Unit 3 Sports and Fitness Listening and Speaking听说课教学设计
I. Analysis of the learning Contents
This is the Unit 3 in Book1 of New Standard English for Senior High School. The theme is "Sports and Fitness". In this unit something about sports is presented such as sports events, sportsmanship and the culture of sports. In this listening and speaking part, the text is about one person invites his or her friends to a sports event and their opinions about sports, which is related to students' daily life and arouse interest of students. It calls for students to enjoy sports, learn from the sportsmanship and have a general understanding of sports culture.
II. Analysis of the students
Senior one students are full of curiosity and thirsty for knowledge. They can better obtain basic information such as what, when and where, but they still need to improve in combing and integrating information. In terms of oral expression, students have a general understanding of how to invite friends to a sports event, but their grasp of the use of some sentence patterns is not accurate and the relevant knowledge reserve is not systematic and comprehensive.
III. Learning objectives
1. learning aims concerning linguistic knowledge
Students can have a general understanding of the following expressions of how to invite on the basis of listening.
Would you like to… / How about… / Do you want to… / Why not do…
(Justification: Language is the basics of English learning. The purpose of learning the language knowledge is to develop the language application ability, which can contribute to the daily communication.)
2. learning aims concerning learning abilities
1)Students are able to catch the key information according to change of the stress, intonation and pronunciation in the listening material.
2)Students are able to present an oral invitation to a sports event and express own ideas clearly and logically.
(Justification: students should not only learn the knowledge, but use and adjust English strategies actively and expend English channels so as to increase the efficacy of English learning.)
3. learning aims concerning thinking capacities
1)Students can analyze the attitude or intention of the speaker by the stress, tone or intonation while listening.
2)Students are able to organize and summarize the expressions of how to invite to a sports event and voice their own opinions about sportsmanship logically.
(Justification: Cultivating thinking capacity helps students enhance their ability to analyze and solve the problems.)
4.learning aims concerning cultural awareness and the passion for sports
1)Students can show great concern on the sports events in reality.
2)Students can acquire sports cultural language and arouse passion for sports.
(Justification: students should understand the mainstream sports around the world and the common pursuits of sportsmanship at home and aboard according to the General Senior High School Curriculum Standards.
IV. Important points
Students are able to invite a friend to a sports event appropriately by using the expressions learned in class.
(Justification: This topic is common in daily communication and the expressions of how to invite is practical.)
V. Difficult points
Students can infer the key information of materials by the change of the stress and intonation.
(Justification: Students’ ability of combining and integrating the information is still deficient, which is difficult for students to make inferences and state own ideas.)
VI. Teaching methods
Task-based language teaching is adapted in this lesson. One task concerning the main idea of this listening material is designed for students to complete by solo. Then the next task for students is to listen for specific information and catch some useful expressions of inviting. Moreover, students will finish the task that is to invite friends to a sports event in pairs with the words, sentence patterns and expressions. Finally, some statements are presented and students exchange their opinions in groups. These tasks designed for students is a process from input to output. Consequently, students will consolidate they learned in time and are completely involved in learning.
Ⅶ. Instructions on students learning strategies
1.Listening strategy
Students need to develop some listening strategies such as intensive listening, extensive listening, global listening, selective listening and so on. In this lesson students are instructed to develop the mentioned listening strategies above.
2.Communicative strategy
It is important to make students learn that some non-verbal devices such as gestures, facial expressions, body language contribute to verbal expressions to state themselves clearly and logically in the oral presentation in group and class.
3.Resource strategy
Students should develop their ability to collect useful and needed information from a vast sea of information in the information era. Simultaneously, students are required to search information to complete the tasks in the assignment after class.
Ⅷ. Learning procedures
The pre--listening stage
Step 1: lead in
Activity ①: show the theme big idea of the unit
(Justification: This step is to introduce the theme of unit to students and let them have a better understanding of this unit.)
Activity ②: introduce Pierre de Coubertin
(Justification: This step is to introduce Pierre de Coubertin to students and let them have a better understanding of Olympic Games and sports. )
Activity ③: Watch and learn about some players and sports
Students are required to watch a video about Paris Olympics promotional video and learn about some famous players and sports events.
(Justification: These tasks are designed for students to present the background information, which can arouse interest of students and prepare them for the next step.)
The while-listening stage
Step 2: Extensive listening
Activity① : Listen and choose
Students are required to listen to conversation 1 and choose the main idea of it.
While listening, students are required to try to catch the key words instead of remembering each word.
(Justification: students can perceive the change of the stress and know how to listen for the gist through this activity.)
Step 3: Intensive listening
Activity ②: Listen and answer the questions
(Justification: While listening, students can know how to listen for specific information accumulate some expressions of how to voice their opinions.)
Activity ③: Listen and repeat
Students will listen to the audio and read after it. They should pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation.
(Justification: Through these two activities, students can master the main content of this listening material and through intensive listening, students will enhance their ability to get specific information.)
The post-listening stage
Step 4: Oral practice
Activity①: Pair work --Make a conversation to invite your friends.
Students are required to have a conversation about the expressions that they use to invite others and to accept or refuse the invitation. Write them down in the table. How to make an invitation and how to accept / refuse an invitation
Activity ②: Brainstorming
Students are required to have a brainstorm in group of 4 about the question What benefits can sports bring to us
(Justification: In this part, students can apply the expressions they learned to oral practice, which can examine the learning outcomes and practice the oral English.)
Step 5: Summary and Assignment
Summary: Let students conclude the content of the lesson and summarize with the whole class.
Assignment:Try to make another conversation with your partner, inviting him/her to one sports
event or activity in real life, tomorrow choose 3 pairs to show yourselves.
(Justification: Reviewing the important knowledge in this lesson can deepen students’ impression and form good study habits.)
Step 6: watch a video and learn about the quotes from sports celebrities
(Justification: let students learn about sports celebrities and sports quotes. More importantly, stimulate the passion for sports.
