Harvey Sutton spent nearly seven months hiking with his parents, walking the thousands of kilometers that make up the complete Appalachian Trail. Harvey, or “little man”, was just 4 years old when he started, and celebrated his 5th birthday on the trail.
The Appalachian Trail, which many people call simply the “AT”, is a 3,530-kilometer hiking trail that runs through the forests of the Appalachian Mountains and passes through 14 states in all. Hiking the Appalachian Tran is tough, and only one out of every four hikers completes all the sections of the trail. The people who hike it must carry everything they need with them, including tents, sleeping bags and other supplies, along with food and water.
Harvey’s parents, Josh and Cassie Sutton, have been hiking with Harvey since he was two years old. They made reasonable arrangements, and especially prepared him for hiking the AT by starting out with lots of shorter walks and hikes. It took Harvey and his family 209 days to complete the entire AT. Every day the family would wake up around 5:30 in the morning. They would have breakfast and pack up their tents and sleeping bags before setting off through the woods. In general, the family hiked about 16 kilometers a day before stopping to set up camp again.
During his days on the AT, Harvey liked to use his imagination. This helped him walk more quickly and have fun while he hiked. He played games with his mom and dad and other hikers, Kart Sakas hiked with the Suttons through seven states. Mr. Sakas said Harvey didn’t seem to get tired. When other hikers were worn out at the end of the day, Harvey was still eager for a game.
Completing the AT taught Harvey and his parents how to work as a team and how to take on challenges together. Harvey has now turned 5 and has started kindergarten. But at some point in the future, he says, “I want to hike the AT again!”
4.What can we learn about hiking on the AT

Chinese people love food made of flour, whether it be dumplings, or flatbread. In the hands of sill artisans (手艺人), flour is made into lovely models of people or animals to be enjoyed and played with, which brings a unique kind of pleasure. This art form is called dough figurine (面塑). Among the various at styles of dough figurines, Beijing’s Dough Figurine Lang is a unique folk art, which is filled with the rich history and customs of the capital city. Their delicate and lovely handicrafts are storytellers of old and new Beijing. In 2008, it was included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.
It was created by Lang Shao’an. Most of the dough figurines are animals and characters from legends, historical stories, and local operas. The finished product is either put at the end of a thin stick, or on a table for display. Some are mostly for children to eat or play with, with simple forms and vivid decorations, while some are delicate pieces of artwork for display only. For this reason, during the making process they are often mixed with additives (添加剂) to prevent them from breaking up, being eaten by insects or growing moldy. Over the course of his long career, Lang Shao’an developed a set of sill fingers with an elegant artistic sense.
Lang Jiaziyu, born in 1995, is the third-generation inheritor of Dough Figurine Lang. When he was 15, he created Beijing Olympic Mascot shaped dough figurines which were highly praised. He looks a bit more fashionable than other folk artisans. In his skilled hands, pop culture icons such as figures based on Marvel comics characters and Chinese mythological figure Nezha with smoky makeup, are resonating with young people.
Like most of the other intangible cultural heritage handicrafts in China, Dough Figurine Lang does not get as much attention from the public. Few young people are willing to take the time to master a skill that does not make money, which has led to a decline in the number of those who are devoted to the handicraft. Good handicrafts need the devotion of artisans from one generation to another.

C.It shows people’s lifestyles and beliefs.
D.It is popular with both tourists and the locals.

