Sally was a student. It was going to be her mother’s birthday.
She wanted to buy her a present that would be nice and useful
but not expensive.
A week before her mother’s birthday, she went shopping after
a quick and simple lunch. When she had been looking for half
an hour, she found a shop that was selling cheap umbrellas, and
decided to take a black one, since her mother had lost hers the
month before. She thought, “My mother could carry that when
she is wearing clothes of any color.” So she decided to buy a
lovely black umbrella. She took it back to school and keep it
with her until her classes finished.
On her way back home in the train that evening, she felt so
hungry because she had such a small lunch that she went along
to the buffet car(餐车) for a sandwich and a cup of coffee. She
had left the black umbrella on her seat in the compartment(车
厢), but when she got back, it had gone! When she had left the
compartment, there had been no other passengers in it,but when
she returned there were three.
Sally began to cry when she saw that the umbrella was no
longer there. The other passengers felt very sorry for her and
asked what the matter was. She told them that the black umbrel-
la she had bought for her mother was gone, and that she had to
get off at the next station. After the three other passengers
heard it, they asked her for her mother’s address so that they
could send the umbrella to her if someone had taken it by mis-

Gift giving is common. Over time, different cultures have de-
veloped their own gift-giving customs and traditions.
Gift giving in China
In China, gifts are given on special days, such as birthdays, or
for special events like eating a dinner at a friend’s home.
While it’s true that a gift is just a gift, what is more important
is the meaning behind the gift. In China, some gifts need to be
avoided including clocks, shoes, umbrellas, knives, green hats,
anything in groups of four and anything in black or white.

Gift giving in America
Whether a gift is given or not, greeting cards are often used for birthdays, Christmas, Father’s/Mother’s Day, weddings(婚礼),
and Easter. In America, common gifts are candies or toys for
children, and chocolate, fine food, books, clothes and tools for
adults.
After receiving a gift, people show thanks to the person by say-
ing“Thank you so much”or“This is too nice”. Hugs or kisses may be exchanged. Thank-you cards are usually be sent out in return in the same week when the gifts are received.

Donna Brown, a 14-year-old girl, was very sick. She had a bad heart. “Donna must have a new heart,” her doctor said, “or
she will die soon.” Felipe Green, Donna’s good friend, heard the news, he was very worried about Donna. He didn’t want her to die. He decided to give his heart to her because he knew he was going to die.

Then he talked to his mother about his idea. But his mother
didn’t pay much attention to him. “Felipe is just playing a
joke,” his mother thought. In fact, Felipe often had terrible
headaches and never told his mother about them.
One morning, he woke up with great pain and he couldn’t
breathe. The Greens hurried to send him to the hospital. The
doctors had bad news for the Greens, “Felipe’s brain is
dead.” The Greens were very sad. But Felipe’s mother re-
membered his words. She told the doctors to give Felipe’s
heart to Donna. The doctors did several tests. They said they
could give Felipe’s heart to Donna.
Everything was successful. Felipe’s heart was beating in Don-na’s chest(胸膛), but Donna didn’t know it. The doctors and her parents didn’t tell her until she was stronger. Donna was very th- ankful to the Greens. Every time the Greens saw Donna, they thought of Felipe. Donna has Felipe’s heart in her. That gives them great peace.
