kwan and I embroidered(刺绣)them together.” Kwan looked away. Although he enjoyed helping grandmother make the cloths, he didn't want anyone at school to know about it.
"Kwan, you should bring your cloths to school tomorrow. Your classmates would enjoy seeing them. You have a unique skill,” Mrs. Gibbs said.
Kwan appreciated his teacher's comments, but he was hesitant. The kids might laugh at the idea of a boy who liked to stitch(缝) patterns with a needle and thread. He thought about his grandmother’s wide smile that showed how proud of him she would be for sharing this custom.
"O.K. I'll bring some to class tomorrow," Kwan replied quietly. Grandma sensed that something was wrong. "Kwan, are you worried about tomorrow " she asked. Kwan stared at the floor. "What are the other kids going to think " he said. "This isn't the kind of thing they do for fun. Creating embroidered patterns isn't like playing an instrument or a sport."
"You're right," Grandma said. "It is different. But that is why it is so special." Then she brought out a fine cloth with different designs. "When your grandfather and I were married, we received a gift from his mother wrapped in this cloth she made. In our culture, gifts given in wrapping cloths are extra special because they are a symbol of love and good luck." she explained.
