Race at River’s Edge
When we arrived in Tournus, my cousin Gabriel and I parked our bikes and walked to the town square. We’d just ridden 33 kilometers, and we were starving. We planned to get lunch and then ride back to Macon, a small city in France on the Sa ne River. I was spending the summer there with Gabriel’s family. It was market day. Locals are busy filling their baskets with groceries. Tourists hunted for souvenirs. Gabriel and I bought a long, thin loaf of bread and some cheese I’m obsessed with. It tastes awesome.
As we ate, I noticed a girl wearing a USA Basketball T-shirt. She smiled at us. Basketball is big in France too. You can even watch NBA games on TV. The girl stopped to shop with someone that I guessed was her mom because they looked so much alike.
I saw them again by the river. They sat on a bench enjoying their snacks in front of a long, narrow riverboat named Voyageur, which had docked (停靠码头) earlier. Then they boarded the boat. It was preparing to leave. As the ship started to pull away, I spotted a colorful shopping bag on the bench. The girl had left it!
I looked up. Some passengers were gathering on the upper deck of the riverboat, including the girl and her mom.
I held up the bag and waved it to get their attention while Gabriel called to them.
When the girl noticed the bag, she opened her mouth in surprise. But her face fell as the boat started to pull away from the dock. She didn’t think she’d get her stuff back.
“Maybe we can throw it to her, Hugo! ” Gabriel said.
“It’s too light, ” I said. “It would end up in the river. We have to find a way to return it! ”
Running alongside the boat, Gabriel learned from a sailor that the boat’s next stop was Macon—our destination as well.
“Do you think we can keep up ” I asked.
Gabriel laughed. “We’re about to find out! ”

写作示范:
第一篇
I threw the bag over my shoulder, and we set off.
The sun was high and unforgiving, beating down on us as we pedaled with all our might. Our legs quickly grew tired, but the thought of the girl's disappointed face spurred us on. The road was uneven, and we had to swerve to avoid potholes while keeping an eye on the boat in the distance. Gabriel led the way, shouting words of encouragement. Sweat poured down our faces, but we didn't dare slow down.
We finally got to Macon, thinking we’d failed, when Gabriel suddenly shouted, “I see them! ”
My heart leaped with joy. We ditched our bikes and rushed towards the dock. The girl and her mom were just getting off. When she saw us, her eyes widened in disbelief. “You guys actually chased us all the way here ” she exclaimed. We handed her the bag, panting. She rummaged through it and pulled out a small token, pressing it into our hands. “Thank you so much. This means the world to me.” We grinned at each other, knowing our efforts had been worth it.
第二篇
I threw the bag over my shoulder, and we set off.
Wind whistled past our ears as we sped up, our bikes creaking under the strain. We passed by the beautiful French countryside, but had no time to admire it. I could feel the weight of the bag and our responsibility. Gabriel's face was set with determination, his muscles tensed as he pumped the pedals. Every now and then, we'd lose sight of the boat and panic, only to spot it again.
We finally got to Macon, thinking we’d failed, when Gabriel suddenly shouted, “I see them! ”
A surge of energy coursed through me. We abandoned our bikes and sprinted forward. The girl and her mom were walking away from the dock. “Wait!” we yelled. They turned around, surprised. When we handed over the bag, the girl beamed. “I thought I'd never see this again. You two are heroes!” She gave us a big hug. At that moment, all our exhaustion vanished, replaced by a warm sense of accomplishment.
【答案】
I threw the bag over my shoulder, and we set oft. Without hesitation, we grabbed our bikes and quickly calculated the time it would take to beat the boat to Macon. It would be close, but if we rode fast enough, we just might make it. Gabriel and I jumped on our bikes and started pedaling as hard as we could. The wind blew against our faces as we raced along the river's edge, the boat visible in the distance. The road was narrow and uneven at times, but we pushed forward, determined to return the girl's bag. With each passing minute, my legs burned, but I couldn't give up.
We finally got to Macon, thinking we'd failed, when Gabriel suddenly shouted, "I see them!" I saw Gabriel waiting by the dock, a triumphant grin on his face. The boat had just arrived, and the girl was joyfully holding her shopping bag, waving to us in gratitude. My cousin Gabriel and I were very happy. We not only helped others, but also surpassed ourselves. The sunshine was bright, and our mood was also bright.
