Bioluminescence (生物荧光) is to California as the Aurora Borealis is to the Arctic. These events occur when single-celled organisms, known as dinoflagellates (甲藻), suddenly give off a kind of light after being disturbed. They’re most common in spring and into summer, especially during years with a combination of good rains and warm weather. Here are a few tips to help you witness bioluminescence:
Monitor Social Media
The first reports of a bioluminescence event are likely to show upon Instagram and Twitter, which are easily searchable. You can also setup a warning on Google that will round up news coverage.
Check With Aquariums
Such institutions as the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey might post updates on their websites or social media feeds, especially if bioluminescence is happening locally.
Find a Dark Location
If bioluminescence is ongoing, try to find a stretch of coast that’s as far away from light as possible. Get out before the moon rises for the best conditions and some experts also suggest that two hours after sunset is a good bet Give your eyes time to adjust and use your flashlight’s red light, which will keep your vision adjusted to the darkness.
Track Hotspots
The best displays can vary from night tonight, so check again on social media for updates. The environmental website Treehugger named San Diego one of the world’s eight best places to see bioluminescence. Meanwhile, north of San Francisco at Point Reyes National Seashore, To males Bay is a dependable spot for bioluminescence and you can go out on guided trips with Blue Waters Kayaking.
1. What kind of condition is better for witnessing bioluminescence
A. Hot dry weather. B. Warm rainy weather.
C. Cold rainy weather. D. Cold dry weather.
2. What should you stay away from when witnessing bioluminescence
A. Water. B. Sunset. C. Darkness. D. Light.
3. Where maybe the best place to see bioluminescence
A. In La Jolla. B. In Long Beach. C. In San Diego. D. In San Francisco.

Unable to hold back my curiosity any longer, I opened the beautifully wrapped present. It was a shiny, new laptop. I had scored straight A’s for my examination and this was my reward. I had always envied (嫉妒) my friends who were always exchanging news about “chat rooms” or “e-mailing”, which I knew nothing about. Now I was going to find out.
It started out simply enough. I was searching for some information online when I came across a social networking site. Soon I became attached to my new-found electronic friend. I began to spend more and more time on YouTube and became controlled by Facebook and Twitter. Whenever I was not accessing these social networking sites, I would be going through gossip (八卦) or fashion websites.
As time passed, I would lock myself in my room during weekends, refusing to come out and take part in family discussions. I preferred to stay connected to the “friends” online whom I had never met. Soon I was spending the early hours of the morning surfing the Internet. Sleep became broken naps and my grades at school also began worsening.
It was about this time that my parents started voicing their disapproval. I was asked to reduce my usage of the Internet. Yet, however hard I tried, I was unable to pull myself away. I was thirsty for just another click, or just another look at message board. Then one day, my father took away my laptop. I cried, shouted and even begged but in vain. Dad had made up his mind.
Over time, I realized that Dad and Mum had always wanted the best for me. That was when I decided to take the big step—to quit my internet addiction. Quitting was harder than I expected. But with strong determination, I knew that I would be able to do it. I promised my parents that I would turn over a new leaf.
4. Why did the author’s parents buy her a laptop
A. To reward her for her excellent grades. B. To let her make more friends easily.
C. To meet her curiosity about chat rooms. D. To help her set up a social networking site.
5. What happened to the author after she got addicted to the Internet
A. She went out with new friends a lot. B. She suffered from sleeplessness.
C. She got anxious and lost her temper. D. She ignored the people and things around her.
6. What made the author decide to quit her internet addiction
A. Her father’s demand. B. Her boredom with the Internet.
C. Her worsening school grades. D. Her parents’ love and expectations.
7. What can we learn from the author’s story
A. It’s never too late to mend. B. Action speaks louder than words.
C. Behind bad luck comes good luck. D. A bad beginning makes a bad ending.
C
As much as I love the rides in theme parks, my favorite part of the experience is the live entertainment. Whether it’s a parade, stage show, “streetmosphere”, or even an impressive nighttime show, I just love the energy that a live performance can bring to a space. It is not uncommon for me to visit a theme park and go on one ride and spend the rest of the time just enjoying the atmosphere.
No matter how many times I ride an attraction, I’m having the same experience. But with live entertainment, it constantly changes. Different performers bring their own touch to the show. Even when things go wrong in a live situation, I find it fascinating to see how it is covered. There is an impressive art to fixing an error, or sometimes even making it a comedic moment.
But because these live performances aren’t bolted (固定) to the ground and are easily influenced, they are often the first thing to get removed from the parks when there is a shortage of money. As much as I understand this business decision, it feels shortsighted. The parks simply don’t feel alive when live entertainment is missing. Without it, a theme park is just a group of people walking quickly from one ride to the next.
We are certainly living in an unprecedented time, but I’m happy to see that theme parks have found creative ways to make sure there is some sort of live entertainment put on safe. Most parks are having their characters and performances visible from a distance.
One of my favorite examples of this was shared by @Attractions on Twitter, where Winnie the Pooh was frolicking around Epcot and trying to catch a butterfly. This is such a great example of what can be done with characters and live entertainers in a time when the “norm” isn’t possible, I honestly hope that these special moments remain once it’s safe for the meet-and-greets and close-up interactions to return.
8. What does the author like best in a theme park
A. Joining its parades. B. Observing its visitors.
C. Trying its various rides. D. Enjoying its live shows.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. The error. B. The show. C. The reason. D. The attention.
10. What does the author think of the business decision in paragraph 3
A. It will bring theme parks more business.
B. It will make theme parks easily influenced
C. It will make theme park rides more popular.
D. It will take away the liveliness of theme parks.
11. Why does the author mention Winnie the Pooh
A. To explain what theme parks can do to stay
B. To show its popularity among theme park visitors.
C. To explain what characters can do to get closer to visitors.
D. To show the influence special times can have on theme park.

