15-year-old Cassandra Lin admires unexpected heroes. Inspired by a YouTube story about a Malawian boy who built windmills from bicycle parts to power his village, she created an award-winning recycling program in her hometown, Westerly, Rhode Island. This program, Project TGIF (Turn Grease Into Fuel), encourages residents and local restaurants to recycle used cooking oil, which is then processed into biodiesel (生物柴油) fuel. The money earned from the program is donated to help heat the homes of needy people in Westerly. That’s exactly what this persistent tenth grader has done. For her, however, it’s just something she does with her friends after school.
To make the project successful, Cassandra and her team educated themselves on the biodiesel refining process, made their own biodiesel with proper safety measures, secured two separate youth seed grants, and persuaded community leaders to support the initiative. They identified a non-sustainable emergency heating program and the issue of pouring used fats and oils down into drains as key problems in their community. “All of our problems are
snowballed together,” Cassandra said. She and her team puzzled over how to combine these problems to get a one-off solution. An article on collecting and recycling cooking oil settled the deal.
Cassandra’s leadership, clear-sightedness, logical thinking, and creativity were central to the success of TGIF. Her enthusiasm and energy have motivated many to join her cause. Despite her achievements, Cassandra stays down-to-earth, viewing her efforts as just part of her after-school activities. When reminded that she is featured on YouTube as a delegate (代表) to the Tunza International Youth Conference in South Korea, keeping a low profile, she responds “Am I ”
4. What is the aim of Project TGIF
A. To encourage locals to lead a healthy life.
B. To provide science education for teenagers.
C. To reduce the use of cooking oil in Westerly.
D. To find a green way to process used cooking oil.
5. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. The article the teenagers published. B. The scientific basis of the recycling.
C. The financial problem the team faced. D. The practice of advancing the project.
6. What do we know from Cassandra’s response in the last paragraph
A. She is humble. B. She is doubtful.
C. She is aggressive. D. She is straightforward.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. A Malawian boy that tops the Youtube channel
B. An intelligent tenth grader who changes her life
C. Grease to fuel: A schoolgirl’s wisdom warms the community
D. A school project bridging the energy gap illuminates the world
C
It is not science fiction or a prediction about the distant future. A new AI system that changes brain activity into text is here to revolutionize the way we think about communication, and has the potential to become one of the technological milestones of our era.
Many might remember Stephen Hawking, the British physicist, world-famous for his work on space and time, who used AI technology that helped him speak by detecting the tensions in his cheek muscles. Well, what’s coming next is even more complex.
Neuroscientists (神经学家) at the University of California, San Francisco, have developed a new AI system that can turn neural waves into written words. These findings were revealed in the Nature Neuroscience journal, one of the world’s leading multidisciplinary science journals, in March this year.
Science Alert, a source for the latest science news, discusses how the system uses brain implants (植入物) to track neural activity while someone is speaking. That data is then changed into numbers, which are then translated into words and sentences.
The algorithm (算法) has reached an accuracy level of 97 percent, which presents fewer errors than the average human transcriber. The numbers show high levels of accuracy. This is the closest that technology has ever come to being able to“read someone’s mind”.
For now, the technology only works when someone is speaking aloud, but researchers believe that it could eventually be developed to be used for those individuals who, for some reason, are unable to speak or type. This discovery could potentially transform the lives of countless individuals for the better, greatly improving their ability to communicate with others.
While there are numerous challenges ahead, this new study combining neuroscience and machine learning using artificial intelligence, shows how fundamental technology is to improving people’s lives. If we try to put ourselves in the shoes of those who can’t speak for a moment, we will understand why this discovery has the potential to be such an innovative one.
8. What does the story of Stephen Hawking indicate
A. The new AI system is easy to develop.
B. The new AI system can predict the future.
C. The AI can help recognize people’s voices.
D. The AI technology has played a role in reality.
9. How does the new AI system help convey data according to Science Alert
A. By turning brain signals into words. B. By changing words into neural waves.
C. By improving the speaker’s thinking ability. D. By changing the process of brain activities.
10. What does paragraph 5 mainly stress about the new AI system
A. Its popularity. B. Its high efficiency. C. Its complexity. D. Its potentiality.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. We can completely read people’s mind by AI.
B. The brain implant can restore people’s voices.
C The new AI system is a promising breakthrough in technology.
