M: I'm at the counter of the hotel. I'll be back home soon. Just wait for me.
Text 4
M: It doesn't make any sense to go home for the New Year now.

M: I think so.
Text 5
M: My boss promised me a pay raise, but later he kept silent and never mentioned it at all.
W: Don't be sad. Tomorrow is another day.
Text 6
W: Why don't we buy a car, dear?
M: I have been thinking about it for a long time. I think it necessary for us to buy one. We live so far away from my company.
W: Yes. With a car, you wouldn't have to catch a bus to work. It can save a lot of time.
M: Sure, but we don't have enough money at present.
W: Why not borrow some from the bank? I think we won't have to borrow so much now.
M: Well, let's go downtown and have a look.
Text 7
M: Hello, I'd like to speak to Tom, please.

W: No, just tell me something about it. In my opinion, different countries have different body language, right?
M: Quite right. But most body language means the same thing in different countries. For example, putting up a hand means “May I ask a question?” A smile and a hand-shake show “welcome”.
W: Oh, I see. Nodding the head of course means “Yes.” Don't you think so?

W: From your main department store in Bedford road.

M: I see, I will contact the manager and tell him to replace your walkman. You can go to the store anytime after today, and they will replace it for you.
W: Thank you very much indeed. Bye.
Text 10
Aren't you glad that mothers and fathers give names to their children? Names are the quickest and easiest and the most friendly way to say who's who. Another nice thing about names is that they do not change as people do. Yesterday Mary's hair was long. Today her hair is short. But her name is still Mary. On his birthday Uncle Brown did not have a moustache. At Christmas time he did. But his name is still Brown. People are always changing, a little or a lot. But people's names remain the same.
A name sometimes says something nice about someone. Girls' names often come from words meaning “pretty” “happy” “loving” ... Boy's names are often borrowed from words which mean “strong” “brave”.Do you know how your own name came into being?

Have you been to Hoover Dam before? Do you know anything about it? If not, I think you had better go to visit it and enjoy its beautiful scenery if you are free some day.
Many years ago, a big dam, which lies between the states of Arizona and Nevada, was built to control the Colorado River. This dam was built so that it could protect the land and houses along the river from being washed away.
This big dam is in the Black Canyon. It is possible to drive a car from one side of the river to the other on a road which is on top of the dam. The dam is so big that there is a lift inside, which goes down forty-four floors from the road to the bottom. There is enough concrete (混凝土) used in the dam to build a highway from New York to San Francisco. It took thousands of people five years to build the dam.
This dam was called Boulder Dam when it was completed in 1936. Later it was renamed Hoover Dam in honor of a president of the United States. Hoover Dam, one of the highest dams in the world, has been playing an important role in many ways. It attracts many visitors coming from all over the world.

