Parts of a Plant
There are more than 300 000 kinds of plants on Earth. Some
plants are as big as tall buildings; others are as small as rice. Plants are key parts of the food chain. They play an important part in the nature because they produce oxygen—the gas that all animals
need.
能力提升全练
What is a plant
Most people have no difficulty finding the differences
between an animal and a plant. Clearly, animals can move around,
but most plants can’t. What makes a plant a plant Like animals,
plants are living things that are made up of lots of cells(细胞).
Unlike animals, plants get their own energy through
photosynthesis (光合作用). Most plants have roots, stems, and
leaves, and most plants reproduce by flowering(开花) and
making fruits or seeds.
How does a plant grow
Most animals grow in a certain way, and genes control
their growth. That is to say, even when they are small, it’s easy
to know what they will look like after growing up. Plants are
different. Of course, their growth is controlled by genes, but
their final shape also depends on where they live. For example,
a tree can be big and round if it grows up in an open space, but
much taller and thinner if it grows in the woods with other trees
all around. Plants are unable to walk from one environment to
another, so it is important that they are able to get used to the
environment.

A.The number of plant species.
B.Different sizes of plants.
C.The importance of plants.

(新素材·仿生学)(2024河北中考)
Nature has many ways to solve problems. We humans
learn a lot from animals and plants in nature. There is a science
about how we copy great ideas from animals and plants to create
helpful products. It is called biomimetics(仿生学).
素养探究全练
sugar glider
Some animals such as this sugar glider have wing-like structures
(结构) to help them fly from tree to tree. When they jump,
they spread out their arms and legs to help them fly down easily.
Wingsuits, a kind of clothes, can let people experience flying. The idea of these clothes comes from the sugar glider.
armadillo
Some animals have structures used for self-protection. An
armadillo has a hard cover that can protect it from other dangerous animals. When an armadillo feels that it is in danger, it will
change into a ball. Once the dangerous animal goes away, it
comes out of the ball. The armadillo has taught people to create
a backpack with a hard surface. The surface of the backpack
protects things inside from being broken.
Plants have helped people come up with amazing inventions,
too. Perhaps the best-known example is Velcro(尼龙搭扣). It
includes two pieces of cloth. They stick to each other when
they are pressed together. Velcro is used on everything from
handbags to clothes. The idea of Velcro is from burrs(带芒刺
的小果实) of a plant. They have special structures to allow
themselves to stick to people’s clothing or hair. They are taken
to other places in this way.
From these examples, we can see biomimetics is widely used in
our daily life. What other problems will nature help us solve in
the future Let’s wait and see!

Plants give us fruits, vegetables and other foods we eat.
Some plants even provide materials for medicine or building
things. But do you know that plants can do something even
more amazing They can make our homes, schools and
workplaces much healthier.
We spend a large part of our day indoors. Unluckily, the air
inside buildings can often be full of chemicals(化学物质). This
poor air quality(质量)can make us feel sick, causing sore eyes
and throats, and even making it hard for us to breathe.
The good news is that plants are like nature’s little
superheroes. They have magic power fighting against bad air.
Plants breathe in carbon dioxide (CO2) and breathe out oxygen
(O2) which we humans need to live. They can also add moisture
to the air if it’s too dry, making it more comfortable for us to
breathe.
▲ Scientists have discovered that plants have the ability
to take in harmful chemicals, making the air around us safer to
breathe. They set up a completely closed building called
“biohome” for experiments. Before they added plants, the air
inside was full of chemicals and people found it hard to breathe.
But after they added plants, the air got much cleaner and it
became easier to breathe. To make the air inside even better,
the scientists used different kinds of plants. After a while, the
building wasn’t a “sick building” any more. People could go
inside without feeling unwell.

①Plants have roots, leaves, and flowers. They have seeds (种
子), too. New plants grow from seeds. Some seeds fall on the
ground. New plants grow next to the old plants. When plants
grow this way, they are too crowded to get enough sunshine
and water. So some of them die. But some plants spread their
seeds even far from where they live. These seeds grow in new
places. There are many ways of the seeds’ travel.
②The wind helps seeds to travel. Some plant seeds have little
wings. When the wind blows, the seeds fly away. Soon they fall
to the ground and new plants may grow there. Some plants dry
up. The wind pulls them from the ground, but they are so big
that they can’t fly. They roll along the ground, dropping off
their seeds.
③Other plants grow near the water. Their seeds drop into
the water and go away with it. They may travel many miles be-
fore they stop.
④Some seeds have special parts called “stickers”. The stickers
help the seeds travel far. How These seeds wait for an animal
to walk by. Then they stick into its fur to get a free ride.

As we all know, trees are useful to humans and animals.
They provide wildlife with living places and food. They take in
carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and produce oxygen (氧气). They
also make our world more beautiful. Let’s learn about some
kinds of trees in the world.
Mulberry trees (桑树)
Mulberry trees come from China. Silkworms like to eat
their leaves. Chinese people began to keep these worms and
make silk thousands of years ago. In ancient times, the silk
went abroad through the Silk Road and made China famous.
Gingko (银杏)
The gingko is from China. The life of a gingko tree can be
very long—even thousands of years. In autumn, the gingko
leaves turn yellow and look like beautiful small fans.
Eucalyptus(桉树)

Hi Tom,
How’s it going I’d like to share the interesting experience of
my labor homework with you.
This term, my teacher assigned me a project to grow a plant and
record its changes. I chose a sunflower and named it Sunny. I
put the seed into a nice container and carefully recorded its
changes. Each day, I watered and looked after Sunny with care.
It was fascinating to see how it slowly grew taller and stronger.
When I saw the sunflower grow well, I got a strong feeling of
One possible version:
satisfaction. And the funny shape of the sunflower made me
deeply interested in it.
The interesting experience taught me patience and the beauty of
nature. I hope you can try this too!

  阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
One of the most surprising trees in the world is the
baobab. This kind of tree mainly grows in Africa and Australia.
Sometimes, it is hard to tell trees apart because they look
like each other. But this is not a problem for the baobab. Its
appearance is quite different, so people can’t mistake it for
another tree. The baobab is very wide, and people often enjoy the
shade of it. In Western Australia, there is a large baobab known
as the Boab Prison Tree. In the past, it was so strong and wide
that it could hold a large group of people. The baobab can live
for more than 1 000 years.
People also call the baobab the “tree of life”. Its fruits are
very delicious treats in many African countries. The fruits are
also very healthy and people use them to make porridge and
soft drinks. What’s more, it can also provide water for people.
In order to adapt to dry climates, it absorbs(吸收) a lot of water
and stores it in its body when the rainy season comes. Some
baobabs can store up to 100 000 litres(升) .
But in recent years, many baobabs are dying because of
climate change. Scientists are trying hard to take action to save
the special species.
10.Where does the baobab mainly grow

In Africa and Australia.
11.Can people mistake the baobab for another tree

12.How long can the tree live

13.Why can the baobab provide water for people

No, they can’t.
More than 1 000 years.
Because the baobab absorbs a lot of water and stores it in its body when the rainy season comes.
14.Do you agree on calling the baobab the “tree of life”
Why or why not

Yes, I do. Because it gives people healthy fruits and
provides them with water.
