One year after WildAid started its new program to protect ocean wildlife in China, Chinese world-famous pianist Lang Lang has joined the latest public campaign (运动), “Play Your Part in the Oceans Symphony” on Friday.
The campaign video public service announcement (PSA) impressed the public with Lang Lang playing his song “Stay”, greatly calling attention to the beauty and importance of protecting the marine life in China’s waters such as whale sharks, sea turtles, dolphins and spotted seals.
A new series of messages calls on the public to help protect marine biodiversity (生物多样性) by supporting marine protected areas (MPAs) and the protection of ocean wildlife. The campaign video PSA and billboards, which will be displayed across China, were released (发布) at a Beijing press event hosted by WildAid, with China Green Carbon Foundation and the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) of the Ministry of Natural Resources as key partners.
Ranked among “the world’s 100 most influential people” by Time magazine, Lang Lang has served as WildAid ambassador for more than 12 years and contributed to protecting endangered wildlife and nature.Speaking at the event he said, “we can all play our part in protecting our oceans by taking simple steps, such as refusing to eat endangered wildlife such as sea turtles, reporting illegal wildlife trade, and reducing the use of single-use plastics.”
WildAid also designed online activities for this campaign in which Lang Lang invites users to re-create his song “Stay” through the two most popular social platforms in China: Weibo and Tik Tok.
Lang Lang joined this campaign following a survey report conducted by WildAid and FIO that discusses public awareness of MPAs and marine biodiversity in China.
The report finds that more than 80% of the survey takers believe that MPAs are very important, but their understanding of the functions of MPAs is low.More than half do not know the term “marine biodiversity” and have not received enough information about marine protection.
“Play Your Part in the Oceans Symphony” campaign PSA and billboards will be given out at outdoor places across China, reaching millions of viewers.

In the summer months, fireflies (萤火虫) become lively, starting their “love stories”.Male fireflies fly around and a part of their belly (腹部) will light up.Then females sitting on the ground look up at the show and flash back to the males they like. They’re not going to mate (交配) unless they’ve exchanged these light signals (信号).
Firefly species have performed that for millions of years, lit only by the moon. Now humans are damaging their feelings, turning on street lights and LEDs at the fireflies’ summer party.
In the firefly world, it’s the females who are particularly turned off by man-made light.Owens, a researcher at Harvard University, led studies in experimental conditions and field conditions and found that male fireflies often keep flashing (闪光) under street lights and other kinds of overhead light, while female fireflies, active at night, basically shut down and stop reacting.
“Probably because they just can’t see the males very well,” Owens explained.“Typically male fireflies are looking down.Female fireflies are looking up at street lights and other light sources.”In lab conditions, not one of 20 pairs mated successfully under bright lights, while about half of firefly couples mated successfully in natural dim light.
In the last decade, the night sky became twice as bright due to the increasing use of LEDs, Owens said, which hurts the populations of fireflies. Sadly, no fireflies are protected under the Endangered Species Act presently.
“I like people to think about firefly extinction (灭绝) as sitting in a room of candles, and it’s beautiful,” said Sara Lewis, a professor of biology at Tufts University.“And if one or two of those candles went out, you probably don’t even notice it, but if that continues, eventually you are left sitting in complete darkness.”
5.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Exchanging light signals of love. B.Telling their love stories.
C.Mating and raising babies. D.Holding summer parties.
根据第一段的“Then females sitting on the ground...exchanged these light signals(信号).”
√
6.What is a serious danger of man-made light to fireflies
A.It makes the female blind.
B.It stops the female from reacting.
C.It causes them to get lost.
D.It forces the male to shut off.
根据第三段的“In the firefly world, it’s the females who are particularly turned off...basically shut down and stop reacting.”
√
7.What influences the success of firefly mating according to the research
A.The size of male and female.
B.The male and female mating time.
C.The brightness of surrounding light.
D.The number of firefly couples.
根据第四段的“In lab conditions, not one of 20 pairs mated successfully...in natural dim light.”
√
8.What does Sara Lewis say about the firefly extinction
A.It will surely happen eventually.
B.It produces a beautiful story.
C.It will come if nothing is done.
D.It happens in a room of candles.
根据最后一段的“I like people to think about firefly extinction...eventually you are left sitting in complete darkness.”

UNIT 2 WILDLIFE PROTECTION
A
You may be attracted by pictures of animals in the wild. You might have imagined yourself taking pictures of animals that are seldom seen in the city.If you do get that chance, you may want to consider the following tips or rules.
First of all, a lot of professional photographers give respect (尊重) to these animals and the environment they are in.Just remember that you should respect the animals and the environment in case these animals bite or attack you.
Keep in mind that you are taking pictures of real, live, wild animals.A wild animal may bite to protect itself. You must be aware while taking their pictures and be gentle in all your movements.Do not feed the animals, or interact (互动) with animals that are sleeping or caring for their young.
Change the flash of your camera to natural light, so the animals will not be frightened or surprised when you start shooting.Animals do not react well when they are surprised.Be very patient.Make sure you are aware of the changes in behavior of the animal and its emotions.Be familiar with the animals’ natural habitat.
Now if those rules are clear, it is time for planning.Consider the weather;some animals do not go out when it is raining while some animals love the rain. Therefore, a little research on the weather will not hurt. You should consider taking pictures after sunrise and before sunset. Now if the animal is active at night, then you should prepare to fight against not only the wild but also the darkness.
An adventure in the wild will make you very excited. However, you should be well prepared, have experts to back you up, and also a permit (许可证) for doing the photo shoot. If you do not have any of these, then maybe you should consider visiting the zoo instead.