A.To make dough figurines taste good.
B.To keep colors brighter and last longer.
C.To help shape dough into various forms.
D.To better preserve the finished products.
10.What is the third paragraph mainly about
A.Suggestions for other folk artisans.
B.Different art styles of dough figurines.
C.Lang Jiaziyu’s achievements as an artisan.
D.The popularity of modern dough figurines.
11.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To call on people to master a skill.
B.To appeal to people to value this folk art.
C.To teach people ways to appreciate the handicraft.
D.To persuade people to protect national cultural heritage.
Digital reading appears to be destroying habits of “deep reading”. Astonishing numbers of people with years of schooling are in effect illiterate. This month’s Ljubljana Manifesto (宣言) explains: “The digital field may promote more reading than ever in history, but it also offers many temptations to read in a superficial and scattered (零散的) manner — or even not to read at all. This increasingly endangers higher-level reading.”
That’s frightening, because “higher-level reading” has been essential to civilization. It enabled the enlightenment and an international increase in empathy. Without it, we would suffer a lot. As the Ljubljana Manifesto notes, “as much as one-third of Europeans struggle even with lower-level reading skills.” More than one-fifth of adults in the US “fall into the illiterate/functionally illiterate category”. Separately, post-pandemic reading scores for American 13-year-olds are the lowest in decades. And the Washington-based Center for Global Development recently estimated that literacy in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa among those with five years of schooling has decreased by 10% this past half century.
Experts in the Ljubljana Manifesto record the demerits of digital reading: “Recent studies of various kinds indicate a decline of critical and conscious reading, slow reading, non-strategic reading and long-form reading.” When you read a book on paper, you can be entirely inside the experience, absorb hundreds of pages of details thoroughly and begin to capture the world’s complexity. Online, says Maryanne Wolf of UCLA, we are “skimming, scanning, scrolling”. The medium is the message: doing deep reading on your phone is as hard as playing tennis with your phone. Recently, a bright 11-year-old told me I was wasting time on books: he absorbed more information faster from Wikipedia. He had a point. But digital readers also absorb more misinformation and seldom absorb fine perspectives.
In short, as professors from Northwestern University foresaw in 2005, we are returning to the days when only an elite (精英) “reading class” consumes long texts, which is worrying.
12.What can we learn about digital reading from paragraph 1
A.Digital reading has solved the problem of illiteracy.
B.Digital reading has lessened the practice of deep reading.
C.Digital reading has made deep reading accessible to wider readers.
D.Digital reading has aroused a greater appreciation for deep reading.
13.What is the purpose of the figures used in paragraph 2
A.To display the popularity of digital reading.
B.To highlight the advantages of deep reading.
C.To present the unfavorable situation of literacy.
D.To stress the illiterate’s lower-level reading skills.
14.What does the underlined word “demerits” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Effects. B.Depths. C.Features. D.Drawbacks.
15.What might be talked about in the following paragraph
A.Advantages of digital reading. B.Benefits of higher-level reading.
C.Ways to encourage digital reading. D.Measures to practice deep reading.
The health of our feet plays a significant role in our overall well-being, particularly for those engaged in physical activities and sports. 16 In this article, we will consider the importance of sports shoes in promoting foot health and injury prevention.
Sports shoes are carefully designed to provide support, cushioning (缓冲), and stability when worn for specific activities. 17 For instance, basketball shoes are crafted with ankle support because of the fast-paced, high-impact nature of the game. Similarly, running shoes combine cushioning and shock absorption to reduce the repetitive stress placed on the feet and lower limbs during running.
One of the most critical aspects of injury prevention and foot health is ensuring that your sports shoes fit correctly. When you select sports shoes, it’s essential to consider comfort and proper fit. 18 Those that are too loose may lead to instability and increase the risk of injury.
Investing in quality sports shoes can significantly reduce the likelihood of suffering injuries during physical activity. 19 Moreover, specialized features like ankle support systems provide added protection against common sports-related injuries, allowing athletes to perform at their best with reduced risk.
20 Whether you’re joining in high-impact activities like basketball or low-impact exercise such as walking or yoga, selecting the appropriate sports shoes is essential. Consulting with footwear experts can help you identify the most suitable options based on your activity level, foot type, and any pre-existing conditions or injuries.
A.All sports shoes are designed according to customers’ demands.
B.Shoes that are too tight (紧的) can limit blood flow and cause discomfort.
C.Naturally, each type of sports shoes has their advantages and disadvantages.
D.Each type is engineered with special features connected with a specific sport.
E.Right sports shoes can greatly impact your foot health and help prevent injuries.
F.Seeking professional help can ensure the sports shoes you choose will meet your needs.
G.Well-designed shoes with cushioning and support help absorb shock and spread out pressure.

The Fall and Rise of a Star
I was certain that every student in my high school drama class noticed the paper shaking in my hands as I stood up to try out for the lead role in the play, I wasn’t there by choice, but rather because the teacher required that each of us have a try for a part.
As a “mode!” student, I went along with the request, even though it filled me with fear. I was small for my age, wore secondhand clothes, and cried easily. I desperately wished to remain in my seat and disappear into the background. However, there I was standing, on stage. Reading lines (台词), at least, was something I liked, So, I began to read.
Within moments, the fear was gone. I was reading the part for the main character, “Star,” who possessed an optimistic view on life despite being an orphan (孤儿). I wasn’t an orphan myself, but I felt like one. My father had left us, and my mother worked during the day, attended school at night and spent her weekends buried in homework, It was easy for me to believe that Star’s words were also my own. I finished reading and quickly returned to my seat. When the teacher announced the cast list and called my name, I was lost in my thoughts.
“Patty,” she repeated, “you are Star, Come and collect your lines.”
“This cannot be! How is it possible ” With a racing heart, I approached the teacher to get the pages.
I practiced every day — while walking to school, during lunch breaks, before bedtime, and even on weekends. In the beginning, I was worried about forgetting my lines, but I managed to learn them by heart. My confidence was gradually growing.
Then came the rehearsals (排练). It was during this stage that I began to doubt my confidence once again, I was too nervous to act, I frequently forgot my lines. Then after several failures, I finally reached my breaking point. I ran out towards the stairs and started to cry, “I can’t do it!”

【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了如今世界各地的人体重越来越超标,主要是由于农村地区的体重指数(BMI)增加了,并分析了其中的原因。
【解析】36.考查连词。句意:在一项对200个国家33年体重指数趋势的研究中,科学家们发现,世界各地的人们体重越来越重,而这主要是由于农村地区体重指数的增加。分析句子结构可知,that people worldwide are getting heavier和that most of the rise is due to gains in BMI in rural areas.
increase by表示“增加了”;increase to表示“增加到”。

Suddenly, I felt several gentle hands on my arms. Voices enveloped me, and a warm hand took hold of mine. Through tear-filled eyes, I looked up at concerned faces. The teacher and some of my classmates had followed me. “Please don’t quit,” one of them said firmly. “You can do e on!” All of a sudden, the feeling of being like an orphan disappeared. My heart was filled with warmth. Greatly encouraged and deeply moved, I bravely returned to the stage after drying my tears. The rehearsals eventually went on smoothly, setting the stage for the final performance.
The day finally arrived and the performance received an enthusiastic response. The audience exploded in thunderous cheers and the teacher smiled with great satisfaction, as if saying “Great job!”. Getting off the stage, our classmates hugged each other excitedly, feeling proud of ourselves. I felt like a bird soaring through the sky. From that day on, whenever I encountered discouragement, I persevered. I will never forget that I was once a “fallen star” who managed to rise and shine through my own efforts, with the guidance of an exceptional teacher and the unexpected support of classmates.
