Louis Braille was born in France in 1809. Sadly when he was a little boy, he had an accident. By the time he was four years old, he was completely blind. However, at the age of ten, Louis was lucky enough to go to one of the first schools for blind children in Paris. At this particular school they had special books. They were written in ordinary French but the letters raised up off the page, so that the students could feel the shape of the words and read them. But there were two problems with this system. First, the letters were huge and difficult to read. Second, the books were very expensive so the school library only had fourteen altogether.
In 1821, when Louis was twelve years old, a soldier came to his school. This man had invented a system for soldiers to send and receive messages in the dark. Although this idea had not worked very well, Louis became very excited and began experiments with it. By the time he was fifteen, he had invented a perfect system which used only six dots. And by 1827 the first book using his system was published.
It still took a long time before people realized what a wonderful invention Braille’s system was. In fact, Louis died in 1852 and did not live to see the success of his system, which has been adapted to almost every language in the world. Thanks to him, blind or weak-sighted people are able to read or write as well as any sighted person.
24. What did books for the blind look like when Louis was a boy
A. No books designed for the blind.
B. Books with raised dots on each page.
C. Books with letters raised up off each page.
D. The same books as those for the able-bodied.
25. What led Louis to invent a reading system for the blind
A. The letters were huge and difficult to read.
B. Books designed for the blind were too costly.
C. The number of books for the blind was very small.
D. A messaging system for soldiers to use in the dark.
26. When did Louis perfect the reading system
A. In 1821 B. In 1824 C. In 1827 D. In 1852
27. According to the last paragraph, what significance does Louis Braille’s reading system have
A. It helps make the blind independent to learn.
B. It is easy and convenient for the blind to live.
C. It has been adapted to every language in the world.
D. It contributes to producing more books for the blind.
Research studies indicate that children who eat breakfast perform better at school. Maybe it works that way for adults too since our brains need fuel to work properly.
Skipping breakfast is a common way for people who are trying to lose weight, but unfortunately, it’s usually not a successful way. Your body (or more likely, your brain) expects to be refueled a few times each day. When you don’t eat breakfast, you may feel so hungry by lunchtime that you eat more foods than you normally would, which cancels out the calories you cut by skipping breakfast. You may also be tempted to choose foods that are not the healthiest choices when you feel like you are starving.
For many people, eating breakfast may be an important part of a weight loss diet. Research studies tell us that people who eat breakfast are more likely to keep up a healthy weight. Some experts believe that breakfast keeps your metabolism (新陈代谢) running higher. In fact, it takes three or four days of eating nothing before the body starts changing down your metabolism. It’s more likely that people who regularly eat breakfast also make good dietary choices the rest of the day.
Breakfast should include a healthy source of protein and plenty of fiber; the combination will help satisfy your hunger and will keep you feeling full until lunchtime. The protein can come from low-fat meat low-fat dairy products, or nuts. Eggs are also a good source of protein. High-fiber foods, include fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
If you really don’t like to eat breakfast in the morning, you can split it up into two smaller meals. Eat a hard-boiled egg, or a small cup of yogurt at home before you leave for work, and then about an hour or two later, take a break from work and snack on an apple and a handful of healthy nuts like pecans or walnuts.
28. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2
A. Eating breakfast keeps us healthier than skipping it.
B. Skipping breakfast isn’t very useful for losing weight.
C. Our brain needs a lot of fuel to work properly.
D. What healthy food we should eat for breakfast
29. What does the underlined word “tempted” Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Pretended. B. Determined. C. Attracted. D. Warned.
30. All the following are a good source of protein EXCEPT _______.
A. low-fat meat B. low-fat dairy products
C. vegetables D. eggs
31. The passage is most probably taken from _______.
A. a news report B. a personal diary
C. a biology book D. a healthy life website
It is widely known that any English conversation begins with the weather. Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr. Johnson’s famous comment that “When two English meet, their first talk is of weather.” Though Johnson’s observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, people fail to come up with a good explanation for this English weather-speak.
Bill Bryson, for example, says that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the interest in it can hardly be understood. He argues that “To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it.” Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.
Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. Bryson is wrong, he says, because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena (现象). “The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty.” According to him, the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it draws the English as well as the outsider.
Bryson and Paxman stand for common misunderstandings about the weather-speak among the English. Both of them, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weather-speak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overcome the natural reserve and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weather-speak are not requests for weather ata. Rather, they are greetings. In other words, English weather-speak is a means of social bonding.
32. Why does the author mention Dr. Johnson’s comment
A. Because Dr. Johnson is famous.
B. To show that most people agree with Dr. Johnson.
C. Because the comment was accurate two hundred years ago.
D. To show that English conversations usually start with the weather.
33. According to the passage, what does Jeremy Paxman believe
A. Bill Bryson has little knowledge of the weather.
B. There is nothing special about the English weather.
C. The English weather attracts people to the British Isles.
D. English people talk about the weather for its uncertainty.
34. What does the underlined word “draw” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean
A. To explore. B. To attract. C. To ensure. D. To digitise.
35. What is the author’s main purpose of writing the passage
A. To analyse the weather in the UK.
B. To explain what English weather-speak is about.
C. To argue with both Bill Bryson and Jeremy Paxman.
D. To tell people that the English weather is changeable.

After that, Steve still couldn’t do his homework. “Just try it,” Miss White said one day. “Steve! Please! I care about you!” Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it!