A study claims that wearable devices could also be used by cows on the farms of the future. Researchers from Southwest Jiaotong University in China have developed a smartwatch that can be used to monitor cows’ health, reproductivity and location.
“Monitoring environmental and health information of cattle can help prevent diseases and improve the efficiency of pasture breeding (草场培育) and management,” said Zutao Zhang, co-author of the study. In the study, the team set out to develop a wearable device that could be used to collect vital information on cows. “This information can include oxygen concentration, air temperature, amount of exercise, reproductive cycles, disease, and milk production,” explained Mr Zhang.
The smart devices are worn around the cows’ necks and ankles. They contain a unique motion enhancement mechanism (运动增强机制) to strengthen small movements the cows make. Once captured, the kinetic energy (动能) from the cow’s movements is stored in a battery and used to power the device. This means the device doesn’t need to be charged like a traditional smartwatch.
“There is a large amount of kinetic energy that can be harvested in cattle’s daily movements, such as walking, running, and even neck movement,” said co-author Yajia Pan. To put the device to the test, the researchers tested it on human participants. The tests revealed that even a light jog was enough to power temperature measurements on the device.
Beyond cows, the researchers say that the smart device could have a range of application in humans. This includes in sports monitoring, healthcare, smart homes, and wireless sensor networks. “Kinetic energy is everywhere in the environment—leaves falling in the wind, the movement of people and animals—these phenomena all contain a lot of kinetic energy,” said Zhang. “We shouldn’t let this energy go to waste.”
12. Why did the team develop the wearable device
A To monitor cows’ environmental effects.
B. To gather vital information on cows.
C To locate where cows reproduce.
D. To improve the quality of milk.
13. How is the device different from other smartwatches
A. It can be applied to many human related fields.
B. It should be worn around the cow’s necks and ankles.
C. It makes use of the energy from the cow’s movements.
D. It takes less time to be charged than traditional smartwatches.
14. What do we know about kinetic energy from the last two paragraphs
A. It is easy to harvest. B. It is simple to test.
C. It is huge in amount. D. It is widely applied.
15. What is the best title for this passage
A. Wearable Devices in the Future Farm
B. The Kinetic Energy in Natural World
C. The Quality Meat of the Super Cows
D. Wide Applications of a New Invention

Asad was a 13-year-old boy who was very honest and hardworking. Recently, he had entered a new school, so he had no friends yet. On Monday morning, he was nearly late for school. The night before, his family attended his cousin’s wedding and reached home late, which was why he couldn’t get up on time as usual.
At school, Asad could not pay attention to anything and wanted the bell to ring so that he could buy something to eat. After a few hours, when the bell rang, Asad quickly opened his schoolbag to find his money, but just then he remembered that he had left for school in a hurry in the morning and forgotten to take money. He looked under his books, hoping to find some money but there was nothing.
Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among them was Fahad. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very arrogant(傲慢的)boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Asad was new, he didn’t know much about Fahad.
When he went towards Fahad and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Fahad laughed a lot and said, “I knew you were a loser, maybe a beggar ” Fahad laughed out so loud that other kids also heard and made fun of the situation. He didn’t answer Fahad, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.
When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and recognized it as Fahad’s, as he remembered Fahad showing it to his friends and telling that his uncle bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.
At first, Asad wanted to keep it a secret and punished Fahad.

I am extremely delighted to hear that you will visit to Yulin. I can hardly wait to give you a brief introduction to it.
Located in the southeast part of Guangxi, Yulin is an ancient city with 2000 years of history and culture, the largest hometown of overseas Chinese. There are plenty of tourist attractions in Yulin, Yutian Palace, Darengshan National Park, and Colorful Garden and so on, among which Colorful Garden is what you cannot afford to miss. At first, Asad wanted to keep it a secret and punished Fahad. At least he could afford the lunch now. However, another voice popped up, urging him to give it back to Fahad, which made him feel torn. “I should never keep the wallet at the cost of my honesty, and Fahad would be extremely embarrassed without any money in the presence of so many classmates!”Asad convinced himself. Once he made up his mind, he accelerated his pace and caught him up. “Fahad, it’s your wallet and I found it on the bench.” Taking over the wallet, Fahad stared into Asad’s eyes with a puzzled look written on his face.
Then Fahad said, “Why are you giving it back ” He even looked into his wallet, obviously doubtful about Asads act. Calmly and patiently Asad explained, “I had originally wanted to keep it secret as a punishment for your arrogance, but being honest matters more to me.” Hearing what Asad had said, Fahad felt his face burning with shame. He bent, thanking Asad for saving him from the embarrassing situation and apologizing to the classmates around for calling them losers. “And the lunch is on me. You all are my friends!”Fahad announced.