D. Technology is the only way to improve human beings’ lives.
D
eHealth can improve our lifestyle without the help of a health care provider. “You have 1,563 steps left to reach your step goal for today. Would you like to take a walk ” When a sports watch provides such feedback, there is a much greater chance that you will take more steps. It also helps if an app teaches you something about health, “It’s very good that you drink sugar-free cola. But it does have caffeine, which raises your blood pressure.”
Social psychologist Talia Cohen Rodrigues interviewed 16 health care professionals and surveyed over 650 people with a special disease about their opinions and expectations of lifestyle interventions(干预)and eHealth. It’s amazing that older patients prefer to see a health care professional because they may not be very skilled at technology. Younger patients want to be guided by an app or a coach to improve their lifestyle.
Cohen Rodrigues believes that we need to offer patients choices. For example, current medical programs after a heart attack are rather uniform. People often receive group sessions and fixed content. If an app offers the opportunity to create a personalized program and give patients freedom in improving their lifestyle, it will be much more welcomed.
Making progress with eHealth without human intervention sounds very enticing, especially in times when health care costs are increasing. However, is Health the solution to increasing weight-related issues and other lifestyle problems Cohen Rodrigues fears not for two reasons.
“If you drink tea instead of cola thanks to your app, it doesn’t help if the supermarket keeps offering cheap cola,” said Cohen Rodrigues. “Secondly, eHealth can make many people aware of their behavior and help change it.” But there are disadvantaged areas where we need to be careful about such solutions. Lower digital skills make eHealth less effective. Additionally, due to the lack of money, some people often have no mental space to work on their health. That’s something we should deal with. Otherwise, successful eHealth will only worsen health differences.
12. How does eHealth encourage healthier behaviors
A. By offering personalized reminders. B. By connecting patients with doctors.
C. By starting relaxing daily conversations. D. By providing prizes for healthy choices.
13. What result does Cohen Rodrigues’ interview show
A. Technology-based health tools are widely popular.
B. Patient age shapes preference for health guidance.
C. Health care professionals support eHealth solutions.
D. Traditional health care methods should be improved.
14. What problem is mentioned about some current medical programs
A. Little attention to specific needs. B. The shortage of medical experts.
C. Poor follow-up care for patients. D. The high cost of health care.
15. What does the underlined word “enticing” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Unnecessary. B. Confusing. C. Attractive. D. Private.
16. Why does Cohen Rodrigues have doubts about the use of eHealth
A. Its long-term benefits can be unclear.
B. It mainly suits disadvantaged communities.
C. It fails to deal with mental health problems.
D. Its effects are influenced by real-life conditions.

When I was told I needed glasses, I wasn’t a bit surprised. I had been struggling with poor eyesight for a while, and it was starting to affect my schoolwork. My teacher repeatedly said that I couldn’t complete my work accurately recently. It became clear to me that I simply couldn’t see the blackboard well from the back of the classroom. I remembered how my deskmate had to read the notes aloud to me so that I could copy them down, like a parrot, which made me feel embarrassed and dependent on others.
Finally, I got my first pair of glasses. They had pink frames, and I was excited to show them off at school. I expected to look different in a good way, but reality was a far cry from what I imagined. The boys in my class
laughed, hiding their faces and giving me mischievous smiles as they teased me. Although the girls said the glasses looked good on me, I knew they were just telling white lies.
Despite the teasing, wearing glasses changed my world. Everything looked clear, like stepping into a 3D movie. I could finally see the details I had been missing, and I felt at ease to see the blackboard clearly again. But after about a month, my excitement disappeared, and a sense of insecurity set in. I began to feel self-conscious about the glasses, and I would take them off whenever possible, hoping to fit in better. One day, my friend Zane, who didn’t wear glasses but often borrowed notebooks from others after class, asked if she could try them on. I handed them to her. Immediately she put them on, her mouth dropped open.

【48题答案】
【答案】
She looked around the classroom with the glasses on. She couldn’t believe how clear everything looked, and her genuine surprise made me realize that maybe wearing glasses wasn’t such a bad thing after all. She kept saying how amazing it was to see the world so sharply, which made me smile. That moment helped me change the way I thought about my own glasses. For the first time, I didn’t feel embarrassed about them. On Sunday, she invited me to go with her to get a pair of glasses.
On Monday, we walked into class, feeling different — more confident. Zane had her new glasses, and she was as happy as I had been when I first got mine. We both smiled, realizing how much had changed in such a short time. My classmates stopped teasing me after understanding the reason. Now, I’m proud to wear my glasses. With my vision clear, I could focus better in class, and my confidence started to grow. Together, Zane and I realize embracing what makes us different can actually make us stronger.
