In 2013, John weighed over 250 pounds and led a mostly inactive lifestyle. His days were spent sitting behind a desk for long hours, with little to no exercise. But a health scare one day made him realize he needed to make a drastic change.
John started small. He began by taking short walks during his lunch breaks. Gradually, he increased the duration and intensity of his walks. Before long, he was jogging and then running. Running became a passion for him. He started participating in local 5K races and soon moved on to longer distances.

Today, John has completed several triathlons, including some long-distance ones. His life has changed completely. He not only lost a large amount of weight but also gained a new sense of confidence and purpose.
He credits his success to his determination and the support of his family and friends. “The journey hasn’t been easy, but every step has been worth it. I never thought I could do something like this, but here I am,” John says.

China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is known for its dynamic music and traditional dances dating back to ancient times. The Twelve Muqam which is known as the mother of Uyghur music, is a musical form that consists of sung poetry, stories and music. It consists of more than 300 different melodies, some 4,000 lines of lyrics and takes around 24 hours to play in its entirety.
Like other traditions in Xinjiang, the art is being passed on to future generations. Muqam music is not only an artistic creation with a long history, but also a record of communication between China and the countries to the west of it in human history. It can be found in 19 countries and regions in Central, South, and West Asia, and North Africa, and along the ancient Silk Road running across the autonomous region. In November of 2005, UNESCO (United Nations Educational Cultural and Scientific Organization) declared the Art of Chinese Xinjiang Uyghur Muqam as a masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of humanity.
Xinjiang Uyghur Muqam is a mixture of songs, dances, and folk and classical music, and is characterized by a variety of content, dance styles, musical morphology, and instruments used. The songs differ in rhyme and are performed solo as well as in groups. The lyrics contain not only folk songs but also poems written by classical Uyghur masters. Thus, the songs show a wide range of styles such as poetry, proverbs, folk narrative, and popular topics such as the praise of love and reflection on life, showing the history and present-day life of the Uyghur society.
Today, the Twelve Muqam is gaining more attention at festivals and special occasions in Xinjiang. And folk artists are making an effort to pass on this ancient art performance with energy.

A new study in Japan shows that after chloroplasts (叶绿体) from algae (藻类) are put into hamster (仓鼠) cells, the chloroplasts don’t die right away, and neither do the hamster cells. Instead, they use these chloroplasts to do photosynthesis (光合作用).
The writer of the paper is Yukihiro Matsunaga from the University of Tokyo in Japan. After his research team put chloroplasts from algae into hamster cells, they originally thought that the chloroplasts would be eaten by cells within a few hours. However, these chloroplasts stayed alive in hamster cells for at least two days.
The researchers used different imaging methods such as confocal microscopy, super-resolution microscopy, and electron microscopy to look at the structure of chloroplasts inside cells and made sure that hamster cells didn’t actively “attack” these chloroplasts as they expected.
So, are the chloroplasts inside hamster cells still alive and working, or have they become useless “zombies” The researchers used light pulse measurement and made sure that there was still electron transfer in chloroplasts. Electron transfer is an important part in photosynthesis. The confirmation of this phenomenon showed that the chloroplasts put into hamsters were still doing photosynthesis.
Finally, the team compared hamster cells with chloroplasts and those without chloroplasts. After two days, they found that the cells with chloroplasts grew bigger. This directly proves that the photosynthesis of chloroplasts really makes nutrients, and these nutrients make cells grow faster.
This team is continuing to study how to make chloroplasts live longer in animal cells in order to create “planar animal” cells and provide animals with the beneficial characteristics of plants.
12. How did the researchers confirm that chloroplasts in hamster cells did photosynthesis
A. By observing hamster cells growing bigger. B. By using imaging to see chloroplasts’ structure.
C. By ensuring electron transfer in chloroplasts. D. By finding chloroplasts alive in hamster cells.
13. What can we infer from the passage
A. Chloroplasts do not affect hamster cells’ growth.
B. More about chloroplasts in animal cells may be found.
C “Planar animal” cells have been created by the team.
D. Making chloroplasts live longer in animal cells is easy.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards the research
A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Neutral. D. Positive.
15. What is the text about
A. The Discovery of Chloroplasts’ New Function.
B. The Role of Photosynthesis in Hamster Cells.
C. A Study on Combining Chloroplasts and Hamster Cells.
D. A Research on Making “Planar Animal” Cells.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in high school, my drama teacher Mr. Thompson asked me to take part in the yearly school drama show tryout (试演). I said no immediately. I had never been on the stage before. Acting seemed so difficult for me that I always felt extremely nervous even just thinking about it. My teacher had once let me help with the backstage work during a play, where I witnessed how amazing the actors were on stage. No one seemed more excited than he did about their performances.
So, why did he suddenly push me to do something I was certain I’d fail at His reply: “Because I see your potential. If you’re willing to put in the effort, I think you have a good chance.” Inspired by his words, I decided to give it a try.
I chose a minor character as my focus. The character was a shy student who gradually became confident. I could relate to that transformation. Did the character feel scared at first Have moments of self-doubt Did they want to run away from the stage I understood those feelings all too well. I was scared. I had doubts. I wanted to back out.
But, like the character I was playing, I pushed forward. I practiced hard. I worked on my lines every day. I watched videos of great actors to learn about expressions and body language. I even practiced in front of my family to get used to an audience.
When I showed my performance to Mr. Thompson, he watched carefully, smiled, and said, “Good. Now, practice it again.” I practiced it again, and again and again. When I finally felt ready, the thought of getting a role had given way to the joy of improving my acting skills. If I didn’t get a great part, I wouldn’t be too disappointed.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

Dear fellow students,
It’s my great honor to be here to talk about the benefits of information technology.
First, it greatly improves communication. We can easily keep in touch with people all over the world through various tools like smartphones and social media. Second, it enriches education. Online learning platforms provide us with vast educational resources, enabling us to study at our own pace. Third, it improves healthcare. Telemedicine enables patients who live in a remote area to consult doctors remotely, saving time and effort. Medical records can be digitized and shared easily among healthcare providers, improving the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment.
In conclusion, information technology has brought us many advantages. Let’s make good use of it.
Thank you!

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot about the drama show tryout, there came the news. I had been given a role in the play! It wasn’t a leading one, but it was a significant part that I was more than happy to take on. I was filled with excitement and a sense of accomplishment, knowing all my hard work had paid off. It was also my teacher’s encouragement that made me where I am today, and I was supposed to share my enjoyment with him.
I went to my teacher’s office after the casting announcement. Mr. Thompson was waiting for me. “congratulations!” my teacher nodded when seeing me, his eyes twinkled with pride. “I know you can, and you earned this! But it is just a beginning. Keep going and you will be rewarded!” “I wouldn’t have done it without you.” I said and thanked Mr. Thompson sincerely for believing in me and pushing me to step out of my comfort zone. His words of encouragement stayed with me long after I left his office, giving me confidence for the upcoming performance.
