The importance of keeping kids reading books over the summer cannot be overstated. Here are some activities that can keep kids engaged in reading books.
Barnes Noble
This US bookstore has prepared a list of 100 summer reads for kids of all ages. Kids, grades 1-6, who participate can earn a free book after they read eight books. The kids keep a reading journal of all the books they have finished. You can download the journal and summer reading list here.
Reading Is Fundamental
The largest children’s literacy nonprofit in the US, RIF, wants kids to release their imaginations by taking the summer reading pledge (承诺). The first 200 families to join will receive a free book that is featured in the organization’s summer collection. The books in the collection will allow kids to read about new and exciting places.
Scholastic
Scholastic books can be enjoyed when school is out in the company’s online reading program. The participants can read about adventures, earn virtual rewards, and help unlock donations for kids who do not have access to books. The program runs through September 7. Sign up at the Scholastic Home Base and update your own “reading streak (纪录)”. The more books a child reads, the more digital experiences he or she can earn.
Summer Reading at Your Public Library
In New York City, the public library has summer reading programs for kids and teens. Take the 60-day reading challenge, attend special events, and even enter the annual summer writing contest. The librarians have prepared a large number of inspiring books for all ages. Kids who complete a combination of reading hours, activities, and 10 books receive prizes. At just 17, Lauren Schroeder has already made a significant impact on her community. Her voyage began at 14, volunteering at a food shelter. While packing boxes with canned goods for needy families, Lauren detected a substantial shortage: fresh vegetables. This observation sparked an idea that soon grew into a community-wide initiative.
Lauren pictured transforming part of her family’s 150-acre farm into a garden committed to growing produce for local families. Her proposal was met with a hint of concern from her mother, Katie Schroeder. While supportive, she also foresaw the extensive labor involved. Despite the agricultural background — her family typically planted soybeans and corn — vegetable cultivation was a novel pursuit. Nevertheless, Lauren was eager to tackle the nutritional deficiency she had uncovered.
The hard work began in earnest. Not discouraged by potential obstacles, Lauren dived into research to be a seasoned vegetable cultivator and secured a grant (拨款) from the National FFA Organization to cover initial costs. Subsequently, she spent two to three hours daily watering her crops by hand through the hot Iowa summers, sandwiching this commitment between softball practices. Furthermore, she carefully tended to her garden, combating weeds and harvesting crops, with green beans proving particularly challenging.
Eventually, with assistance from her younger brothers and sisters, Lauren’s half-acre garden produced 15 varieties of vegetables. In its first year, the garden generated 40 pounds of produce, benefiting food banks, nursing homes, and soup kitchens.
Motivated by the early achievements, Lauren doubled the garden’s size. To date, she has donated over 7,000 pounds of produce, valued at approximately $15,000, commanding community respect. Her work has found a deep echo among others, notably a mother from a local shelter who was grateful for the fresh food that reminded her children of home.
Lauren’s inspiration is straightforward yet deep-seated. “I wanted to have something that would impact people,” she told KWQC. Her actions demonstrate her belief in the power of community and the joy obtained from helping others — a feeling that will undoubtedly shape her future initiatives.
4. Why did Lauren initiate the community garden
A. To pursue a new hobby. B. To explore plant cultivation.
C. To fill a food shelter’s vegetable gap. D. To gain recognition in her community.
5. How did Lauren overcome her lack of experience in vegetable farming
A. By doing trial and error. B. By conducting thorough research.
C. By engaging in fundraising activities. D. By maintaining consistent hard work
6. What do we know about Lauren in the initial process of vegetable cultivation
A. She was passionate and determined. B. She was inexperienced but creative.
C. She was observant and popular. D. She was concerned but hardworking.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Garden to Table: a Solo Effort B. Local Garden: Hope for the Globe
C. Harvesting Hope: Community Growth D. Farming Fundamentals: a Teen’s Journey
C
Each year, the world loses about 10 million hectares of forest — an area about the size of Iceland — because of cutting down trees. At that rate, some scientists predict the world’s forests could disappear in 100 to 200 years. To handle it, now researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have pioneered a technique to generate wood-like plant materials in a lab. This makes it possible to “grow” a wooden product without cutting down trees.
In the lab, the researchers first take cells from the leaves of a young plant. These cells are cultured in liquid medium for two days, then moved to another medium which contains nutrients and two different hormones (激素). By adjusting the hormone levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities of the cells. Next, the researchers use a 3D printer to shape the cell-based material, and let the shaped material grow in the dark for three months. Finally, the researchers dehydrate (使脱水) the material, and then evaluate its qualities.
They found that lower hormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells of lower density (密度), while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures. Lower or higher density of cell structures makes the plant materials softer or more rigid, helping the materials grow with different wood-like characteristics. What’s more, it’s to be noted that the research process is about 100 times faster than the time it takes for a tree to grow to maturity!
Research of this kind is ground-breaking. “This work demonstrates the great power of a technology,” says lead researcher, Jeffrey Berenstain. “The real opportunity here is to be at its best with what you use and how you use it. This technology can be tuned to meet the requirements you give about shapes, sizes, rigidity, and forms. It enables us to ‘grow’any wooden product in a way that traditional agricultural methods can’t achieve.”
8. Why do researchers at MIT conduct the research
A. To grow more trees.
B. To protect plant diversity.
C. To reduce tree losses.
D. To predict forest disappearance.
9. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the lab research
A. Its theoretical basis.
B. Its key procedures.
C. Its scientific evidence.
D. Its usual difficulties.
10. What does the finding suggest about the plant materials
A. The hormone levels affect their rigidity.
B. They are better than naturally grown plants.
C. Their cells’shapes mainly rely on their density.
D. Their growth speed determines their characteristics.
11. Why is the research ground-breaking according to Berenstain
A. It uses new biological materials in lab experiments.
B. It has a significant impact on worldwide plant growth.
C. It challenges traditional scientific theories in forestry.
D. It revolutionizes the way to make wooden products.
D
Over the past few months, I’ve been invited to speak with well-known writers, musicians and film producers regarding my recent book, Extraterrestrial. Prior to these conversations, I was on the receiving (and admiring) end of their artistic work, but now they were curious about my own research as a scientist. The reverse led me to recognize the similarities between innovation in the arts and the sciences.
In sciences and arts alike, creativity appears magically as an unpredictable fountain of inspiration from the subconscious (潜意识). Its unexpected content breaks routines within traditional thinking. It delivers something new that is distinct from common practices, often taking people out of their comfort zone because it is ahead of its time. As a result, many innovators are laughed at and denied the recognition they deserve when they need it the most.
There are many examples of such circumstances. In 1933 Fritz Zwicky inferred the existence of “dark matter”, but it took four decades for this concept to gain recognition within the astronomy community. Vincent van Gogh was considered a madman and a failure throughout his life. Today, his paintings are among the most expensive ever sold, though.
Typically, life offers two ways of acquiring objects. One is by collecting available items, and the other is by creating things that never existed before. Whereas most items on the shelves of supermarkets are mass-produced, products that are newly created by artists or scientists are originally unique. Just like aging wine, a product of creative work acquires quality over time. It is colored by the response of the audience as well as by imitations. The initial circumstances are a reminder of an admirable baby. It is fascinating for a scientist or an artist to watch the interaction of their creation with the world, just as it is for parents to watch their children.
Creativity in arts and sciences establishes a backdrop for human existence, as the content it invents gives pleasure and meaning to our lives. The human act of creation is an infinite-sum game, from which all of us benefit. And we can all participate in the creative process.
12. Which can best replace the underlined word “reverse” in paragraph 1
A. Priority. B. Assumption. C. Shift. D. Preference.
13. What can best describe creativity in sciences and arts
A. It tends to be forecastable. B. It mirrors common beliefs.
C. It usually leads the times. D. It enjoys instant acceptance.
14. What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A. Creative works withstand the test of time.
B. Mass-produced items are preferable.
C. Old wine can’t be put into new bottles.
D. Inventiveness starts from childhood.
15. What’s the purpose of the last paragraph
A. To clarify a concept. B. To launch an appeal.
C. To offer an entertainment. D. To advocate a lifestyle.