Tariq Qaiser, an architect, is trying to protect mangroves (红树林).The trees could save Pakistan’s largest city Karachi, sitting on the Arabian Sea, from natural disaster. He comes to Bundal Island several times a week to document the illegal cutting of mangrove trees.Very often, “You can’t hear a single bird because the chain saws (锯) are so loud. The trees are cut down illegally for firewood,” he says, shaking his head.Besides, developers clear the mangroves to make room for construction.
Karachi has a hot climate, and its concrete buildings and paved roads make it even hotter.Offshore, there are islands where mangroves grow. They could be the key to slowing climate change.Mangrove forests pull carbon dioxide out of the air, holding four times as much of the planet-warming gas as other forests can. They support diverse ecosystems. As sea levels rise with global warming, the trees could play a big role in protecting coastal cities like Karachi from flooding.Karachi’s mangroves are disappearing. But its numbers are rising in other parts of Pakistan. With replanting efforts, the country has tripled (使成为三倍) its mangrove coverage over the past 30 years.
Qaiser’s work may have worked.Recently, a court in Karachi declared Bundal Island’s mangroves to be protected forests. But unforested parts of the island remain unprotected, and developers want to build there.City officials say this could provide much-needed housing and bring in billions of dollars. They claim that some of that money could be used to plant mangroves in other parts of Pakistan.
Ecologist Rafiul Haq appreciates Qaiser’s “extraordinary work” educating the public about mangroves. But he wishes Qaiser would look at the bigger picture.“Only 7% of Pakistan’s mangroves are in Karachi,” Haq says.He thinks it’s wrong to focus on the losses in 7% of the country while ignoring the success in 93% of it.But Qaiser believes it’s important to protect every bit.

As humans encroach (侵入) more and more on wildlife habitats, animals are finding that the best way to survive isn’t to pack up and move—it’s to adapt to the night life.A variety of previously daytime animals such as foxes, deer and boars have become active at night to avoid human activity out of fear. But this nighttime switch comes with its own risks.
Researchers looked at how 62 species of animals on six continents changed their behavior in response to human activities such as hunting, farming, and development. The studies employed various technologies to follow the animals, from GPS trackers to motion-activated cameras.
Once night falls, the animals surveyed became far more active than they were before humans arrived, hunting and looking for food in the dark. For example, animals that used to split their activity evenly between day and night typically increased their nighttime activity to 68%.
The team also found the animals responded similarly to these human encroachments, regardless of whether human activity directly affected them. So, a deer might become more active at night simply because it sees humans hiking nearby, not because it’s being hunted.
The researchers believe these nighttime behaviors not only allow humans and animals to coexist more peacefully, they may be able to give us hints as to how to plan conservation efforts accordingly, such as limiting human activity during times when a specific species is more active. But moving to the nightlife could also have downsides for these animals.A nighttime lifestyle can reduce an animal’s ability to hunt and find food successfully and can even affect its ability to find a mate.Switching to a nighttime lifestyle can affect natural patterns of life even if these animals are doing so to reduce their interaction with humans. So, just because animals are becoming more active at night doesn’t mean they’ve escaped the influence of humans.
1.Why are animals becoming more active at night
A.It is easier to find food at night.
B.It is easier to escape being hunted.
C.They can be less affected by human.
D.They have got used to nightlife.

A.They followed and watched the animals.
B.They used modern technologies.
C.They compared different animals.
D.They found more animals at night.

√
3.What can we infer from the fourth paragraph

√
4.Which word can possibly replace the underlined word “downsides” in paragraph 5
A.Dangers. B.Strengths.
C.Possibilities. D.Disadvantages.

We can’t stop __7__ and celebrating their dance from our window. We fed them with the __8__ on our tablecloth after every meal. And we have __9__ them with every kind of bases and stands on our terrace (露台).
__10__, they feel at ease in our backyard. And that has led them to __11__ courage to slip into our house.Perhaps because they have the feeling that we don’t consider them __12__, but friendly neighbors, who only leave some wastes from time to time.
The presence of our dear sparrow holds magical consistency with real life. And we’ve been having lovely sparrows coming over lately, whose presence __13__ us out of our dull daily routines and shows us the hidden beauty and charm.
Like different human beings, these sparrows often take different forms. We’ve met sparrows like those, of all shapes and colors. And they’re everywhere.Perhaps all of them are willing to call our __14__,making us know they are there. They only ask from us not to be afraid of them or feel uneasy to their __15__.
