第二节(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
Jordan nodded, "I let her out last night." My mouth dropped open. "She was outside all night " I was so furious, "It was freezing and she could die!" Jordan choked back his words, stunned. I grabbed my coat and rushed outside. Jordan followed, fear welling up in his eyes. Several minutes later, the poor thing was found, shaking and curling into a tiny ball. I picked her up, unsure whether she was alive or dead. Jordan was scared, "We need a vet! Now!"
Paragraph 2:
As I drove to the animal hospital, Jordan sat in the back, holding Meatball inside his coat. I could hear him talking to the cat and apologizing repeatedly. Luckily, the vet saved Meatball. Seeing her eyes open, Jordan stroked her head, with tears in his eyes. Then, surprisingly, he turned to me. He apologized for what he had done. "I know you just want to keep me safe," he murmured. I felt a lump in my throat. He rubbed Meatball’s back and said,"We are both going to observe the curfew. It's for our own good."

I love travelling, but it hasn’t always been my passion. In my first year of university, I started to travel during the holiday. During the Christmas holiday I went to Paris, and during the spring vacation, I visited Athens and various cities in Italy. I was very excited because this was the first time I had travelled abroad with just my friends. This desire to travel started off simply as a way to have something to look forward to after exams, but I soon discovered how important it is to travel.
On my travels I have had the opportunity where I not only experience new and exciting cultures through the art, history, language and food, but also communicate with people who have different views on life. Travelling is a learning experience for both yourself and the people you meet. Some people I met during my travels had never heard of Gambia and it was very delightful to share my African roots with them. When you travel you will meet people who have different cultural backgrounds and as a result, sometimes your own ideas and opinions might be challenged. It’s important to learn to see things from other people’s perspectives (视角) and challenge your own.
This is how I realized that travelling is the realization of home. When you travel you can see a different setting, a different language and a different way of living.
Travelling is truly an enriching experience and I am always excited about the discoveries that wait for me in my next adventure!

Children seem to care so much about their names. A study shows that most young people wish their parents had given them a different name.
Some people choose to change their names when they grow up. Many people in show business don’t use the names their parents gave them. Have you ever listened to Joanne No The answer could be “yes” if we call her stage name instead! You may never heard of Margaret. But if we tell you her stage name, you might know her as a famous dancer.
In many cultures, there are special ideas about how to choose a name. For example, many people choose a name that has been in their family for many years. It tells the child where he or she comes from.
Choosing a good name isn’t easy. Many parents search books that tell them the meanings of names. They could choose a name that carries a message. For example, Edith means “valuable gift”. Amanda means “love”. And Fara means “joy”.
Names like these tell family and friends how happy they are with their new baby. Other names can say something about the events during the birth of the child. In Africa, a first born son may have the name Mosi and the name Ama means “born on Saturday”.
Is every boy called Curtis polite And is every girl called Mahira quick and full of energy No parents can tell what kind of person their child will grow up to be. Just because parents name a boy Fahim, it doesn’t mean he will be clever. All they can do is hope.

Boxing has been practiced for centuries — it was even one of the sports in the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece. More recently, boxing has become the mainstream in the UK, with hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life participating in the sport every week. But why The answer lies in the physical, mental and even social benefits boxing can bring.
Its physical benefits are clear. Whether it’s practicing with a punching bag (沙袋) or a partner or facing an opponent in the ring, boxing can be an intense form of exercise and give a full-body workout. It can improve muscular strength, and it can also increase fitness — allowing someone to work out harder, for longer. These can, in turn, have a positive impact on other aspects of physical well-being, like heart health and weight management.
But the high physical demands of the sport aren’t just good for the body — boxing can also have a positive impact on someone’s mental well-being. Dr Jessica Pinchbeck, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Fitness at the Open University, says that boxing can mitigate some of the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Exercising regularly is already widely known to be good for mental health, but boxing can also bring a sense of discipline and focus.
And there is a third benefit of putting on the boxing gloves. Practicing punches can be done alone, of course, but boxing is not just an individual activity — it also involves working with others to train and stay safe. Dr Gavin Williams, Senior Lecturer in Education at the Open University, says that this cooperation and team work can create a sense of identity and belonging. So, no matter what the reason that attracts someone to boxing, the interactive elements of the sport mean it can also have profound social benefits.
Good for body, mind and social interactions It’s not surprising that more and more people are stepping into the ring.
32.How does the author develop the passage
A.By giving examples. B.By making suggestions.
C.By listing reasons. D.By answering questions.
33.What does the underlined word “mitigate ”in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Change. B.Determine. C.Control. D.Reduce.

A.Practicing boxing in the ring. B.Practicing boxing with a partner.
C.Practicing boxing on your own. D.Practicing boxing with a punching bag.

My teenage son, Jordan, always complained about having to be home earlier than all his friends. He would tell me that he was already seventeen, but still had a curfew (宵禁). He believed he was practically an adult. I pointed out that he was not an adult as he was still in high school. "You don't trust me!" he yelled. Before I continued, he rolled his eyes, slammed the door and walked away, I sighed. How could I make Jordan see that I only wanted to keep him safe
I decided to go for a walk, hoping the December air would clear my head. I opened the front door and early stepped on her: a small black cat, just like a meatball. "Hi, Meatball," I said, bringing her into my arms. I walked back in, touching her neck gently. Meatball seemed happy enough to come in the house, but after an hour or two, she sat by the door, meowing to go back outside.
"Why won't she just stay in with us all the time " Nathan, my youngest son, asked.
I explained to him that she was happy here but she liked being able to come and go as she pleased. "That must be nice," Jordan muttered from the other room, complaining why the cat, not him, could me and go. He even asked me to give Meatball a curfew. Meatball became a regular.
One night , temperatures were unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, meowing to go outside. I shook my head at her, afraid that she might freeze to death. She stared at me and meowed again. I patted her head, "I know you're not happy, but it's for your own good. "
"Mom is not being mean to you," Nathan told the cat. "She's just trying to keep you from turning so a frozen meatball." We both laughed at his joke.
The next morning, I couldn't find Meatball. I asked the kids if anyone had seen her.