Whether you’re aware of it or not, when you interact with others, you’re continuously giving and receiving non-verbal (非言语的) signals. There has been considerable research on how non-verbal clues, particularly those coming from-the eyes, affect our behavior. ___16___.
We are programmed to respond to eyes. ___17___ Human babies are fascinated by eyes, preferring to attend to them over almost anything else, and eye contact is a vital part of the bonding process between mothers and babies.
___18___ Psychologist Paul Ekman has distinguished between smiles that represent genuine happiness and false smiles that might be used to show unreal happiness, or cover some other emotions. The key to telling a false smile from a real one is in the eyes. When forming real smiles, the eyes narrow and create lines, or “crow’s feet”, at the outer corners.
Gaze (凝视) is a powerful social signal. Mutual gaze can be disturbing because it signals that the individual looking at us intends to engage in some sort of behavior that involves us. The intended behavior may be welcome and exciting or unwelcome and terrifying. ___19___ In situations where we simply cannot understand what the other person intends, we’ll fall into discomfort and get scared.
Eye contact is an effective sign of deception (欺骗), but not in the way that you think. Everyone assumes that a liar won’t look you in the eye, but research on the non-verbal clues associated with deception suggests that a liar engages in more eye contact than a truth-teller. ___20___ Hence, they’ll overdo the eye contact in order to appear truthful.
A. Here are some interesting results.
B. The eyes will tell you if a smile is real or not.
C. Research shows that humans have a born ability to do so.
D. Here is advice on how to use body language to your advantage.
E. It’s important to understand how to improve non-verbal communication skills.
F. In either case, the other person’s gaze energizes us to make the appropriate response.
G. The explanation is that the deceiver goes the extra mile to try to convince you of his or her honesty.

【答案】My family tradition
It’s an honor to talk about my family tradition. I can clearly remember the bright Saturday afternoon 10 years ago, when I accidentally knocked over a neighbor’s flowerpot. Out of fear, I took flight immediately, rushed home and poured the whole thing to my parents. They praised me for my honesty and encouraged me to take responsibility for my fault bravely. Much touched, I went to apologize to my neighbor sincerely.
Surprisingly, instead of blaming me, he gave me a thumbs-up for my honesty, which brought me a great sense of relief and joy. It was at that moment that I realized the power of the family tradition. Actually, honesty and responsibility have been running in our family.
My family tradition has shaped me into a better version of myself and will lead me further.
Thanks for your listening.

【答案】Realizing the severe situation, Hill ran out for help. She dashed to Mrs. Smith’s house, her small heart racing. “Mrs. Smith, come quick! Mommy’s not moving!” she cried, her voice trembling with fear. Mrs. Smith, ever the composed neighbor, followed Hill without delay, immediately recognizing the urgency of the situation. Upon entering Jennifer’s home, Mrs. Smith found her on the floor, seizing. “Call 911, Hill, and stay on the line,” she instructed, her voice steady as she began first aid. Hill, though scared, managed to relay the emergency to the operator, her mother’s lifeline.
Jennifer finally came to herself in the hospital. The sterile environment formed a stark contrast to the warmth of her kitchen. As she regained consciousness, she saw Hill’s tearful face and Mrs. Smith’s comforting presence. The relief was palpable; she knew her quick-thinking daughter and reliable neighbor had saved her life, reinforcing the bond of their little family and the community that supported them.
