I can still remember my primary school homework on
animals. I decided 14 (write) about the whale (鲸鱼). I have
loved them from a young age.
I’m not quite sure why I love them. It might be something
about 15 (they) shape. They have a smooth shape, and their
tails look like a heart. They also move so 16 (slow) and
beautifully, like a tree dancing in the wind. This way, they seem
very clever.
So, of course, one of my best memories 17 (be) when I
got to see a type of whale called the Southern Right Whale in
Argentina. Watching them moving smoothly in the water, I felt
18 (happy) than ever. They were so beautiful!
And I’m not the only one who loves whales. Different peoples
across the world have a special place for whales in their 19
(heart). Take the Maori people in New Zealand as 20 example. Living by the ocean, they see whales as guardians(守护者) of the ocean and talk about them a lot in their 21 (tradition) stories.
Why was I interested in whales like the Maori people 22
they need our protection. That’s what my school homework was
about—animals we need to protect. Whales play a big role
23 the ocean. So, protecting whales means protecting the
whole ocean.

marked for future protection. A fishery law enforcement ship
arrived at the sea area near Dalian in the morning, carrying the
spotted seals. The seals were let go free one by one into the sea.
They swam freely in the water, returning to their natural home.
Spotted seals are nationally protected animals in China. They
are the only kind of seals that can breed (繁殖) in Chinese waters. Like migratory(迁徙的) birds, they appear around November
every year in Liaodong Bay, and take the long journey back to the
Northwest Pacific in May after breeding. They are often
considered as the “panda of the sea”.
Thanks to China’s top-class national protection in recent
years, the population of spotted seals in Chinese waters has
reached around 2,000, while the global population is between
400,000 and 600,000. Studies have shown that these 2,000 spotted seals are of great importance for the study and research on spotted
seals.
To protect this rare animal and its ecological environment, the
Liaoning Dalian Spotted Seal Wetlands were set up in 1992. In
January 2002, they were included in the List of Wetlands of
International Importance. Covering an area of 560,000 hectares
with a coastline of about 370 kilometers, the wetlands are rich
in biological resources. They have become home to nationally
protected animals such as the spotted seal, finless porpoise,
killer whales, false killer whales, common dolphins, bottlenose
dolphins, and East Asian river dolphins.
Since 1992, researchers in Dalian have successfully saved 388 spotted seals and put 299 of them back into the wild.
24.Where were the 23 spotted seals put back into the sea

Humpback whales are another kind of endangered animals.
Scientists look for humpback whales by using underwater

It was reported in April 2024 that the China Wildlife
Conservation Association (CWCA,
would send giant pandas Yun Chuan and Xin Bao to the San
Diego Zoo in the United States, which is a symbol of a new
10-year period of international conservation partnership. The
CWCA has organized experienced caretakers and doctors to go
with the pandas to the US. The zoo is getting ready to provide the pandas with a larger and more comfortable living environment. It
has also formed a team with special skills related with panda care, daily nursing, and scientific research.
The cooperation (合作) between the CWCA and the San
Diego Zoo dates back to 1996 when Bai Yun and Shi Shi became
the first pair of pandas to live in the zoo. Giant pandas Hua Mei,
born in 1999, and Mei Sheng, born in 2003, who used to live
there, are the result of China-US giant panda research cooperation. Over the past twenty years, the two sides have cooperated
and solved many technical problems, including important
discoveries in key areas like panda raising.
Since the 1990s, China has cooperated on giant panda
conservation with 20 countries. “International cooperation in
fields such as disease prevention and control, treatment, and wild
training and reintroduction to the wild, has achieved good results. Giant pandas will facilitate communication between peoples and
let people around the world know China better,” said Li, the
leader of the China Conservation and Research Center for the
Giant Panda.