Have you ever been sad because of failure? Please remember, for often, achieving what you set out to do is not the most important thing.
A boy decided to dig a deep hole behind his house. As he was working, a couple of older boys stopped by to watch. “What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors. “I want to dig a hole all the way through the earth!” the boy answered excitedly. The older boys began to laugh, telling him that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible. After a while, the boy picked up a jar. He showed it to the visitors. It was full of all kinds of stones and insects. Then he said calmly and confidently, “Maybe I can't finish digging all the way through the earth, but look at what I've found during this period!”
The boy's goal was far too difficult, but it did cause him to go on. And that is what a goal is for—to cause us to move in the direction we have chosen, in other words, to cause us to keep working!
Not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end up with a success. Not every dream will come true. But when you fall short of your aim, maybe you can say, “Yes, but look what I've found along the way! There are so many wonderful things having come into my life because I tried to do something!” It is in the digging that life is lived. It is the unexpected joy on the journey that really makes sense.
25. The older boys laughed at the boy because he was thought to be ________.
A. brave B. impolite
C. foolish D. warm-hearted
26. Why did the boy show the jar to the older boys?
A. To drive them away.
B. To show what he had found in digging.
C. To show how beautiful the jar was.
D. To attract them to join him in the work.
答案与解析 B 由第二段男孩所说的“Maybe I can't finish digging all the way through the earth, but look at what I've found during this period!”
27. What can be learnt from the fourth paragraph of the text?
A. No dream can come true.
B. All work will end successfully.
C. Goals shouldn't be set too high.
D. Goals will make us work harder.
28. The best title for the text should be ________.
A. Joy in the Journey
B. A Boy Dug a Hole
C. No Pains, No Gains
D. Failure Is the Mother of Success
C
Have you wondered about the amount of time we spend talking about food and been surprised? We are always asking questions such as“Have you ever eaten?” and“What did you have for lunch?”Yet, if you travel from one country to another, you might find that other nations think differently about food. People plan to think that what they eat is normal and what everyone else eats is strange. In most parts of Asia, for example, no meal is complete without rice but in England, rice is the exception and people prefer to eat potatoes, in the Middle East, bread accompanies every meal.
Eating, like so many things we do, becomes a habit that is difficult to change. The Americans seem to like drinking lots of orange juice and coffee; the English prefer to drink tea four or five times a day; the Australians prefer to drink a lot of beer; the French, like wine every day.
People in different countries also like eating different kinds of meat and even within countries, different regions will have different likes and dislikes, especially in large countries like China and the former Soviet Union. In Hong Kong and the south of China, some people enjoy eating snakes but in the north of China, most people refuse to eat them. The French think that horse meat is delicious but most English people are terrified at the thought of eating it. The New Zealanders eat a lot of lamb and mutton, but never goat. The Japanese say that they do not like eating lamb and mutton because of their smell, but that they really enjoy eating raw fish more than anything else.
So it seems that there is often very little common sense about what is nicest to eat or drink in different parts of the world although we may talk on the subject of food for hours. However, as people everywhere enjoy eating what they have always eaten, there seems very little point in trying to change traditional eating habits.
29. The topic people spend a lot of time talking about is ________.
A. lunch B. breakfast
C. dinner D. food
30. Bread is necessary in every meal in ________.
A. the Middle East B. America
C. England D. Asia
31. In England, people prefer to eat ________.
A. rice B. potatoes
C. corn D. bread
32. English people like eating horse meat,do they?
A. No, they do. B. Yes, they do.
C. No, they don't. D. Yes, they don't.
D
I lost my sight when I was 4 years old by failing off a boxcar and landing on my head. Now, I am 32. I can vaguely remember the brightness of sunshine and what color red is. It would be wonderful to see again. But a calamity (灾难) can do strange things to people.
It occurred to me the other day that I might not have come to love life so, as I do, if I hadn't been blink I believe in life now. I am not so sure that I would have believed in it so deeply, otherwise. Life, I believe, asks a continuous series of adjustments to reality. The more readily a person is able to make these adjustments, the more meaningful his own private world becomes. The adjustment is never easy. I was bewildered (不知所措的) and afraid, but I was lucky. My parents and my teachers saw something in me—oh, a potential to live you might call it—which I didn't see. And they made me want to fight it out with blindness.
The hardest lesson I had to learn was to believe in myself. When I was a youngster, once a man gave me an indoor baseball. I thought he was laughing at me, and I was hurt. “I can't use this,” I said. “Take it with you,” he urged me, “and roll it around.”
The words stuck in my head: “Roll it around, roll it around.” By rolling the ball, I could listen where it went. This gave me an idea—how to achieve a goal I had thought impossible: playing baseball. At Philadelphia's Overbrook School for the Blind, I invented a successful variation of baseball. We called it groundball.
All my life, I have set ahead of me a series of goals, and then tried to reach them one at a time. I had to learn my limitations I would fail sometimes anyway, but on the average, I made progress.
33. What did the author learn from playing the indoor baseball?
A. He could achieve what had been thought impossible.
B. A blind man could enjoy himself as a normal person.
C. Not all the people are unkind.
D. Great potential of invention was stored in a blind man.
34. What do we know about the author's parents and teachers from the passage?
A. They taught him how to adjust himself to his life after becoming blind.
B. They were quite concerned about him because of his blindness.
C. They let him see his own potential to live a normal life.
D. They encouraged him to overcome the difficulties brought by his blindness.
35. What attitude does the author have towards life?
A. Disappointing. B. Regretful.
C. Thankful. D. Doubtful.

How time flies! I've been in Russia for two months. This is the first time that I have away from my family for such a long time. I am now boarding with my host family, with its help I've soon got used to live without my parents around. Mary, a classmate of me, like many other Russian girls, are nice and lively. We became friends short after we met each other. Although her English is a little hard to understand, we enjoy chatting and we usually talk a lot about our own families. We're all amazed that the Chinese culture and Russian culture are so different. Now, we are planning to have a small party the next Sunday, then Mary will introduce me to some of her friends. I just can't wait to meet them.

范文
Dear_Mary,
How_nice_to_hear_from_you!_In_your_letter_you_asked_me_how_to_keep_healthy. I would like to give you some advice.
As you know, we teenagers grow very fast, so we need plenty of nutritious foods, such as fish, meat, and beans, especially fresh vegetables and fruits. You'd better not eat too much food rich in sugar or fat. Besides, you should take physical exercise regularly instead of studying in the classroom all the time. For example, you can play basketball with your friends or swim after school. What's more, having enough sleep is very important. So I advise that you should have at least eight hours of sleep every day and not stay up too late in the evening. Only in this way can you keep fit.
Yours,
David
