I used to know nothing about fairy tales (童话故事).To improve my reading skills, my mother gave me books that are a little bit difficult for me to understand. I didn’t even know that fairy tales existed until I attended a public school at the age of eight. Of course once I found out about books of this type, I would read them as quickly as I could.
Again and again, I begged my mother to take me to the library and let me choose a few. Finally, my request was granted (同意).After our return from the library, I started reading them eagerly and energetically, one after another. And I tried to put myself in the female character’s shoes. I found she had to suffer before the handsome prince came to her rescue(营救),and then they would live happily ever after.
I asked my mother why she never let me know about fairy tales. Looking me in the eyes, she told me that life is not like a fairy tale. There are good and bad things that will happen through life. In the end though, there is not a man that will come and "save" us. We do not need saving; we instead want someone in our lives to share those good moments and bad ones; we want someone we can rely on and also he or she can rely on us. Life is not about "happily ever after".
What then is life in Mom’s opinion? Life is the boy finding he loves every little thing about you, even the annoying (使人烦恼的) things. He holds your hands and says "come with me" and you live, laugh together. But things are not going to be perfect. You still have to face difficulties together, working hard for your relationship.
5.What happened to the author after she attended a public school?
A.She started to like reading.
B.She was crazy about fairy tales.
C.Her mother always took her to the library.
D.Her mother didn’t allow her to read books of fairy tales.
6.What’s the author’s understanding of fairy tales at first?
A.They reflect part of the real world.
B.They are unreal but worth reading.
C.The major characters always have a happy ending.
D.The major characters will be rewarded for their kindness.
7.How does the author’s mother like fairy tales?
A.A must for her kid.
B.Unnecessary for her kid.
C.Easy for her kid to understand.
D.Helpful in building her kid’s character.
8.The author’s mother intends to explain that .
A.life is not perfect B.no pain,no gain
C.life is about sharing D.one needs to live on his/her own
5.B
6.C
7.B
8.A
Again and again, I begged my mother to take me to the library and let me choose a few…After our return from the library, I started reading them eagerly and energetically, one after another."
I found she had to suffer before the handsome prince came to her rescue (营救),and then they would live happily ever after."
I asked my mother why she never let me know about fairy tales. Looking me in the eyes, she told me that life is not like a fairy tale."
Life is the boy finding he loves every little thing about you…and you live, laugh together. But things are not going to be perfect. You still have to face difficulties together, working hard for your relationship."

Phones Making Us Lazy
Do smartphones really make people smart?
It seems like they do. As The Washington Post noted, we can turn to the device to "quickly access facts both essential and trivial (琐碎的)" — the fastest way to a nearby cinema, how many centimeters equal an inch, or the name of the actor who starred in a TV series, etc.
With a smartphone, we don’t need to keep those pieces of information in our heads. However, new research suggests our devices are more than a convenience, as they are making us lazy thinkers. This research comes from The Brain in Your Pocket: Evidence that smartphones are used to supplant thinking, published recently in the journal Computers in Human Behavior.
Lead authors Nathaniel Barr and Gordon Pennycook of the psychology department at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada believe that people who are more "intuitive(直觉的)" thinkers than "analytical" thinkers — meaning, they’re more likely to rely on gut feelings to make decisions than to really analyze a problem and figure out a logical solution — also rely more on their phones than their own brainpower." Smartphones allow them to be even lazier than they would otherwise be," commented Science Daily.
What’s the difference between intuitive and analytical thinking? According to The Washington Post, the researchers used this problem in the study: "A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?"
An intuitive response is that the ball must cost 10 cents. It is wrong — 10 cents plus $1.10 equals $1.20, not $1.10.Only through analytic thinking can one get the correct response: The ball costs 5 cents.
It’s just this analytical thinking that smartphone users seem to avoid. In three studies involving 660 participants, the researchers examined different thinking styles. Then they looked at the participants’ smartphone habits.
"Participants in the study who demonstrated stronger analytical skills and a greater willingness to think spent less time using their smartphones’ search-engine fun_ction," reported Science Daily.
"It is important to think without our gadgets (小器具)," Pennycook told The Washington Post."There might be a lot of benefits of using our smartphones, but we still have to think in analytical ways to make sure we are correct."
9.What’s the main idea of the first two paragraphs?
A.How to get to the nearest cinema? B.Who starred in a TV series?
C.How to use smartphones? D.The convenience of smartphones.
10.The underlined word "access" in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to" ".
A.accept B.obtain C.compare D.remember
11.Which adjective best describes Gordon Pennycook’s attitude towards smartphones?
A.Critical. B.Cautious. C.Optimistic. D.Disappointed.
9.D
10.B
11.B
根据"the fastest way to a nearby cinema, how many centimeters equal an inch, or the name of the actor who starred in a TV series, etc."

"Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy — they’re given after all. Choices can be hard."
—Jeff Bezos
I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2, 300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I’d been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn’t work since most start-ups don’t, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage inventor. I’d always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.
I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people, and I had a brilliant boss that I admired very much. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took a long walk with me in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, "That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone that didn’t already have a good job." That logic made some sense to me, and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. It really was a difficult choice, but ultimately(最后), I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by the decision not to try at all.
After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choices.
12.What inspired the author with the idea of building an online bookstore?
A.His dream of being an inventor.
B.The support of his wife.
C.The greatly increasing usage of the Internet.
D.Millions of exciting titles.
13.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?
A.The idea of not trying would keep coming to his mind and disturb him.
B.He would be very excited if he tried it out.
C.He would be always having a doubt if he didn’t try.
D.The decision not to try the online bookstore would terrify him.
14.We can know from the passage that .
A.the boss thought the idea was suitable for the author
B.the author wanted someone else to try the idea
C.the author might not regret if he failed the idea
D.the author might go back to his boss if he failed
15.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Cleverness and Kindness B.The Starting of Amazon
C.Following My Passion D.We Are What We Choose
12.C
13.A
14.C
15.D
I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2, 300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me."
I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing."

Invention of the Paper Bag Machine
For many women inventors in years past, the invention process was twice as difficult. In addition to the suffering of inventing, they also faced the doubt of a world that didn’t believe women could create something of value. 16 ?
Born in 1838, Margaret Knight showed interest in inventing from a very young age. After observing an accident at a factory at the age of 12, Margaret started to produce her first real invention. 17 By the time she was a teenager the invention was being used in the factories.
18 While working in the factory, Knight thought how much easier it would be to pack items in paper bags if the bottoms were flat. That idea inspired Margaret to invent the machine that would change her into a famous inventor. Knight’s machine made the flat-bottom paper bags that are still used to this day in most grocery stores.
19 Not one to give in without a fight, Margaret took Annan to court to fight for the patent that belonged to her. While Annan argued simply that a woman could never design such a machine, Knight showed evidence that the invention indeed belonged to her. 20 ?
A.As a result, Margaret Knight received her patent.
B.Margaret didn’t stop there though throughout her life.
C.Later, Margaret went to work in a paper bag factory.
D.They were willing to fight for the recognition they deserved.
E.However, a man named Charles Annan tried to steal Knight’s idea.

Love Creates Wonders
"I stand up at last." This is what the two-legged dog shouts out when it manages to stand and walk.
What a moving story! Born disabled, the rejected dog was in despair. Fortunately, it was adopted by a kind lady who persisted in cheering it up. For days and nights, she trained the disabled creature in the backyard. Now it stands up and walks. Thinking of the failure and frustrations they went through, it can’t help exclaiming in gratitude. There is no doubt that it is the lady’s selfless love and continuous help that change the dog.
Indeed, love is powerful, which not only makes us strong enough to overcome any difficulty but also brings comfort to those suffering from loss and death and takes away hurt from disease and injuries. Where there is love, there are miracles. It’s everyone’s duty to make the world better. Please don’t hesitate to give love to those in need.