A record of 1,101 manatees (海牛) died in Florida in 2021,
many from hunger. So next December, government wildlife experts thought up a plan to give food to the manatees. They
decided to feed them green vegetables like lettuce and cabbage.
Ron Mezich, an expert, said, “We’re making a difference.”
So far, they have served up more than 193,000 pounds of lettuce to hungry manatees. But as the weather is getting warm,
the program is expected to end soon.
Manatees are huge sea animals that only eat sea grass and
other plants that live in the sea. That’s one reason why they’re
sometimes called “sea cows”. Since 1967, Florida’s manatees
have been on the US government’s list of endangered animals.
Most dangers to manatees come from humans. One of the
biggest problems faced by the animals is the boat. Manatees are
curious and fairly slow. That has led to thousands of manatees
being hit or killed by boats. At one point, there were only about
2,000 manatees left in Florida. With protection, the number
increased. In 2016, there were more than 6,000 manatees.
However, as sea grass began to disappear, the number of
manatees keeps going down again. Warming seas with polluted
water have created the huge growth of algae (藻类) on the ocean’s
surface. The algae blocks the sunlight that allows the sea grass
to grow. For example, in the Indian River Lagoon, where manatees often go in the winter, about 90% of the sea grass beds there have died off. In the long term, Florida will work to help restore (恢复) sea grass beds. But that will take time. Scientists still worry that
hundreds more manatees could starve this winter.
16.Why are manatees sometimes called “sea cows”
A.They are as big as cows.
B.They can swim like cows.
C.They have tails like cows.
D.They feed on plants like cows.
D
17. How has the number of manatees changed over years
A. B.
C. D.
B
18. Which shows the correct order of the
causes of manatees’ death
A.sea pollution→growth of algae→death of sea grass→death
of manatees
B.growth of algae→sea pollution→death of sea grass→death
of manatees
A
C.sea pollution→death of sea grass→growth of algae→death
of manatees
D.growth of algae→death of sea grass→sea pollution→death
of manatees
19.The underlined word “blocks” can be replaced by the
word “ ”.
A.provides B.prevents
C.helps D.attacks
B
20.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The government in Florida carries out a feeding program to
prevent manatees from starving.
B.Manatees in Florida are facing threats from boats and pollution.
C.Sea grass beds are disappearing due to algae growth, impacting manatees.
D.Reasons for manatees’ death are still unclear.
A
根据第二段中“Manatees are huge sea
animals that only eat sea grass and other plants that live in the
sea. That’s one reason why they’re sometimes called ’sea
cows’.”
polluted water...about 90% of the sea grass beds there have died
off.”
故选A。
根据第三段中的“However, as sea
grass began to disappear, the number of manatees keeps going
down again.”以及“The algae blocks the sunlight that allows
the sea grass to grow.”
故选A。
C
Two small black bears lost their mother last July in the San
Bernardino Mountains. 21 One weighed only 12 pounds
and the other weighed 15 pounds. If they stayed alone, they
could be attacked by other bears, coyotes (丛林狼), mountain
lions, or bobcats (短尾猫). So they were in great danger.
22 The bears were taken to the Ramona Wildlife Center
in San Diego. There, they were given special care and treatment.
After being treated at the center’s wildlife hospital, the bears
were moved to a large enclosure (围场) that was similar to their
natural environment. Workers fed the animals with remote
control devices (遥控装置). 23 The bears ate nuts, vegetables, and fruit and had to search for much of the food as they
would in the wild.
After nearly a year, the bears had grown strong and healthy.
24 Before they went back into the wild, officials put special
tracking devices on them so that they could follow the bears’
movements. On May 15th, the bears were finally set free, not
far from where they were first found.

From September to February each year, Dazhong Mountain inChuxiong, Yunnan is home to more than 50,000,000 migratory
birds (候鸟). People used to call the mountain Daqueshan,
which means the bird-hunting mountain.
The villagers used to hunt birds on the mountain. Then one
year, they couldn’t hear birds singing. People started to worry if
migratory birds would return again. In 1984, the Hongtupo
Forest Police Station was set up. The officers worked on the
mountain, trying to find migratory birds and stop people from
hunting them. The job was really difficult. They might lose their
way or meet dangerous animals.
The officers also tried to tell villagers the importance of
protecting birds and other wild animals. They visited the villagers
door to door and helped them with farm work. They even
organized activities in schools to get their messages across to
children. Now, even children know that birds are to be loved.
The mountain is greener, the water is clearer, and more and
more animals come to live here. It has become a bird-protecting
mountain. Many people have opened bed-and-breakfasts (旅
馆) for birdwatchers.
“The village has changed a lot, and we don’t hunt birds
anymore,” people say. Since people have stopped hunting, the
police station now mainly works to save injured (受伤的) wildlife.

Protecting Wild Animals
Today more and more wild animals are endangered. Humans
cut down trees and the environment is polluted seriously, so the

don’t have enough food to eat. Some people kill the animals for
money and fur, and some even eat the meat.
How can we protect wild animals I think the government

So let’s try our best to protect the wild animals.
