In February 2023, the world watched in shock as a great earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, killing more than 50,000 people and causing widespread destruction.
Among those watching was 13-year-old Bosnian Benjamin Mehanovic. After seeing the news of the disaster on television with his family, Benjamin decided he wanted to do something to help.
Benjamin started his own aid campaign in the best kid-way possible — by setting up a small tea stand on the streets of his hometown, Sarajevo. His goal To raise money for the babies affected by the earthquake. Armed with a small table, a homemade sign, and his huge heart to keep him warm, Benjamin braved the cold for 4 hours a day, selling tea for 50 cents a cup. He raised more than $100 in two days. He then used the money to buy much needed baby products.
Benjamin’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed. His selfless act of kindness caught the attention of the International University of Sarajevo (IUS). The university invited the young boy to the campus and gave him a full scholarship. The head of IUS said of Benjamin, “He is a little boy who has a big heart. He is an example of what humankind should do in difficult moments.”
Benjamin plans on putting the scholarship toward a medical degree, hoping to become a doctor. “I would like to be a medical student because I like to help people,” he said.
For now, he is only 13 years old but he’s already making a difference in the lives of those who are suffering. While many of us think about doing something, Benjamin didn’t hesitate to take action. Chinese consumer spending is set to more than double in the next ten years. By 2030, China’s private consumption is set to reach 80tn yuan. In such a competitive and growing market, brands need to stand out from the crowd. One recent trend is the blind box, where customers purchase a package from a brand containing unknown products. While the concept itself is nothing new, it’s a hit that’s grabbed the attention of young Chinese consumers.
The blind box market was worth 7.4bn yuan in 2019, and this is predicted to rocket up to 30bn yuan by 2024.
They are an example of probabilistic selling — where even after making a payment, consumers have no idea what's inside. This concept has been promoted in modern times, with Chinese consumers becoming addicted to the feeling of suspense.
These small boxes are becoming big business due to the highly-educated, white-collar, youthful buyers they attract. Women account for over 62% of blind box sales and 74% of consumers fall between the ages of 18-34. The industries and brands offering blind boxes are remarkably various. Even the Chinese travel industry has got on board, with airlines selling blind box domestic flights to randomly chosen destinations.
For Chinese Generation Z and Generation Y (raised in relatively rich periods), the game-like elements of surprise and excitement have stimulated their curiosity. With a strong preference for purchases allowing self-expression and a sense of fun, Chinese Generation Z and Generation Y are willing to pay for hobbies that drive emotional satisfaction — and blind boxes are one extremely satisfying way to do this.
Much of the appeal of the blind box concept lies in the delivery and unwrapping experience — with collection, surprise and social engagement all playing a part. Brands have taken advantage of this by increasing the uniqueness of their products — for instance, an “archaeological blind box” from Henan Museum allowed consumers to use a Luoyang shovel to dig out the contents of the blind box.
With Chinese Generation Z and Generation Y valuing emotional experiences highly, creating long-lasting interactions and genuine brand connections should be central to any Chinese marketing strategy.
8. What makes the blind box concept a hit among young Chinese consumers
A. The cheap price.
B. The known products inside.
C. The large size of the box.
D. The feeling of suspense.
9. What has the Chinese travel industry done regarding blind boxes
A. Bought blind boxes from other industries.
B. Sold blind box domestic flights.
C. Created blind box travel guides.
D. Stopped the use of blind boxes.
10. Why are Chinese Generation Z and Generation Y willing to pay for blind boxes
A. Because they can express themselves and get emotional satisfaction.
B. Because they are very cheap.
C Because they like to collect big boxes.
D. Because they want to support local brands.
11. What can be inferred about Chinese consumers’ attitude towards blind boxes
A. They only care about the value of the products inside.
B. They are attracted by the novelty and fun.
C. They consider it a waste of money.
D. They are forced to buy by the market trend.

Wild bison (野牛) are to return to the UK for the first time in 6,000 years, with the release of one male and three females in Blean woods in Kent soon. The 1m project to reintroduce the animals will help secure the future of an endangered species. But they will also naturally regenerate a former pine wood plantation by killing off trees.
Populations of the UK’s most important wildlife have greatly plummeted since 1970. Britain is one of the countries suffering great species loss in the world, despite the best efforts of protectors.
Paul Hadaway, from Kent Wildlife Trust, said: “The Wilder Blean project will prove that a wilder, nature-based solution is the right one to tackle the climate and nature crisis we now face.
Using missing keystone species (关键物种) like bison to bring back natural processes to habitats is the key to creating biodiversity in our landscape.”
Known as “ecosystem engineers”, bison kill selected trees by eating their bark or using them as a tool to remove their thick winter fur. This creates a big dead wood dinner for insects, which provide food for birds. Tree felling also creates sunny clearings where plants can grow healthily.
The bison will not be given any food or artificial shelters, though their health will be monitored by observing their coats and examining their waste. “We need to keep them as wild as possible for the project to succeed,” said Hadaway. But he said there was no intention to introduce enemies such as wolves. "It's increasingly clear that daring and imaginative rewilding (再野生化) is urgently needed to tackle the country's worrying loss of wildlife,” said Rebecca Wrigley, of Rewilding Britain. She said far more needed to be done across the UK to reintroduce large animals feeding on plants and let them do their magic. Hadaway said: “Sometimes in the rewilding debate people think that it’s a look back to the past, but that’s not what we’re about. We’re about trying to find the right natural solution for the modern world.”
12. What is the main purpose of the 1m project
A. To make Kent more beautiful with bison.
B. To reintroduce bison and protect an endangered species.
C. To build a new park in Blean woods.
D. To study the behavior of wild bison.
13. What does the underlined word “plummeted” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Decreased rapidly.
B. Stayed the same.
C. Increased greatly.
D. Fluctuated slightly.
14. Why are bison called “ecosystem engineers”
A. Because they can change the environment to benefit other species.
B. Because they can monitor the health of other animals.
C. Because they can build artificial shelters.
D. Because they can protect trees from being damaged.
15. Which of the following would be the most suitable title for this passage
A. Wild Bison: The Most Endangered Species in the UK.
B. UK’s Wildlife Protection: Past and Present.
C. The Role of Bison in UK’s Forest Restoration.
D. The Reintroduction of Wild Bison: A Hope for UK’s Biodiversity.

56【答案】 An Eco-Exploration in the Park
Last Friday our class, accompanied by our biology teacher, visited the park near school for an ecological survey.
We started by identifying different plants and trees, noting their unique characteristics. Then, we observed the wildlife around the pond, spotting fish, frogs, and various insects. We also learned about the food chains and ecological balance. We were amazed by the complexity and beauty of nature. It made us understand that every creature has its place and that we humans should respect and protect the ecosystem.
This activity was truly enlightening. It has not only increased my ecological knowledge but also strengthened my resolve to contribute to environmental conservation. I hope more such activities can be organized in the future.
